Rocky Mountain National Park - Fall River Rd Timelapse
Old Fall River Road earned the distinction of being the first auto route in Rocky Mountain National Park offering access to the park's high country. In the minds of many park visitors, the relatively subtle old route remains foremost. Unlike Trail Ridge Road, which is well known for being the highest continuous paved road in the nation, the Old Fall River Road is a much more motor nature trail.
Primarily gravel, one-way uphill and punctuated by switchbacks, slower-paced, 11-mile-long. The old road quietly leads travelers from Horseshoe Park (a short distance west of the Fall River Entrance) through the park's wilderness to Fall River Pass, 11,796 feet above sea level. The journey to the alpine world at the top of Old Fall River Road is relaxing. The experience is one to be savored. The posted speed limit is 15 miles per hour, a clear indication that a journey up Old Fall River Road is not for the impatient. There are no guard rails along this road. The road itself is safe, but narrow and curved. In places, the trees of the montane and subalpine forests are so close that motorists can touch them. Old Fall River Road is ideal for visitors seeking to become intimate with nature. The road follows a route traveled long ago by Indian hunters, who came to the park area in search of its abundant game. Early in the trip, travelers pass the alluvial fan scoured out by the 1982 Lawn Lake Flood and the site of a labor camp that housed state convicts who worked on the road project. For these men, crime did not pay. The laborers were forced to build the three-mile stretch of road to the scenic respite of Chasm Falls with no more than hand tools at their disposal. After passing Willow Park, where elk often are seen feeding on the foliage, the road enters the alpine tundra. Awaiting there is the Fall River Cirque, birthplace of glaciers that once worked their way up and down the mountain valleys. The road traverses the headwall of this amphitheater-like formation before joining Trail Ridge Road near the Alpine Visitor Center at Fall River Pass. Ahead lie the wonders of Trail Ridge Road, which leads travelers east to Estes Park or southwest to Grand Lake. Behind is Old Fall River Road, that winding old route that offers travelers a taste of auto travel in days gone by and a look at Rocky Mountain's nature close-up. Old Fall River Road
Advisory Note: OLD FALL RIVER ROAD WILL BE CLOSED IN 2014.
Endovalley Road and Old Fall River Road are open to pedestrian traffic only. The Roaring River Bridge is washed out, so visitors must cross through the stream - caution is advised and the water is COLD! Bicycles and pets on leashes are not permitted past the barricade on the road.
The Old Fall River Road was the only road to Fall River Pass until Trail Ridge Road was built in the early 1930s. Today it is a one-way dirt road that runs between Endovalley and the Pass. It is narrow and has many switchbacks, but it is a beautiful and safe drive.

Cub Lake Hike , Rocky Mountain National Park, CO, USA
The Rocky Mountain National Park is located on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado, USA, close to the community of Estes Park. From Estes Park, the Rocky Mountain National Park Headquarters at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center is a 6km drive to the west on Route 36. From there, the junction to Bear Lake Road is a further 2 km along Route 36 on the left side, and after a 1 km drive along the scenic Bear Lake Road, a small spur road to the right leads to the Cub Lake Trailhead.
The Cub Lake Trailhead is at 2450 m. above sea level, and the 3.7km. hike to Cub Lake only requires a 165 m. increase in elevation. The first section of the trail is level as it crosses the western edge of the Moraine Park grasslands. The trail then climbs steadily through aspen and conifer woodlands, and eventually emerges at an area of tall wind-swept grasses. Beyond, surface water lily plants encircle the shallows of Cub Lake ---- the cobalt-blue center of the lake is plant-free. Interestingly, a clear narrow band of lake water bisects the encircling band of lily plants. Though this circular band looks as if a speedboat had cut it, it is in fact a natural phenomenon.
Beyond Cub Lake, a downhill trail eventually meets the Big Thompson River at The Pool junction. From there, a slightly downhill hiking trail parallels the river back to the Cub Lake Trailhead for a total loop hike of about 10 km. Along this return trail, the path crosses several large landslide areas, and passes through immense tumbled boulders in the Arch Rocks area.
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Trail Ridge Road - Alpine Visitor Center - Day 4 of 5
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Trail Ridge Road - Alpine Visitor Center - Day 4 of 5. Recorded on May 31st 2018. This video shows the The Trail Ridge Road leading up to the Alpine Visitor Center. We share some of the educational displays in the Visitor center. The Alpine Visitor Center is at elevation of 11,796 feet. Also shared some of the Trail Ridge Road Medicine Bow Curve leaving the Alpine Visitor Center.
“Rocky Mountain National Park's Alpine Visitor Center is located at 11,796 feet (3,595 m) above sea level at Fall River Pass, one mile west of the highest point on Trail Ridge Road and four miles east of the Continental Divide at Milner Pass in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is the highest visitor center in the National Park System.[1]
The Alpine Visitor Center includes restrooms, exhibits on the alpine tundra ecosystem, and a gift shop operated by the park's non-profit partner organization, the Rocky Mountain Conservancy. The visitor center opens around Memorial Day and closes around mid-October due to snow and the extreme winter environment. In mid-summer, the visitor center is also usually accessible by Old Fall River Road, a 9-mile dirt road open to one-way, uphill vehicle traffic.
Views from the Alpine Visitor Center include the Mummy Range, the Fall River Valley, and Trail Ridge to the east and the Never Summer and Medicine Bow ranges to the west and north. Hiking opportunities include the 1/4-mile round-trip Alpine Ridge Trail, commonly referred to as Huffer's Hill, and the 8-mile round-trip Ute Trail to Milner Pass. Park Rangers provide park orientation and interpretive programs on the alpine tundra.
Additional gift and food services at Fall River Pass are provided at the concession-operated Trail Ridge Store and Cafe.“

