Your fully licensed tour guide will take you to popular highlights in the Quarter including St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square along with some lesser-known gems, all while telling you fascinating stories about your surroundings.

RV TRIP TIP: New Orleans, LA
Like most RVers, we spend a lot of time exploring the wide open spaces of the great outdoors. But there are definitely times we like to visit large and medium size cities too. New Orleans is definitely one of those places and a great topic for our 50th YouTube video!
One problem with RVing in or around a city can be the availability of decent, reasonably priced camping. Usually the larger the city, the harder it is to find a campsite, especially for a large motorhome. Even some smaller cities have very limited facilities for RVers. All it takes is one good campground to do the trick, and that's exactly what we have in the New Orleans area: Bayou Segnette State Park.
Bayou Segnette SP is a hidden gem, only about 12 miles from the French Quarter and downtown New Orleans. It offers paved roads and sites, 50-amp electric hook-ups, a dump station and modern restroom facilities. Best of all, it's a beautiful camping environment and reasonably priced too.
A little Googling uncovered another great find for those wanting to learn more about New Orleans (and other cities too), while getting some exercise at the same time: Free Tours By Foot. They have a terrific business model where knowledgeable certified tour guides take people on free walking tours. All you pay is whatever gratuity you feel is appropriate. No strings, and great tours. And no, we are not paid to promote them! We just love great finds, and Free Tours By Foot is definitely one of them!
Our first tour was through the Garden District, starting in one of the many historic cemeteries located around the city. The district is also full of historic houses, as well as those of several Hollywood celebrities who make New Orleans their home.
Our second tour of the day was through the famous French Quarter, which is surely one of the most colorful places you'll ever visit. We strolled down Bourbon Street, listened to talented musicians and visited St. Louis cathedral.
We had time after each tour to enjoy some of New Orleans' classic Creole dishes: gumbo, po boys, shrimp éttouffée, fried okra, jambalaya, greens & cornbread.
If you love food, music, history or the unusual (or all of the above), New Orleans is for you. Creole cooking is delicious and the eclectic mix of food, music and partying is fun and energizing. Of course if you plan to come to town during Mardi Gras, better reserve your campsite way, way in advance. ;-)
Next time you're heading South, be sure to make time to visit this wonderful city.
The piano music is my own performance of Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag from 1899.

Epic NOLA Bike Ride Bourbon St to Esplanade Ave to City Park
Rode my bike from my place in the French Quarter down Bourbon St. to Esplanade Ave. and on to a trail in City Park that I didn't know existed. I saw rabbits, squirrels, birds and I witnessed a guy catch a fish. It was the best bike ride that I've been on in the 5+yrs that I've been here.
Visiting New Orleans During Mardi Gras // RV Sometimer Life
We've been to New Orleans before but never by RV. We were planning to go after our stay at the Sea Rim State Park in Sabine Pass but then we had the slide issue and needed to get to RV Masters, a repair place, which meant going a few days early. Landing us in New Orleans in the middle of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras was a new experience for us but we were glad to see it end so that we could browse around with fewer crowds. We liked the parade but for some reason the temperature that day plummeted and I was so cold and trapped downtown until the parade was done it's route. Lesson learned make an escape plan in advance! We went on to tour around and enjoy The Big Easy, from Cafe du Monde, to the Audubon Insectarium, to the vintage street cars. Unfortunately, we didn't get the slide repaired after all of this but onward to the next stop.

PSA for Virtual Levee Breach Tour in New Orleans
People everywhere still want to see where the levees failed in New Orleans during Katrina in 2005. Made possible through a collaboration of many groups and organizations, this virtual tour allows one to virtually visit three major breach sites and their associated neighborhoods. The app brings the history of the disaster right to the palm of your hand, in a free app. This PSA explains just how cool it is!
One can visit the Southeast breach of the Industrial Canal, which flooded the Lower Ninth Ward, the East breach of the London Avenue Canal, which flooded Gentilly, and the 17th Street Canal breach, which flooded Lakeview. The tour also spotlights the Louisiana State Museum's Living with Hurricanes exhibit housed in the Presbytere Building in Jackson Square.
Brown's Winter 2011 Southern Bicycle Tour
On December 11th, we pushed off through the cobblestone streets of Charleston, SC and headed South. We followed the coast through the state of Georgia to St. Augustine, FL. After sipping from the legendary Fountain of Youth we pointed our tires West and trek across the Florida pan handle. We continued west through Alabama, Mississippi, and finished in New Orleans Louisiana. Oh, and our dog Ollie accompanied us along the way.
Here are some quick stats from our trip:
- 1,168 Miles
- 98 Hours on the saddle
- 32 Days on the road
- 6 States
- 2 Flat Tires (Andy & Ollie)
- 1 Jar of Peanut Butter
- 0 Accidents or Injuries

Mardi Gras 2018 Adventure on Bourbon St.
I made the 9 hour drive over to New Orleans to stay at the Four Points Sheridan located in the heart of the French Quarter. After joining my friends in the room we make more friends from the balcony with the megaphone. Lots of preparation goes into this huge celebration all for the sake of fun. We get a lot of beads from Mardi Gras Imports which has been our go to bead shop forever. This year Jim went to Whole Foods and got all natural mixers and snacks for the room.
