Alaska Pacific University: Expedition Alaska Gear Overview
Good news! Alaska Pacific University will provide all the group gear for the river trip: tents, boats, and so on. We will also outfit each of you with rubber boots, rain gear, warm overclothes, and a sleeping bag.
You will need to provide the rest, but please note: if you do not already own these, you will want them anyway to be comfortable through the Alaskan winter. And, there will be ‘shopping’ opportunities once you are in Anchorage before we set out for the Yukon River. By having good gear appropriate for the activity and conditions, you will be able to take care of yourself and others and enjoy and learn fully.
Some principles:
A. Get the basics, you will use them often at APU. This includes base layers, footwear, hats/gloves, shells, and some “miscellaneous.”
B. Look for durable, lightweight gear good in cold, damp, environments. Do not bring cotton or cotton blend clothes.
C. Shop around. Discount/outlet stores – and second-hand stores in Anchorage - can have heavily discounted items.
D. When in doubt, email the instructors or wait until you arrive at APU.

Jet Ski to Glaciers & Helicopter in Chugach Mountains
Episode 16 takes us to Whittier Alaska where we explore the towns living arrangements in the Begich Towers then go Jet Skiing to Glaciers in Blackstone Bay.
Whittier is only accessible by air, water, or the one way tunnel that shares traffic with a train. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (aka the Whittier Tunnel) is a rough rock tunnel that is the only ground access to the city and until the early 2000's this tunnel was for trains only. Each end of the tunnel has long waiting areas where traffic lines up, and if no trains come street vehicles are allowed through the tunnel each half hour after the tunnel has cleared from opposing traffic.
We then head over to Anchorage first with a stop in Turnagain Arm to watch the Alaska bore tide surfers. In Anchorage a friend took us for a ride in a Robinson R44 helicopter into Alaska's Chugach Mountains all the way up to Lake George. Bob Kaufman spoke with us about life in Alaska before we head further north and get our first, but not last glimpse of the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights in Alaska.

Expedition Alaska: Race Day 1
The Expedition Alaska Adventure Race is underway! Join the Production Master Class at the University of Cincinnati for video updates from this 390 mile, 7 day, non-stop race. Twenty teams comprised of the world’s best endurance athletes began this epic and arduous odyssey on June 28 at Eklutna Lake, 40 miles northeast of Anchorage.
Day One included a dangerous crossing of the roaring, glacier fed Eklutna river and an arduous 3-mile climb through the Eklutna glacial moraine, climbing approximately 2000 feet. For the next six days, teams will navigate by map and compass through the stunning scenery of the world’s most remote and beautiful terrain in Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula.
The Production Master Class at the University of Cincinnati is both an academic course and experiential learning initiative, that connects an interdisciplinary group of students and faculty at the University of Cincinnati with internationally recognized television and film professionals to produce documentaries that reach a national audience.
This year’s production team is comprised of seven UC students from academic programs, at CCM, DAAP and A&S. The students are working in Alaska with two UC Professors and an international cadre of media professionals that includes four UC alumni.

On VICE’s weed travel show ‘BLUNT REVIEWS,’ we trek to places where weed is legal to review things a cannabis-consuming tourist can do while they’re stoned.
On this episode, VICE's Trey Smith visited Alaska, where he stayed at Cecelia's B&B, a weed-friendly bed and breakfast in Anchorage, and sampled a THC-infused buffet with folks from the local weed industry. Then he stopped by The High Expedition in Talkeetna, a dispensary that doubles as a museum to famous mountain climber Ray Genet, sampling their product before taking a bush plane to check out the surrounding mountain scenery.

We had the chance to take a short ride on a floatplane--another tick on the bucket list--and gained a little perspective (albeit as tourists) on Alaskan bush pilots, who rely upon their planes for survival, whether they're outfitted with wheels, snow skis, or floats. We saw Anchorage from above, gorged ourselves on the views of remote areas of the Chugach mountains, spotting moose and Dall sheep, and appreciated a bird's eye view of low tide and Fire Island and Cook Inlet.

I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, which means my non-Alaska-born peers often find this fascinating. (Understandable. It's a pretty dope state.) Caitlin, who's been my close friend since college, once humorously noted how she has heard people ask me this question dozens and dozens of times: What's it like to live in ALASKA??
So while visiting my homeland of Fairbanks, Alaska last year, my friend Caitlin Cowie and my sister Julie Barsi and I decided to make this video. We thought it'd be a fun way to share both the epic and quirky things we love about the last frontier. We went to all our favorite hometown spots and even trekked to the nearest hot springs and, of course, to Denali National Park.
Keep in mind, this video only touches the tip of the iceberg of the awesomeness that is Alaska, but it's a start. Hope you enjoy!