Rocky Mountain National Park | Hike Sky Pond | Camp Estes Park Colorado
Rocky Mountain National Park was the focus of this trip. We began our trip by driving from Little Rock, Arkansas to Boulder, Colorado. There we picked up food for the weekend at Trader Joe’s. Once done there we drove on to Mary’s Lake Campground in Estes Park, Colorado. The next morning we had a quick breakfast before heading to Rocky Mountain National Park. There we drove to hike at a trail that we have done once before, and really wanted to experience the amazing trial again. That trail is the Sky Pond Trail. It is such an amazing place. After we finished the Sky Pond Trial in Rocky Mountain National Park, we drove back to Mary’s Lake Campground in Estes Park. There we cleaned up before driving to Boulder, Colorado to hang out on Pearl Street. For dinner, we had an amazing meal at The Post Brewing. The next morning we cooked pancakes for breakfast. After that, we left for downtown Estes Park to do a little shopping. After a short time there, we drove back to Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove up the Old Fall River Road to the Alpine Visitor Center. We spent some time touring the area then left to drive the rest of Trail Ridge Road. We then left the park thinking we were going to explore some of the National Forest in the area. However, we ended up driving to the Wild Basin Entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. We were not aware that when we turned down this dirt road that it would be another area of the National Park that is not as well known. We found a great place on the St. Vrain Creek to put up some hammocks and relax. We left there to go back to Mary’s Lake Campground to cook dinner. The next morning packed up camp, and drove to Boulder, Colorado where we had breakfast at Tangerine.

Rocky Mountain Nation Park Snow Removal on Trail Ridge Road
Every year, Rocky Mountain National Park snowplow operators begin plowing Trail Ridge Road in mid April. Crews from the west side of the park and crews from the east side of the park move along the road and eventually meet near the Alpine Visitor Center. This happened yesterday! Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved highway in the United States reaching an elevation of 12,183 feet.
This year, snowplow operators have encountered less snow on the west side of the Continental Divide and average snow pack on the east side. Park plow operators have dealt with days of low to no visibility, wind, drifting snow and icy road conditions
Weather permitting, we are continuing to work toward opening the road on Friday, May 22, but we'll see what the next week brings. Sunshine makes a big difference in helping plow operators tackle the road!
Enjoy the following photos and video taken by park staff on this year's operations to open the road!

Scariest drive of our life @ Rocky Mountain National Park
One of the scariest roads I've ever driven on! Just don't look down...
Some clips from Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado! Since we only had 1 full day there and didn't give ourselves time to adjust to the altitude we weren't able to do as much hiking as we had hoped. So we did a scenic drive up Old Fall River Road to the Alpine Visitor Center and then back down via Trail Ridge Road. We did short hikes here and there to see water falls and then one longer hike to the top of a ridge where we got an amazing view of the mountains.

