Day 21 Lassen Volcanic National Park, Cider Cone, & Lava Beds National Park USA Road Trip Part 2
These two national areas, Lassen volcanic national park and lava beds national monument are two must stop places on any road trip on the west coast. These two California national parks have very unique experiences such as the cinder cone in Lassen and the lava tubes in the Lave Beds.
I highly recommend these two parks as must stops on any vacation, or road trip. Be careful of road closures at Lassen Volcanic national park, be sure to hike cinder cone when it is cool out and be sure to visit the southern half of the park first! For lava Beds make sure you get screened and bring gear to go into the caves. You will want knee pads, a helmet and several flashlights.
Let's start a movement. Traveling before or while in college should be commonplace and expected. The power of travel is life-changing and has the potential to enhance society overall. When you travel you learn AMAZING things about yourself, the people around you, the world around you and the opportunities there are.
Without travel I argue that you will never realize your fullest potential because there is so much that you are missing out. Traveling even the smallest of distances will change the way your mind thinks and lead to what society needs most, people who have found a passion, are pursuig it and discovering breakthrough technologies, theories, lifestyles, careers and more.
In Europe this is already commonplace to take a semester, summer, month or year off to explore the EU before or during college. I want to make it commonplace in the United States of America as well. It is possible to do it on any budget and I help people learn how to make it a reality. Find out more at:

Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway Overview - Lassen Volcanic, Lava Beds and Crater Lake National Parks
Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway Overview - Lassen Volcanic, Lava Beds and Crater Lake National Parks
This episode we take a look at a piece of road we have been traveling for the past few weeks, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway.
Learn more here volcaniclegacybyway.org
or
The volcanic legacy scenic Byway is a 500 mile long stretch of road that starts in northern California and ends just north of crater lake in Oregon. The road passes through 3 national parks, Lassen Volcanic, Lava Beds and Crater lake. All of these parks are amazing in their own way and we very much enjoyed touring the road.
We started the drive near susanville CA and worked our way up to Lassen Volcanic national park. The drive is beautiful through high country pines. We camped at Cave campground, just walking distance from a lava tube cave you can walk through. From here we explored what we could of lassen, although snow kept the primary road through the park closed in the mountains even in late June. We did hike the north park area and explored the history of the mountain which last erupted in 1914-15. They have a great visitors center and you will learn a ton. We also took a drive over to another part of the park we could access near butte lake where a lava flow split the lake in half. The flow also left a 700 foot tall cinder cone you can hike into. Views from the top are amazing with beautiful views of lassen peak and the painted dunes.
After lassen we headed north to Lava Beds national monument. We took some backroads and did not stay along the scenic byway the whole time and missed a few things like burney falls, whaleback mountain, deer mountain and mt Shasta which you can see for most of the drive due to its height. We stayed at the campground at lava beds although we just barely fit. RV’s over 30 feet will have a tough time getting into this campground or finding a spot that would fit them. This park has soo many caves to explore that are old lava tubes, amazing history of the Modoc native americans and one of the largest expanses of pictographs in the US.
Next was a drive up to Crater Lake National Park where we stayed just outside the park at the anne creek snowpark. Like lassen we could not do much at the park because most of it was still snowed in but just seeing the lake is amazing. Crater lake receives over 500 inches of snow a year making it one of the snowiest places in the US. The lake is almost 2000 feet deep and holds the world record for the clearest lake water. Once the snow is cleared a road takes you all the way around the rim and you can hike down to the lake at one point. Because we couldn't do it this time we will have to come back!
North of crater lake the Volcanic scenic byway officially ends but there is so much more volcanic areas to explore like mt Bachloer, Newberry volcanic monument, mt hood and so much more. Overall we had a great time exploring the volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. You can learn more at Volcaniclegacyscenicbyway.org or on wikipedia here

Butte Lake - Lassen Volcanic NP (HD)
Butte Lake is a lake located in the northeast section of Lassen Volcanic National Park at an elevation of 6,053 ft.
The irregularly-shaped lake lies at the northern end of Cinder Cone and the Fantastic Lava Beds, which is a complex of lava flows and a cinder cone. Some time in the mid-1770s the lava flow from the Cinder Cone flowed into and around the lake. This formed an underwater lava field. Water from Snag Lake to the south flows through the porous lava field to Butte Lake. Water from Butte Lake drains via Butte Creek, which flows north out of the parkland.
CINDER CONE - LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK

Cinder Cone is a 700-foot high volcanic dome located in the northeast corner of Lassen Volcanic National Park.
It is a short (1.2 miles), steep hike to the top of a relatively recent (at least in a geological timeframe!) volcano dome.
It is thought to have erupted in the 1650s and after a short eruption, the lava flows came out of the base instead of the dome into the surrounding area; the remnants of those lava flows are now known as the Fantastic Lava Beds.
An amazing feature of this area, is that even after all this time vegetation is very sparse in the volcanic soil.
Along the trail and at the top there are otherworldly views of lava, mountains, and trees in every direction!
Lassen Cinder Cone was a moderate hike in difficulty, but the scenery and geological history was amazing. Lassen Volcanic National Park is a must-see if you are ever in the area!
We will see you on the next adventure!

Lassen Volcanic National Park, Cinder Cone & Painted Dunes
A trip to the climb the Cinder Cone and see the Painted Dunes and the Fantastic Lava Beds, located near Butte Lake, in the NE area of the Park. The climb to the top of the Cinder Cone was tough as you are walking on loose gravel all the way.
Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park Trip
My trip to Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park, CA USA. If you look at the slides with Cinder Cone Volcano, you will notice what looks like painted sand. This discoloration is caused by the chemicals from the volcano. Also, there are two lakes shown in the video divided by a large mass of lava rock. The bed of lava rock used to be water, and the two lakes were one large lake. When Cinder Cone erupted, the immense lava flow and debris from the volcano divided the lake in two and most of the water was lost.

Emerald Lake is right beside the main highway through Lassen Volcanic National Park. My guidebooks describe nearby hiking trails:

Discover the fascinating Cinder Cone Volcano in Lassen Volcanic National Park. It was formed following eruptions around 1650. The 4-mile (6.4 km) trail is easy at the beginning then gradually becomes strenuous because of the gravel you walk in, until reaching the top of the Cinder Cone. From the top, an amazing view on the Fantastic Lava Beds, the Painted Dunes and Lassen Peak rewards all your efforts! You can go inside the crater of the Volcano.

CINDER CONE / LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK
We hiked up the spectacular Cinder Cone volcano located at Lassen Volcanic National Park.
From Butte Lake campground we hiked a short section of the old Emigrant Trail, which travelled near the side of the lava beds, through a thin forest of evergreens to reach the magnificent 700-foot Cinder Cone.
The route up the north face is quite steep but the view of the surrounding area is quite impressive! From the summit, there are views of the colorful Painted Dunes, Fantastic Lava Beds, Brokeoff, Chaos Crags, Butte and Snag Lakes, and snow-covered Mount Lassen.
Well worth a visit and a climb!
Lava Beds National Monument: 7 Caves to Explore
Lava Beds National Monument is a park full of amazing caves in Northern California. It is very remote and doesn't get a lot of visitors, but if you make it up there you are in for a treat. I have been multiple times and I still haven't explored all of the caves they have to offer. This list features 7 of my favorite caves though so it should help you to plan your first trip to the park.
