Aggression and empathy -- a destructive mix | Jerzy Vetulani | TEDxKrakow
Jerzy Vetulani is a Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, professor at the J. Dietla MWSZ in Kraków and, after hours, at the Institute of Pharmacology at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is a neuropsychopharmacologist with a specific interest in antidepressant and pro-cognitive medication as well as anti-addiction and is also a popular blogger. He will talk about the common neurobiological roots of empathy and aggression, and how the close relationship between these two supposedly different emotions can lead us to destructive behaviour and misguided decisions.
Jerzy Vetulani spoke at TEDxKraków, an independently organised TED event which took place on 20 October 2011 at the Manggha Centre for Japanese Art and Technology in Kraków, Poland. Our theme was The New Normal and we asked our speakers to tell us about what we might just have to get used to once the dust settles from the various ongoing geopolitical, financial and environmental crises.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).

Timothy Snyder ─ Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning
Skip ahead to main speaker at 2:47
Timothy Snyder is the Bird White Housum Professor of History at Yale University, specializing in the history of central and eastern Europe. He will discuss his recent bestselling book Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning.
In this epic history of extermination and survival, Timothy Snyder presents a new explanation of the great atrocity of the twentieth century, and reveals the risks that we face in the twenty-first. Based on new sources from eastern Europe and forgotten testimonies from Jewish survivors, Black Earth recounts the mass murder of the Jews as an event that is still close to us, more comprehensible than we would like to think, and thus all the more terrifying.
The Holocaust began in a dark but accessible place, in Hitler’s mind, with the thought that the elimination of Jews would restore balance to the planet and allow Germans to win the resources they desperately needed. Such a worldview could be realized only if Germany destroyed other states, so Hitler’s aim was a colonial war in Europe itself. In the zones of statelessness, almost all Jews died. A few people, the righteous few, aided them, without support from institutions. Much of the new research in this book is devoted to understanding these extraordinary individuals. The almost insurmountable difficulties they faced only confirm the dangers of state destruction and ecological panic. These men and women should be emulated, but in similar circumstances few of us would do so.
By overlooking the lessons of the Holocaust, Snyder concludes, we have misunderstood modernity and endangered the future. The early twenty-first century is coming to resemble the early twentieth, as growing preoccupations with food and water accompany ideological challenges to global order. Our world is closer to Hitler’s than we like to admit, and saving it requires us to see the Holocaust as it was — and ourselves as we are. Groundbreaking, authoritative, and utterly absorbing, Black Earth reveals a Holocaust that is not only history but warning.

MUDr.

