SRI LANKAN EXPO-RAIL (Luxury Train Service)
► ►
The Sri Lankan government together with the private sector has fulfilled the long felt need of railway passengers with the introduction of luxury class services to the Colombo Kandy rail transportation. The two luxury train services, Expo Rail and Rajadhani Express launched yesterday are facilitated by the government and operated by the Sri Lanka railways. However the luxury coaches are serviced and marketed by the private sector.
The launch of the public private sector participatory project was officiated under the patronage of Transport Minister Kumar Welgama and Deputy Minister Rohana Dissanayake. First to take off was Expo Rail operated by Expolanka Holdings at 7:20 a.m. from Fort Railway station and the Blue Line Company's Rajadhani Express departed at 3:15 p.m. in the evening.
The new luxury train service will be most beneficial to locals and foreigners who seek to travel in comfort and enjoy the scenic view en route. The Railway Department hopes to increase its revenue through the operation of these luxury trains and the newly generated income is to be utilized for the development of railway services.
The luxury coaches attached to the trains are fully air-conditioned, carpeted, have first class toilet facilities, free Wi-Fi, side racks to store passenger luggage, on board snacks, tea/coffee and are serviced by stewards. An Expo Rail all-inclusive return ticket costs Rs. 1,200 per passenger, whilst the return ticket per passenger for Rajadhani Express is priced at Rs. 850 exclusive of snacks.

Today's train from Kandy to Ella was a MUST on our Sri Lanka bucket list. We initially thought we would do as many tourists have a peak our head out of the train's doors but something we NEVER expected happened. We got invited to enjoy the rest of the train ride from the CONDUCTOR'S CAB!
Thank you to the captains for allowing us to see the train from a different perspective and being so friendly to us, thank you to the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau for making this happen! Thanks for watching and we hoped you enjoy our train review!

Pulathisi Express Train Ride | Train Ride Sri Lanka | Travel Vlogs | Sri Lanka 2019
Pulathisi Express is one of the most recent trains added to the SL railway network running from Colombo to Polonnaruwa vice versa. Although the train ride from Kandy to Elle is widely regarded as the most beautiful train ride, its worth checking out this ride too, as it goes through numerous natural forest reserves from Maho/Kekirawa to Polonnaruwa, specially when it passes Habarana forest. You have a good chance to see wild elephants nearby the rail track, as they are frequently crossing the railway.
This is a comfortable train ride with good seating and adequate space, not very crowded, and probably the easiest way to reach North Central region from Colombo. Enjoy!

Exporail train Trip to Kandy, Sri Lanka 2016 by Udesh Perera
I have travelled from Colombo Fort to Kandy on Exporail. It was a pleasant journey until a person wearing Blue/black coat appeared. He was some what abusive to Exporail staff and demanded that doors kept opened. This would interfere with luxury level as the air conditioning system may not work appropriately and may cause noise pollution. If they allow private companies to maintain and operate luxury cabins in government trains, it is their responsibility to allow those companies to work uninterrupted. Since passengers pay huge sum of money to travel in these cabins, disruption to their luxury may make these companies vulnerable!
Hope this is not happening now!
Sense of Heritage -- Colombo to Kandy by Train
The 'Sense of Heritage' is all about iconic train, legendary railway line and World Heritage City. Sri Lanka Railway or Ceylon Railway made its first journey to Kandy in 1867, making a way for the planters to transport their coffee production to Colombo, 25 years after it was originally discussed in 1842. Today, you can travel along the same rail line to Kandy, the way your great grand parents did. The Viceroy Special vintage train adds glamour to the historic journey to the hill capital of Sri Lanka.
Combining Edwardian splendor with modern luxury, this authentic train has captured the imagination of many train enthusiasts and fans. It threads its way through majestic scenery and engineering marvel along its way to Kandy. Luxury seating and dining at your table ensures that you won't miss a single minute of the spectacular views.
The journey begins from the Fort Railway Station, a symbol of colonial architecture and reaches Maradana Hub Station, passing Beira Lake; followed by beautiful Hindu Kovil (place of worship). The train then crosses the 800 ft long main bridge over the Kelani River beyond the Dematagoda station to move out of Colombo. The train travels besides slums of city suburbs prior to reach Ragama, (9 miles away from Colombo) the first railway junction on the track where the northern and main railway lines meets.
Giving way to crowded residential areas, the train enters into the stretch of about 30 km of the greenery of paddy and coconut cultivations amidst sleepy villages and small towns. The change of environment is evident with the presence of mid range hills closer to Mirigama station, followed by the first tunnel on the Main Line, which is 274 ft. long, before reaching Ambepussa station, 54 km from Colombo. This was the terminus of the first train destination in 1864. The old station is still visible by the side.
The train continues its journey through moderate gradients, crossing the bridge over Maa Oya River and runs along the river bank before arriving at Polgahawela, the second railway junction that joins the northern railway line. The next main railway station is Rambukkana, 52 miles away from Colombo is significant for two reasons. Firstly, the train enters the hill country through a major climb which raises the railway line from 313 ft to a height of 1698 ft to reach Kadugannawa involving 13 miles. Secondly, this serves as the transit point to visit 'Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage' which has the largest number of elephants in captivity.

FIRST CLASS TRAIN EXPERIENCE (Galle to Colombo) | Sri Lanka Travel
First class train travel perhaps means something different in Sri Lanka!
We decided to treat ourselves to a first-class journey from Galle to Colombo since we’d only gone unreserved previously. We were in the observation car which you’ll always travel in if you book first class on most Sri Lankan trains, it is designed with a huge window on the front or back of the carriage (depending on perspective) so we were super excited to soak up the beautiful coastal views of our journey. Unfortunately, as beautiful as the scenery was, first class didn’t quite live up to our expectations...

P.S. this video was filmed prior to the recent (April 2019) terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this horrific event.
