The Money War: Cotton, Greenbacks and Gold
We recently took a field trip to the American Numismatic Association's Money Museum in downtown Colorado Springs where we had occasion to speak with curator Doug Mudd about the museum's current exhibit, A House Divided, Money of the Civil War. The exhibit explores the roles the monetary systems of the North and the South played in waging the Civil War, while also providing an insight into the development of the dissociation of currency directly backed by silver or gold in the United States. Though our nation is far removed from the Civil War, there are interesting resonances with regard to our present-day monetary policy in the face of the economic downturn.

Freedman's Bank 150th Anniversary Celebration
On March 3, 2015, Operation HOPE Forums and the Afro-American History Society of the National Archives (AAHS) will recognize the 150th anniversary of the Freedman's Bank. Established on March 3, 1865, by President Abraham Lincoln, the Bank was a landmark institution that had over $57 million in deposits and 70,000 depositors. The Bank's records remain the single largest repository of lineage-linked African-American genealogy, containing upwards of 480,000 names.
Members of AAHS will present Freedman's Bank records at the National Archives, and there will be a moderated discussion with Operation HOPE Founder John Hope Bryant, Ambassador Andrew Young, ESSENCE Magazine Editor-In-Chief Vanessa DeLuca, and other dignitaries on the historical significance of the Bank and how its unfinished journey still resonates today in issues of poverty, income inequality, and race relations. A reception will follow.
The event is free and open to the public, register online.

In which John Green teaches you about the United States in the 1920s. They were known as the roaring 20s, but not because there were lions running around everywhere. In the 1920s, America's economy was booming, and all kinds of social changes were in progress. Hollywood, flappers, jazz, there was all kinds of stuff going on in the 20s. But as usual with Crash Course, things were about to take a turn for the worse. John will teach you about the Charleston, the many Republican presidents of the 1920s, laissez-faire capitalism, jazz, consumer credit, the resurgent Klan, and all kinds of other stuff.

Deep Soul: Twentieth-Century African American Freedom Struggles and the Making of the Modern World
(04:14 Main Presentation, 59:18 Q&A)
Twentieth-Century African American Freedom Struggles transformed both US and World History. These seminal liberation struggles include the important yet relatively unknown series of early twentieth-century southern African American streetcar boycotts as well as the iconic Civil Rights-Black Power Insurgency (1935-75). First, Waldo Martin examines why and how these foundational freedom struggles proved essential to the making of the modern African American Freedom Movement. Second, he examines the centrality of the modern African American Freedom Movement to both the creation of the modern United States and the development of the modern world. Waldo Martin is the Alexander F. & May T. Morrison Professor of American History & Citizenship at the University of California, Berkeley. [1/2020] [Show ID: 35148]

Dorothea Lange Perspective with Drew Heath Johnson, curator from the Oakland Museum of California
With hardship and suffering as consistent areas of focus throughout her career, Dorothea Lange created arresting portraits with the aim of sparking reform. Join Drew Heath Johnson as he examines the central theme of Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing: the power of Lange’s photography to sway people’s minds and spur them to action. Johnson will look at both the effects of her imagery and her intentions, which could be quite contradictory.
Drew Heath Johnson has worked at the Oakland Museum since 1989. His many exhibitions at the museum include Silver & Gold: Cased Images of the California Gold Rush; Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California; and Capturing Light: Masterpieces of California Photography, 1850–2000, and Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing. His many duties include the guardianship and sharing of Dorothea Lange’s entire personal archive, a collection with more than six thousand vintage prints and forty thousand negatives, along with the artist’s personal correspondence, field notes, proof sheets, and working documents. He is the recipient of a California Book Award for the catalog of Capturing Light. A native Californian, he has been a student of photography since purchasing his first daguerreotype at the age of fourteen.

Ken Burns & Henry Louis Gates, Jr. in conversation with Michel Martin
Documentarian Ken Burns and scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., join together to discuss the prevailing political fault line in the US: race. In this illuminating and cogent exchange, they examine why race is critical to their understanding of America and their work—and how, as a nation, we deal with race today. Their discussion is complemented with clips from Jackie Robinson, Burns' forthcoming epic about the impact and legacy of the first black baseball player to play in the major leagues, and Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise, Gates' chronicle of the civil rights movement culminating in the election of Obama. (Both films are scheduled to premiere on PBS in 2016.)
Both figures have explored how race is part of the American fabric in their work. Burns’ landmark Emmy Award-winning television series The Civil War and Gates’ unprecedented four-part series African American Lives explore not just the role African-Americans have played throughout our history, but also how race, conceptions of race, and ideas about freedom and independence influence our politics and policies. They trace the historical significance of race from abolitionism to civil rights to the war on poverty—and consider what it means to have an African-American president.