SUMMARY
=======
The history of the Jews in Poland dates back over 1,000 years. For centuries, Poland was home to the largest and most significant Jewish community in the world. Poland was a principal center of Jewish culture, thanks to a long period of statutory religious tolerance and social autonomy. This ended with the Partitions of Poland which began in 1772, in particular, with the discrimination and persecution of Jews in the Russian Empire. During World War II there was a nearly complete genocidal destruction of the Polish Jewish community by Nazi Germany and its collaborators, during the 1939–1945 German occupation of Poland and the ensuing Holocaust. Since the fall of communism in Poland, there has been a Jewish revival, featuring an annual Jewish Culture Festival, new study programs at Polish secondary schools and universities, the work of synagogues such as the Nożyk Synagogue, and Warsaw's Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
From the founding of the Kingdom of Poland in 1025 through to the early years of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth created in 1569, Poland was the most tolerant country in Europe. Known as paradisus iudaeorum (Latin for Paradise of the Jews), it became a shelter for persecuted and expelled European Jewish communities and the home to the world's largest Jewish community of the time. According to some sources, about three-quarters of the world's Jews lived in Poland by the middle of the 16th century. With the weakening of the Commonwealth and growing religious strife (due to the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation), Poland's traditional tolerance began to wane from the 17th century onward. After the Partitions of Poland in 1795 and the destruction of Poland as a sovereign state, Polish Jews were subject to the laws of the partitioning powers, the increasingly antisemitic Russian Empire, as well as Austria-Hungary and Kingdom of Prussia (later a part of the German Empire). Still, as Poland regained independence in the aftermath of World War I, it was the center of the European Jewish world with one of the world's largest Jewish communities of over 3 million. Antisemitism was a growing problem throughout Europe in those years, from both the political establishment and the general population. At the start of World War II, Poland was partitioned between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union (see Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact). One-fifth of the Polish population perished during World War II, half of them were 3,000,000 Polish Jews murdered in The Holocaust, constituting 90% of Polish Jewry. Although the Holocaust occurred largely in German-occupied Poland, there was little collaboration with the Nazis by its citizens. Collaboration by individual Poles has been described as smaller than in other occupied countries. Statistics of the Israeli War Crimes Commission indicate that less than 0.1% of Poles collaborated with the Nazis. Examples of Polish attitudes to German atrocities varied widely, from actively risking death in order to save Jewish lives, and passive refusal to inform on them; to indifference, blackmail, and in extreme cases, participation in pogroms such as the Jedwabne pogrom. Grouped by nationality, Poles represent the largest number of people who rescued Jews during the Holocaust.
In the post-war period, many of the approximately 200,000 Jewish survivors registered at Central Committee of Polish Jews or CKŻP (of whom 136,000 arrived from the Soviet Union) left the People's Republic of Poland for the nascent State of Israel and North or South America. Their departure was hastened by the destruction of Jewish institutions, post-war violence and the hostility of the Communist Party to both religion and private enterprise, but also because in 1946–1947 Poland was the only Eastern Bloc country to allow free Jewish aliyah to Israel, without visas or exit permits. Britain demanded Poland to halt the exodus, but their pressure was largely unsuccessful. Most o ...

Vitiligo induced by drugs: a meta-analysis of reported cases
K. Curzytek, J. Pietowska, R. Spiewak
Institute of Dermatology, Celimun Biomedical Research, Krakow, Poland
Source: Curzytek K, Pietowska J, Spiewak R. Vitiligo induced by drugs: a meta-analysis of reported cases. Abstract 1280. Allergy 2007; 62 (Suppl 83: XXVI Congress of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology): 447.
Background: Reports on drug-induced vitiligo are scarce and scattered throughout medical literature.
Aim: To consolidate available information about this disorder.
Methods: We searched for articles about drug-induced vitiligo using PubMed and carried out a meta analysis of the articles found. We extracted information about the kind of drug that caused vitiligo and possible pathomechanism of the disease. The collected data were pooled for further analyses.
Results: Altogether, we identified 21 published cases of drug-induced vitiligo. They were induced by the following medicines: 1.anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, valproic acid, clonazepam, phenytoin), 2.antimalarial drugs (chloroquine, quinine), 3.biological drugs (interleukin-2, interleukin-4, interferon α, infliximab), 4.drugs for Parkinson's disease (tolcapone, levodopa), 5.external drugs for alopecia (diphencyprone, squaric acid dibutylester), 6.other drugs (fluphenazine, clofazimine, dopamine, hydroquinone monobenzylether ester, ganciclovir, beta-blockers, lispro insulin). Pathomechanisms of drug-induced vitiligo suggested in the reported cases can be classified into 3 groups: 1.drug-induced activation of cytotoxic T cells directed against melanocyte antigens (MART-1/MelanA, gp100, TRP-1, TRP-2), 2.drug-induced damage to sympathetic nerves that are connected by chemical synapses to melanocytes, which indirectly leads to their functional disturbances, 3.direct, cytotoxic effects of drugs on melanocytes (apoptosis). Most of suggested mechanisms of drug-induced vitiligo are speculative in their nature - there is need for systematic research in this field.
Conclusions: Drug-induced vitiligo can be provoked by drugs from different chemical and pharmacological classes. Hypotheses about its pathogenesis include autoimmune, neural or cytotoxic effects on melanocytes.
