RV Camping at Bothe Napa Valley State Park
We spent President's Day Weekend camping at Bothe Napa Valley State Park. We stayed in site #11. It was tight for our 27 travel trailer and Suburban but we managed to squeeze them both in. The sites here are relatively small but the picnic area is generous. Each site has a picnic table, grill, fire ring and food locker.
Site 11 backs up to the creek and has its own access to the creek. It was an excellent location. We will be booking it again. Keep in mind, though, that this is dry camping. There are no hook ups.
During the day we explored nearby Calistoga and visited the farmers market (open Saturdays) and found ourselves spending some time in the adjacent history museum, Sharpsteen Museum. The kids enjoyed the dioramas depicting the pioneer way of life.
We were also able to visit Yountville and Downtown Napa to gather our favorite munchies.

California: Napa City
Napa is the second-largest city in California's Wine Country, after Santa Rosa with a population of 80,011 as of the 2010 census.
The name Napa was probably derived from the name given to a southern Nappan village whose native people shared the area with elk, deer, grizzlies and cougars for many centuries, according to Napa historian Kami Santiago.
At the time of the first recorded exploration into Napa Valley in 1823, the majority of the inhabitants consisted of Native American Indians. Padre José Altimira, founder of Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma, led the expedition. Spanish priests converted some natives; the rest were attacked and dispersed by Spanish soldiers.
American farmers began arriving in the 1830s.
The City of Napa was founded by Nathan Coombs in 1847.
Tensions between the white settlers and Native Americans broke into war in 1850, with a white man's death resulting in soldiers hunting down and killing all the natives they could find, driving the remainder north toward Clear Lake. In 1851, the first courthouse was erected. By 1870, the Native American population consisted of only a few laborers and servants working for the white settlers.
In the mid-1850s, Napa's Main Street rivaled that of many larger cities, with as many as 100 saddle horses tied to the fences on an average afternoon. John Patchett opened the first commercial winery in the county in 1859. The vineyard and wine cellar were located in an area that is now within the city limits of Napa.
The Lyceum movement established a facility and reading room and an agricultural society was started. The Napa Reporter founded by Alexander J. Cox in 1856 published its first weekly edition on July 4 of that year. The Napa Valley Register founded by J.I. Horrell and L. Hoxie Strong made its debut on August 10, 1863 with weekly publications until becoming a daily newspaper in 1872.
The California Gold Rush of the late 1850s expanded Napa City.
In 1858 the great silver rush began in Napa Valley, and miners eagerly flocked to the eastern hills. In the 1860s, mining carried on, on a large scale, with quicksilver mines operating in many areas of Napa County. The most noted mine was the Silverado Mine, near the summit of Mount Saint Helena.
At this time, the first wave of rural, foreign laborers from coastal villages of China's Canton province arrived in California, and at Napa County mines. Global investment bankers and national trading companies, especially British, imported this first wave of workers to do the manual jobs needed to build the area's infrastructure. In contrast, the 49ers were often literate, Anglo-Americans from the East concerned about the rights of labor.
The next wave of cheap laborers came from coastal provinces, but close to the Port of Genova in Italy.
Napa was incorporated on March 23, 1872, and reincorporated in 1874 as the City of Napa.
The Napa State Asylum for the Insane, now called Napa State Hospital, located just south of Napa, received its first patients in 1876. The Napa Valley Opera House became popular after its debut on February 13, 1880.
The Napa Journal began publication on May 16, 1890, and was succeeded by the Napa Daily Morning Journal on November 19, 1922. The paper continued publishing until June 29, 1941.
Napa had become the primary business and economic center for the Napa Valley by the dawn of the 20th century.
As agricultural and wine interests developed north of the city limits, much of the light industry, banking, commercial and retail activity in the county evolved within the city of Napa and in earlier times along the Napa River through the historic downtown.
In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Napa was known for having the largest red-light district in a California city of its size. In 1905, Napa had brothels primarily concentrated on and around Clinton Street.
Flooding of the river in downtown Napa during winter storms has been common since the town was first established.
The racial makeup of Napa was 57,754 (75.1%) White, 486 (0.6%) African American, 637 (0.8%) Native American, 1,755 (2.3%) Asian, 144 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 13,256 (17.2%) from other races, and 2,883 (3.7%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 28,923 persons (37.6%).

US winemakers squeezed out of growing China market
(13 Nov 2019) LEAD IN:
Caught in the crossfire of President Donald Trump's trade war with China, U.S. vineyards are struggling to sell Shiraz in Shanghai, Bordeaux in Beijing and Chardonnay in Shenzhen.
California's Wente Vineyards has stopped shipping to China because tariffs made US wine too pricey for Chinese consumers
STORY-LINE:
American wine producers are being squeezed out of the fast-growing Chinese market, thanks to President Trump's trade war with China.
The 16-month dispute between the world's two biggest economy has nothing to do with wine.
The Trump administration accuses China of stealing U.S. technology and forcing American companies to hand over trade secrets and has slapped tariffs on more than $360 billion worth of Chinese imports.
Since the trade dispute began, China has raised tariffs on American wines three times in retaliation for US tariffs on Chinese goods.
Those Chinese tariffs have made US wine much more expensive, leading to a steep drop in sales.
Among the casualties is California's Wente Vineyards, a family-run wine business that was among the first US winemakers to export to China 25 years ago.
California, home to Napa Valley and other famous wine-growing regions, produces about 95 percent of U.S. wine exports.
Wente, one of the country's oldest wineries, had spent years building a thriving business in China until the two countries began slapping tariffs on each other's products last year.
Three rounds of tariffs have made American wines too pricey for many Chinese consumers, who can now buy foreign wines from countries such as Australia and Chile that have free trade agreements with China.
The retaliatory tariffs that China placed on US wines has been the biggest block to our business in China over the past 25 years, the biggest disrupter to our business, said Michael Parr, Wente's vice president of international sales.
China is one of the world's fastest growing wine markets and the country is expected to soon be the second largest after the US.
After years of strong growth, US wine exports to China fell 25 percent in 2018, according to the US Wine Institute.
And they're expected to fall further this year.
Wente exports wine to more than 70 countries, and China is among its top 10 export markets, Parr said, so the tariffs are hurting overall sales.
Short term, it amounts to loss of revenues, Parr said. But long term it was lost opportunities. All the time, the money that we have spent building that market.
Wen Xu, who runs a wine shop in Beijing, said American wines used to sell very well, but sales have fallen steeply because of the tariffs.
American wine producers are hoping the US and China are moving closer to a trade agreement that will reverse the tariffs on each others' products.
Governments of the two biggest global economies have raised tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's goods in the fight over China's trade surplus and technology ambitions.
That weighs on trade worldwide and threatens to depress global economic growth that already is showing signs of slowing.