Winter Hiking in Alaska | How We Almost Died
Winter Hiking in Alaska / Eagle River Nature Center and Thunderbird Falls
EAGLE RIVER NATURE CENTER
After waking up ready to explore another day in Alaska in the winter, we opted to drive about 45 minutes East of Anchorage towards Chugach State Park to visit the Eagle River Nature Center and hike on one of the trails.
When we arrived at the Eagle River Nature Center, they were having a special Saturday event – complete with pancakes, hot chocolate, and a family folk band performance planned for that evening. We basically picked the perfect day.
THUNDERBIRD FALLS
On the surface, this seemed like an easy winter hike in Alaska – 1.8 miles in and out hike to a viewing platform for a frozen waterfall. Sure, let’s do it! We had ice grippers on our shoes and winter layers on so what could go wrong?

Beautiful Alaskan Beach - [Living in Alaska 105]
Alaska isn't known for it's beaches but this one should definitely be noted. It's a beach located just down the hill from Kincaid Park but be careful if you ever decide to go! If it's not icy, it's probably really muddy and the tide can be deadly.

1. The first European vessel to reach Alaska is generally held to be the St. Gabriel under the authority of the surveyor M. S. Gvozdev and assistant navigator I. Fyodorov on August 21, 1732, during an expedition of Siberian cossak A. F. Shestakov and Belorussian explorer Dmitry Pavlutsky (1729–1735).
2. The name Alaska (Russian: Аляска, tr. Alyaska) was introduced in the Russian colonial period when it was used to refer to the peninsula. It was derived from an Aleut, or Unangam idiom, which figuratively refers to the mainland of Alaska. Literally, it means object to which the action of the sea is directed.
3. The Russians never fully colonized Alaska, and the colony was never very profitable. Evidence of Russian settlement in names and churches survive throughout southeast Alaska. William H. Seward, the United States Secretary of State, negotiated the Alaska Purchase. In 1867 United States Secretary of State William H. Seward offered Russia $7,200,000, or two cents per acre, for Alaska.
4. In 1942 Japan invaded the Aleutian Islands, which started the One Thousand Mile War, the first battle fought on American soil since the Civil War. During World War II, the Aleutian Islands Campaign focused on the three outer Aleutian Islands that were invaded by Japanese troops and occupied between June 1942 and August 1943. During the occupation, one Alaskan civilian was killed by Japanese troops and nearly fifty were interned in Japan, where about half of them died.
5. Alaska is the United States’ largest state and is over twice the size of Texas. Measuring from north to south the state is approximately 2250 km long and measuring from east to west it is 4350 km wide. Alaska is a geographical marvel. When a scale map of Alaska is superimposed on a map of the 48 lower states, Alaska extends from coast to coast. Nearly one-third of Alaska lies within the Arctic Circle.
6. The City and Borough of Juneau is the capital city of Alaska. It is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan panhandle, and it is the second largest city in the United States by area. Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of what was then the District of Alaska was moved from Sitka. It needs to be said that Anchorage is the largest city, nearly 10 times larger than Juneau.
7. Alaska has some of the greatest landscapes on Earth. It is covered by forests, mountains, 3 million lakes, volcanoes, and about half of all the glaciers in the world. Its wildlife is abundant: brown bears, black bears, polar bears, bisons, moose, whales, bald eagles and many more species all inhabit the area.

Frontiers 170: Hope for Alaska's Economy
We tend to think of oil, fish and government as the drivers of Alaska’s economy, yet they are not necessarily the engines of economic growth.
The University of Alaska Anchorage’s Center for Economic Development has found that almost 90 percent of the new jobs in our state are created by businesses that are five years or younger.
Innovation also plays a big role -- whether the company is one of the traditional economic mainstays, or a new player in Alaska’s business landscape.
This week on Frontiers we look at what stimulates job growth. Here are some of the highlights.
• Good vibrations: KTVA’s Dave Goldman takes us to Prudhoe Bay and the hunt for new oil. BP is using trucks that send sonic vibrations to the ground that help pinpoint new pockets of oil.
• Kvichak Fish Company: Two sisters from Montana team up with Bristol Bay fisherman to market salmon.
• Triverus: Alaska doesn’t have many manufacturing companies, but there’s one in Palmer that does big business with the Navy.
• Tap water and toilets: While most Americans take water and sewer service for granted, it’s a big innovation for the Southwest Alaska community of Eek.
• Noland Klouda is our featured guest. As director of UAA’s Center for Economic Development, he’s one of the Johnny Appleseed’s of start up businesses, planting seeds of opportunity in our economic landscape.
Although the state appears to have turned the corner on the recession, all is not bright in the Alaskan economy. In the face of some of the big state budget cuts the governor has proposed, its recovery is still fragile.
If the state sheds a lot of jobs this year, more will be needed in the private sector to offset those loses – so it’s a good time to a look what makes our economy tick.