We are Anja and Bob and we have been together for 28 years, we both have been born with the Wanderlust Gene and can't get enough of wandering and exploring this beautiful world. We have lived in California, New Mexico, Colorado and Hawaii, but have wandered many states and countries. We are Full-Time RV-ers and travel and work camp in a 2010, Winnebago View 24A Diesel Sprinter. We like to bring our 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited with us to explore where the RV can't go. We are not retired yet so we have to work on the road, we work camp at National parks, Forest Service and State parks and design some t-shirts and stickers and make some jewelry that are inspired by our travels. We will be selling those on our new website soon. We enjoy boon docking in nature or dry camping off grid along the ocean, in deserts and in the mountains. (9/11/18) Grand Lake, Trail Ridge Rd, to Estes Park
This morning we check out of the Gateway Inn and have lunch at Blue Water Bakery. We explore Grand Lake a little bit, picking up a souvenir aspen vase at a art shop. On our way out we stop at the Mountain Food Market.
We head to Rocky Mountain National Park. After stopping by the visitor center we search in vain for moose. We head up Trail Ridge road and visit the Alpine Visitor Center at the top. We head down towards the east side of the park. We explore around, see some elk, including one with HUGE antlers. After we leave we stop at Smokin' Dave's for some BBQ. We explore town abit, hitting up some pokestops and gyms, and encounter a huge herd of elk near the visitor center. Its dark by the time we check into the Estes Lake Lodge.

Old Fall River Road - Rocky Mountain National Park - Colorado - Jeep JKUs - July 11, 2016
From 1920 to 1932, Fall River Road was the only motor route across Rocky Mountain National Park. Today, this road is open to uphill traffic only. Steep grades, narrow lanes, and hairpin curves still challenge motorists as they ascend more than 3,000 feet to Fall River Pass (11,796'). The more modern Trail Ridge Road replaced Fall River Road as the main route between Estes Park and Grand Lake in 1932.
SEASON 2: SOUTH WEST | ESTES Park, Colorado and Rocky Mountain National Park
We stayed in Estes Park, Colorado at the Jelly Stone RV Park and visited Rocky Mountain National Park. While there we drove Old Fall River road to Chasm Falls and up to Alpine Visitor Center.
We hiked Bear Lake, with our granddaughter and then hiked up to Alberta Falls and Mills lake with my daughter. The next day Kelly, our daughter and I hiked up to Deer Mountain, the view was beautiful by the lingering smoke from the California and Colorado left a haze in the view.
The girls went horse back riding at Jackson Stables located at the YMCA of Estes park. Great ride with great service.

Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Trail Ridge Road Rainbow Curve & Forest Canyon - Day 4 of 5
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) Trail Ridge Road Rainbow Curve & Forest Canyon - Day 4 of 5.
Rainbow Curve is one of my favorite overlooks. It has some of the best views of the park.
What you can see (Horseshoe Park):
The distinctive fan of light-colored boulders on the left of this picture is a relatively new feature on the land. A high mountain dam failed on July 15, 1982, and in a matter of hours the water violently disgorged it load on the valley floor.
What you can see from Rainbow Curve:
1 Mount Chapin (12,454)
2 Mount Chiquita (13,069)
3 Ypsilon Mountain (13,514)
4 Mount Fairchild (13,502)
5 Hagues Peak (13,560)
6 Mommy Mountain (13,425)
7 Roaring River
8 Bighorn Mountain (11,463)
9 McGregor Mountain (10,456)
10 Deer Mountain (10,013)
“Rainbow Curve, 12.8 miles from the Beaver Meadows park entrance, lies on the outside edge of a wide switchback on Trail Ridge Road as it swings around a blunt ridge between Hidden Valley and Hanging Valley. This major viewpoint at 10,829 feet is just below timberline, the transition zone between a subalpine fir and spruce forest and the alpine tundra of grass and delicate wildflowers. The vista looks down on Horseshoe Park, an open grassy valley floored by twisting Fall River. Note the light-colored alluvial fan on the north side of the park. It formed in 1982 when Lawn Lake, a small reservoir in the Mummy Range, broke after heavy rain. A deluge of water, boulders, and debris swept down into the valley.”
Just beyond the flower covered meadow lies Forest Canyon and the Continental Divide with Mount Ida. This picture, taken at high noon, shows the problem of photograph trees at this time of day. Photographs taken in the early morning or late afternoon would render the trees a truer green.
Tundra Protection Area
Hundreds of feet cause damage that takes hundreds of years to restore.
PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL!
The Glacial Landscape
Like other high mountain valleys, Forest Canyon was filled with ice and shaped by glaciers during the past two million years. Here, ice flowed through a stream valley and followed the straight line of the ancient faults. Side valleys contributed their own rivers of ice, and carved the canyons of Hayden Gorge and Gorge Lakes The Rolling terrain of the high country was untouched by glacial ice.
What you can see:
1 Longs Peak (14,255)
2 Stones Peak (12,922)
3 Spraque Mountain(12,713)
4 Hayden Spire
5 Hayden Gorge
6 Terra Tomah (12,718)
7 Mt Ida
8 Gorge Lakes

Trail Ridge Road Open All The Way Through Rocky Mountain National Park
One of Colorado’s and the country’s most spectacular drives is open for the season.