The San Francisco Bay Area (popularly referred to as the Bay Area) is a populous region surrounding the San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun Bay estuaries in the northern part of the U.S. state of California. Although the exact boundaries of the region vary depending on the source, the Bay Area is defined by the Association of Bay Area Governments to include the nine counties that border the aforementioned estuaries: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, and San Francisco. Other sources may exclude parts of or even entire counties, or expand the definition to include neighboring counties that don't border the bay such as San Benito, San Joaquin, and Santa Cruz.

Explore Colorado Boulder Restaurants
With its eclectic mix of cafes and restaurants, large farmers market, and several top-tier restaurants, Boulder could easily be dubbed a foodie’s paradise. In 2010, Bon Appetit Magazine even named Boulder as the Foodiest Town in America.
One of the best views along the Front Range is at Flagstaff House Restaurant. Three generations of the Monette Family work in the restaurant started by Don Monette. His son, Scott, is general manager and son, Mark, is chef. Some of Don’s grandchildren also work in the restaurant. It is an awarding winning restaurant including being named a “Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Restaurant 2012.” Their wine collection is one of the best in the world. Flagstaff House was the first restaurant in Colorado to put its wine list on an iPad. There are 3500 selections and 18,000 bottles in their wine list. It is one of two restaurants in Colorado and one of 75 in the world to win the Wine Spectator Grand Award. Flagstaff House has won that award every year since 1983. Flagstaff House is open seven nights a week.
Frasca Food and Wine was started by Master Sommelier Bobbie Stuckey and James Beard Foundation Award Winning Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Both were part of the team at the French Laundry in Napa Valley when it was named the number one restaurant in the world. The pair opened Frasca in 2004 with the goal to be the best neighborhood restaurant. Since 2004, Frasca has been getting international rave reviews and accolades. The food and wine is a tribute to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. With the rustic elegance and simplicity of the dishes, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to northeast Italy.

Calif. winemakers squeezed by US-China trade war
(13 Nov 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus126613
Caught in the crossfire of President Donald Trump's trade war with China, U.S. vineyards are struggling to sell Shiraz in Shanghai, Bordeaux in Beijing and Chardonnay in Shenzhen.
They are at risk of losing their foothold in one of the world's fastest-growing wine markets.
The 16-month dispute between the world's two biggest economy has nothing to do with wine. The Trump administration accuses China of stealing U.S. technology and forcing American companies to hand over trade secrets and has slapped tariffs on more than $360 billion worth of Chinese imports.
But when the Chinese lashed back with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, they put a bull's eye on American wine.
Since June, China has been imposing 93% tariffs and taxes on American wine, up from 48% before the hostilities began, according to the Wine Institute, a trade group for 1,000 California wineries and related businesses. Unless the two countries reach a ceasefire _ and they're working on it _ the levies on U.S. wine in China will ratchet up to 106% on Dec. 15.
By contrast, Chinese taxes and tariffs amount to 41% on wines from the European Union and 23% on wines from Australia, Chile, and New Zealand.
Michael Parr, vice president of international sales at Livermore, California-based Wente Vineyards, said Wente has not shipped a single bottle of wine to China'' since the latest Chinese tariffs took effect in June.
Overall, U.S. wine exports to China fell 25% in 2018, measured by volume, according to the Wine Institute. Calculated by dollars, the picture is just as ugly: U.S. Department of Agriculture figures show that U.S. wine exports to China fell 25% last year to $59.2 million and are down another 48% so far this year compared to January-September 2018.
Over the past 25 years, China, its rapid economic growth creating a middle class with a taste for luxuries, has come out of nowhere to become the No. 5 export market for U.S. wine. In 1994, U.S. wine exports to China barely registered at $123,000. In 2016, they peaked at $81.5 million.
California, home to Napa Valley and other famous wine-growing regions, produces about 95 percent of U.S. wine exports.
Wente exports wine to more than 70 countries, and China is among its top 10 export markets, Parr said, so the tariffs are hurting overall sales.
Short term, it amounts to loss of revenues, Parr said. But long term it was lost opportunities. All the time, the money that we have spent building that market.
Chinese wine lovers are also feeling the pinch. Wen Xu, who runs a wine shop in Beijing, said American wines used to sell very well, but sales have fallen steeply because of the tariffs.
American wines used to sell very well, Wen said. California is great wine country. But because of recent trade issues, they raised the tariffs. So now American wines are very expensive. They cost one-third to two-thirds more expensive than before. So, sales have fallen a lot.
