Festival of Native Arts Fairbanks Alaska
Art is alive in Fairbanks, Alaska midwinter when the town is rocked by temperatures to minus double digits and by an influx of village dance groups come to encourage their own who have been studying at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. It is the Festival of Native Arts.
It began in 1973 and was one of the first festivals of its kind in Alaska as it brought together Native people from all over the state of various backgrounds, traditions, languages and geographies.
The second semester of studies at UAF means darker days, more cold and for many, longer days away from their families and lifestyles of rural Alaska. Dance groups converge from all regions sharing their songs, old and new.
UAF and Fairbanks is treated to a showing of intertribal unity. The festival is three days of song, dance, stories, and an excellent array of the state's Native artisans at the arts and crafts foyer.
There are also special theater performances, and an art show by students of the Native Art Dept.
In days past, the festival was organized by students and staff. Today, the festival is organized soley by the Native student body. In these and other ways the festival helps to keep cultural ties strong on campus- is an opportunity to catch up with old friends and extended family members, and shows how villages encourage the students first hand by using the cultural arts.
The physical home of the festival, UAF campus hill, was anciently a gathering place of the Athabascan tribes. Before the university was established Athabascan people would come together there to gather wild potatoes, to discuss plans, learn from eachother, and get a perspective that can only come from gathering all together. This is why its known as Troth Yeddha' --Wild Potatoe Slope.
Traditional Chief Peter John said that when the university approached the Athabascan people about aqcuireing that site, and explained the purpose of a university the elders said it sounded like a similar use as it had in the past- working together, learning from eachother, planning for the future-and okayed the use of that hill for the university.
The festival of Native Arts is a touchstone of the spirit of Troth Yeddha', and encourages through the arts the future leaders, in all fields, of Alaska's Native people.

Anchorage, Alaska Trip Part 1
When my friend Amanda said she wanted to go to Alaska, for her birthday this year, and visit her high school friend, I immediately asked If I could tag along, I mean its ALASKA!!! The final frontier and land of the midnight sun, who wouldn't want to experience that. The only thing that I wished was that we would have gone during the northern lights, but that just gives me more of a reason to go back to this beautiful state.
We arrived at Anchorage, and soon after the following day, our host for this trip, Jessy, Justin and their three kids drove down from Fairbanks to meet us. I instantly fell in love with these kids, all different, strong but above all hilarious personalities. I knew Justin from high school, and had met Jessi before, so it wasn't like I was meeting for the first time.
We decided to stay two nights at an airbnb in Anchorage, and I fell in love with this city. It was such a whole different experience that I will never forget.
This episode we enjoy good food, and drive down to Seward Alaska, for a boat tour, and my goodness it was amazing, the Vessel was called Orca Song, here is the link if you want to book
Also thank you Jessi Lopez for that Orca footage, I think that really made the video.
We also checked out the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, in Chugach State Park, here is the link
There is plenty more to come, and the rest is is even more stunning beauty,
Thanks for watching
and don't forget to subscribe

Alaska 2015: Historic Heritage House B&B in Fairbanks
Great value. Clean, cozy, comfortable -- The Alaska Heritage House Bed and Breakfast is a charming place to stay and within walking distance to many interesting places in downtown Fairbanks. Van, Bill and their cute lil' doggy, Mable, make guests feel welcome and happy.
After a delicious breakfast in a family-style setting, complete with china on doilies and a house full of period piece antiques from the early 1900's, take a tour through the multi-level home, appreciate the ambiance, art, and decor; sit by the fireplace or one of the many windows and enjoy reading a garden book or Alaskan novel.
Take a five-minute walk and check out the Jade Boutique for vintage treasures, or a delicious lunch/dinner at Big Daddy's BBQ restaurant or the yummy Thai Noodle restaurant. Bobby's Downtown is an impressive Greek restaurant and bar. There are several karaoke bars.
It's a nice walk to the visitor center along the Chena River near the Marriott Hotel, and the new Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center near the Marriott.
There are plenty of antique and gift shops, a Co-op Plaza with lots of nice stores including the Two Street Gallery and a full menu Crepery. The Ice Museum is closed until May, and the Art House Gallery on Cushman & 10th near the bus station is well worth a visit.
And in the opposite direction down Cowles from the Heritage House is the 9th Ave. Hostel where the northern lights can sometimes be seen, a central bus station for trips to the Santa Claus House, North Pole, University of Alaska Museum of the North, etc. About a 15-minute walk further down Cowles is a full service camera store in the strip mall by the gym.
If you opt for a rental car in winter, try to book a vehicle with snow tires.
Enjoy! There's much to see and do :)
