???????????????????????????? Scotland the Brave? l Al Jazeera Correspondent
As a Scot from birth, Julie MacDonald was taught two important lessons, one is how to master the art of being the underdog and the other is how to dislike the English.
And since her childhood, she has been fascinated as to why being Scottish feels like being a different species to the English and why they care so much about keeping their identity separate. Fascination has now turned to worry; as Scots are being called upon to decide not just the future of their own great nation but that of the UK too.
In 2014, the people of Scotland will be asked whether they want to become an independent sovereign state. It is not often that a 300-year-old union is broken, so the vote will have ramifications far beyond a land of five million people. Scottish independence could lead to a break-up of the UK.
So, will they vote with their heads or will their tartan hearts take over and plunge them into the potential uncertainty of a national divorce?
It is a stormy marriage that has survived 305 years of countless disagreements, bloody squabbles, and cross-border contempt. And like two ageing spouses, England and Scotland tolerate one another, aware of their national differences as well as the reality that they are perhaps ultimately better together.
But not according to Scotland’s ruling party - the Scottish Nationalists - who after a long campaign have made it possible for Scots to take control of their country.
Taking a trip across her homeland, Julie explores the ‘dream’ of an independent Scotland, talking to the main players like Scottish premier Alex Salmond, who champions an independent Scotland, and those who oppose him. She gets to the heart of the arguments for and against and how the future might look if the Scots take the plunge and Scotland stands on its own two feet. And she talks to Scotland’s most famous artists and comedians about what it means to be Scottish.

The Green Team is a natural resource conservation group based in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland consisting entirely of volunteers who give up their time, volunteering for the conservation and sustainability of our wild places in and around the Lothians which includes the areas around Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian. The groups main body of volunteering is by young people, aged 14-25 who come along on various day and weekend projects going green green to save the environment through volunteer work who learn about the natural heritage, environmental issues as well as the importance of protecting our environment and recycling. Since 1995, a total of over 1700 young people have worked with the Green Team within the United Kingdom improving their local area with one of the conservation organizations inviting conservation for kids where young people to carry out a community service for their area. There are also offers of conservation jobs and conservation careers with the Green Team.
The Green Team wildlife conservation work projects are highly practical, full of fun and teamwork, conservation efforts aiming to teach environment protection; don't believe me then keep reading on.
The environmental protection projects typically include activities such as nature walks, bird watching, learning to use tools in safety and using natural resources to create artwork, learning how to live green. Joining the Green Team gives you the chance to gain some experience working with a conservation and environment organization meeting new people and above all to have fun. Each day costs £10 per person which also includes mini bus transport a a mug of hot chocolate and even some roasted marshmallows for the green conservative.
In addition to the day projects, the Green Team also run green conservation weekend residential projects where volunteers stay in a hostel or temporary accommodation for the evening.
If you are are a UK environmental conservationist, you can also get involved with the Green Team as part of your Duke of Edinburgh Award Service Section by volunteering to come along to a number of Green Team projects and also as part of your John Muir Award. Here's how you can achieve your awards:
Gold -- 10 days over 10 months
Silver -- Six days over 6 months
Bronze -- 4 days over 3 months
I produced this video for the Green Team in 2009 as part of my HND in Film and Television production where I thought of many of the conservation groups who might be interested in having a promotional video for their website. I had joined the Green Team myself in 2006 so had many prior experiences of volunteering with the team on their weekend and day projects. I really enjoyed making this video as I had more creative control over the look of the final piece and because of it's topic in the outdoors which is a passion of my own.
I entered the film into the annual Edinburgh Cine and Video Society competition and won some awards for Best Overall Film with the Lizar's Trophy, Best use of Editing with the Reg Carden Scissors and also the Bill Walker Trophy for best use of sound. It's also been shortlisted in the Source magazine, a young people's magazine short film competition with the finalists announced at the Glasgow Film Theatre in October, 2010.

Oceanic - Secrets of World Climate, Episode 7
Cool oceans. Westerly winds. Mild winters. Mild summers. Overcast skies and rain year round. It might not seem the picture of an ideal place to live, but these lands harbour many world famous European cities, spawned not one but three global empires, and have influenced agriculture around the world more than any other. These are the lands of the Marine West Coast, the lands of the Oceanic climate.
The seventh episode in a series exploring all the major climate zones of the world, in this geography documentary we show this part of the world in its full beauty, and uncover the secrets of why it is that way and show you the influential lands and cities that lie within.
Found on the western margins of four continents, this climate's home is North-West Europe, where it covers the British Isles (Ireland, Scotland Wales and England), most of France, northern Spain, parts of Switzerland, all of Belgium and The Netherlands (Holland), most of Germany, much of Denmark and the western coasts of Norway and Iceland.
In North America, west coast of Canada comes under its influence including the regional capital of Vancouver. In South America, the southern third of Chile is covered.
Lastly, in the far off lands of Oceania, the south eastern part of Australia, including most of Victoria and all of Tasmania is covered by the Oceanic climate, including the state capitals of Melbourne and Hobart. Both islands of New Zealand are dominated by this climate, including the capital Wellington and largest city Auckland.
ERRATUM: The precipitation graph for Auckland should have an annual total of 1200mm (the individual monthly bars are correct, however)

50 Things to do in London Travel Guide | Top Attractions London City Guide Transcript:
So Hello from London! Time for a new destination. This is a city that I haven't visited in almost 4 years. So we're both very excited to be in London. And we're going to be making a little video guide. Actually a really big video guide because we plan on showing you 50 different things to do around London.
Our first stop was Trafalgar Square. This square leads to a lot of central attractions, so it's a nice place to people watch, get your bearings, and plan out where you want to go in the city.
The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. It offers a bird's eye view of the city.
Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence for Britain's sovereigns since 1837. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every year.
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Palace along with Big Ben are two of the top London attractions that dot the city-scape.
The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the River Thames.
And that's a wrap for London! Like with any mega city, it's impossible to cover all the sights and attractions you can enjoy here, but hopefully this video will give you an idea of what London has to offer.
This is part of our Travel in England series showcasing English culture, English foods, English cuisine and English people.

You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Car / Clock / Name
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.
