Museum at the Brig | Farragut State Park, Idaho (Vlog)
The Museum at the Brig in Farragut State Park. I’ve never travelled somewhere just to visit a museum. Museums are great, I like stopping into a good one, broadening my horizons a little bit, but they have to be part of a bigger adventure for me to want to visit. It’s for that reason The Museum at the Brig is probably my favorite Idaho museum. It’s a stop you can add to any North Idaho Adventure with ease. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Idaho has a lot of state parks, and Farragut State Park in Athol Idaho is one of our most scenic. Sitting right next to Lake Pend Oreille, Farragut is 20 miles north of Coeur d'Alene, or 26 miles south of Sandpoint, two cities well known as Pacific Northwest vacation destinations.
There's tons going on in Farragut; hiking and snow shoeing, a ropes course, disc golf, water sports, mountain biking, you get the idea. You can go for a day trip during your Coeur d’Alene vacation, camp out in your tent or RV, or stay a week in a rental cabin. And nestled in this stunning location is the Museum at the Brig. The brig was part of the Farragut Naval Training Station, a 4,000 acre training facility built in response to Pearl Harbor. There’s so much awesome history in this museum, WWII history, what military life was like back then, Idaho history, and much more. If learning about Idaho or military history isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of ghost stories and paranormal phenomenon that might perk your attention. Either way, the museum at the brig and Farragut State Park are well worth a stop on your next North Idaho Adventure.

In 1941, The U.S. government selected a stretch of land on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille to build a new naval base during World War II. Crews poured their hearts, sweat and patriotism into building Farragut Naval Training Stations. Today, all that remains of Farragut are cracked cement foundations. But with archival photos and the memories, the base's glory days come alive again.

Kayaking On Lake Pend Oreille Idaho - Farragut State Park Beaver Bay Day Use
Kayaking on Lake Pend Oreille Idaho - We went on a really fun kayaking trip to Farragut State park at the Beaver Bay day use area in beautiful North Idaho. This was a beautiful place to put our kayaks in, and spend the day swimming. We went on an overcast day and it even rained on us a bit before we left. It did get a little crowded there, so I think it's a pretty well used and visited area. The kayaking on lake Pend Oreille was absolutely beautiful. We came across many beautiful wild flowers and even a little waterfall. Once we were able to get to the other side of beaver bay, there were no people and we pretty much had that side to ourselves. We will definitely go back there and spend some more time kayaking and exploring. • Idaho City was once the largest town in the Pacific Northwest it developed around gold mining in the 1860s.
• Farragut State Park, and adjoining Lake Pend Oreille, was home to a Naval Training Station during WWII.
• In the old West mining town of Wallace the entire downtown core is listed on the National Historic Register.
• Idaho had a nationally-renowned wine industry until Prohibition closed it down. Today, it is Idaho’s fastest growing agricultural industry with three AVAs in the state.
• The Oregon Trail ran right through southern Idaho, leaving behind historic landmarks and sites to explore.
• Idaho is home to six Native American tribes: The Coeur d’Alene, Kootenai of Idaho, Nez Perce, Shoshone-Bannock, Shoshone-Paiute and Lemhi-Shoshone tribes.
• Boise is home to one of the largest Basque communities in the United States, with nearly 16,000 people.

• Lewiston is the most inland seaport on the west coast, hosting cruise and cargo ships that travel up the Columbia River.

Bayview is a community in Kootenai County, Idaho. It is located on the southwest shore of Lake Pend Oreille. It is home to Farragut State Park, which occupies the location of the former Farragut Naval Training Station. Lake Pend Oreille in the northern Idaho Panhandle is the largest lake in the state of Idaho and the 38th-largest lake by area in the United States, with a surface area of 148 square miles.. The Floating Village Bayview, Idaho has been part of the community's history since 1910. These homes are fully equipped for full-time residents or vacationing families.
The U.S. Navy's Acoustic Research Detachment operates from Bayview, testing new submarine and surface ship shapes and subsystems.
Secrets of Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho
Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced: pond-ə-ray) in the northern Idaho Panhandle is the largest lake in Idaho and the 38th largest lake by area in the United States, with a surface area of 148 square miles and 1,150 feet deep in some regions, making it the fifth deepest in the United States. It is fed by the Clark Fork River and the Pack River, and drains via the Pend Oreille River. It is surrounded by national forests and a few small towns, with the largest population on the lake at Sandpoint. The majority of the shoreline is non-populated. All but the southern tip of the lake is in Bonner County. The southern tip is in Kootenai County and is home to Farragut State Park, formerly the Farragut Naval Training Station during World War II of which a small part is still active and conducts US Navy acoustic underwater submarine research. Submarine Races are Real.
