During their nearly 2000 mile1841 journey overland from Adelaide to Albany, 26 year old Edward John Eyre and his party - companion John Baxter and three Aboriginal men - found fresh water two metres beneath a coastal sand dune, and camped there for a month, recovering from severe dehydration and exhaustion. This spot became known as Eyre's Sand Patch.
When the Inter-Colonial Telegraph Line reached the Patch in 1877, a weatherboard and corrugated iron building was erected to house a permanently-manned repeater station, and the spot was known as the Eyre Telegraph Station.
20 years later, in 1897, the station moved into a new limestone and corrugated iron building nearby until, in 1927 when the telegraph line moved 150 kilometres north to follow the Trans Australian Railway, the building was abandoned.
Fifty years later, in 1977, the limestone building was restored by volunteers with the support of the Post Office Historical Society and Birds Australia, using materials supplied by the WA Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and it now functions as a permanent bird observatory.
Honeyeaters who spend the summer in the deep south-west extend their range north and east in the winter to feast on the flowering mallee and, at Eyre, honeyeaters, silvereyes and other species are found wintering in the narrow coastal mallee strip. A colony of breeding penguins spends the summer west of Eyre at Twilight Cove. By 2008, 245 bird species had been recorded in the surrounding nature reserve.

16th July 2013 Twilight Cove to the Eyre Bird Sanctuary
A full day round trip from our camp just out of Cocklebiddy to Twilight Cove on the South Coast and along the coast to the Eyre Bird Observatory and back again. Beautiful squeaky beach sand along a fabulous section of coastline called Kanidal Beach.
Unfortunately the caretakers of the Eyre Bird Observatory were not very friendly to let us look around as we arrived about 20 minutes late of the 4pm closing time. Its not like they were busy, we were the only visitors there that day (and probably that week) as we could see from the lack of fresh tracks on the road and you definitely need a 4WD to get there. You would think they would be happy to see tourist visitors, obviously they had important business to attend to that did not include tourists.
Another great night ensued back at camp around the fire, Will gave us another demo with the fire sticks, and Hayley balanced empty bottles.

Cocklebiddy Cave WA
Cocklebiddy Cave WA is now just a another place closed because of stupid people, each day their are more stupid people stuffing it up for all of us. It will only be a matter of time and we well be locked out of every where and every thing! There will be no point in 4x4ing across Australia to look see a lock gates every where we go.

Turning off the Nullarbor highway we began our trip North to Rawlinna from Cocklebiddy and through the Arubiddy and Rawlinna stations.

About 20 minutes of the track off the beach back to Cocklebiddy W.A. Two vehicles had travelled the track the day before but little evidence of anyone else at all. Taken on April 19 2019.
2 40km to Rawlinna
With only 40 kilometres to go to Rawlinna on the track up from Cocklebiddy, we were looking forward to getting there.

Murra El Elevyn Cave Nullabor Cocklebiddy
Murra El Elevyn Cave is in the Nullabor region in Nuytsland Nature Reserve, approximately 6km West of Cocklebiddy roadhouse. It is a beautiful dive site with a number of air chambers, along with fossilised sea shells, urchins and more. Suited to various diving methodologies with some beautiful narrow passages and flatteners suited for side mounting. A rewarding site. Also a breeding ground for a particular Bat species.

Border Run 2012 - BMW's Doin' It Hard In Oz
BMW Riders travel from Perth in Western Australia to the Border with South Australia to attend the 35th anniversary of the 'Border Run'. The difference is that these guys get there and back by using some of the isolated and rarely used roads and tracks in Outback Australia

The Nullarbor Plain ( NUL-ər-bor; Latin: nullus, no, and arbor, tree) is part of the area of flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid country of southern Australia, located on the Great Australian Bight coast with the Great Victoria Desert to its north. It is the world's largest single exposure of limestone bedrock, and occupies an area of about 200,000 square kilometres (77,000 sq mi). At its widest point, it stretches about 1,100 kilometres (684 mi) from east to west across the border between South Australia and Western Australia.
