Scottish Opera: The Rake's Progress at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh 27, 29 & 31 March 2012
Set in the grimy underbelly of 18th-century London, The Rake's Progress is a highly theatrical tale of one man's struggle to save his soul. World-renowned Scottish director David McVicar and Olivier award-winning designer John Macfarlane bring this darkly gothic story to the stage in an exquisitely detailed production that really packs a punch.

Edinburgh Showcase 2019: 'Total Immediate Collective Imminent Terrestrial Salvation'
National Theatre of Scotland production in association with the Royal Court Theatre, Teatro do Bairro Alto, Lisbon and Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts (ACCA), Co-commissioned with Royal Court Theatre
The National Theatre of Scotland doesn’t have its own building, but instead brings theatre to venues ranging from the biggest stages to the smallest community halls. As Scotland’s national theatre, it showcases Scottish culture at home and around the world. Its past Edinburgh Fringe hit shows include Black Watch and The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart.
Tim Crouch has established a reputation as one of the UK’s most progressive and thought provoking writer/performers, and has toured extensively in the UK and internationally. His work rejects theatrical conventions and makes the most of the live encounter with its audience. He recently created his first TV series for the BBC, Don’t Forget the Driver, starring co-writer Toby Jones.
Total Immediate Collective Imminent Terrestrial Salvation features three performers, including Crouch. It explores the story of a man who manipulates a group of people to believe in something that isn’t true. Audience and actors turn the pages of the play script together, reading and observing illustrations, as the action unfolds. At times, audience members are invited to read aloud. Exploring manipulation and the nature of truth in an age of political misdirection, this promises to be a thrilling and intense theatrical experience.
Total Immediate Collective Imminent Terrestrial Salvation premieres in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. The British Council’s biennial Edinburgh Showcase is the single biggest opportunity for UK theatre companies to introduce their work to international promoters. The programme comprises new work that represents the very best of contemporary theatre and dance, reflecting the breadth and diversity of British performing arts. The 2019 Edinburgh Showcase takes place between Monday 19-Saturday 24 August 2019.
Edinburgh Showcase 2019: 'roots' by 1927
1927 creates exhilarating productions that synchronise performance and live music with handcrafted animation. The company burst onto the international theatre scene after its show, The Animals and Children Took To The Streets, was selected for the British Council's Edinburgh Showcase 2011. Since then, the company has won multiple awards for its dynamic and strikingly visual productions, which often have a dark, macabre undertone. 1927 has toured to 42 countries, from studio theatres to opera houses – which shows how well its work translates to different cultural environments.
Sitting in the British Library is an unassuming red book, The Aarne Index. It categorises thousands of folktales, offering a glimpse into the imaginations of pre-industrialised people. roots is a medley of these rarely told stories. Tales of tyrannical ogres, magic birds’ hearts and very, very fat cats are brought to life with 1927's signature fusion of animation and storytelling. The live score involves Peruvian prayer boxes, donkey’s jaws, violins and musical saws. 1927 hopes the work will encourage us to consider how the narratives of our forebears could help to shape the narratives of our future.
roots has its European premiere in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh International Festival.

What We've Done So Far
Over the past eight weeks, Teatro Luna has toured through sixteen cities in eight states across the USA bringing our humor, flirty wit, and incisive cultural critique! Our work uniquely explores gender, race, class and identity while provoking social and political dialogue and change, and for the first time ever, we were able to reach hundreds of women and men, many from underserved communities and towns without access to live theatre, over the course of less than two months. We have made many friends and allies in cities all over the United States, and have started dialogues about important topics such as domestic violence, generational gaps, skin color, immigration reform and Trayvon Martin in many of those cities, and also provided people a platform to continue to engage with us about these topics online. We have provided three free shows and two free workshops while on the road, despite our last Indiegogo campaign only raising enough money for one show (we just couldn't say no!) We have engaged with burgeoning Latina performance troupes all over the country and are committed to providing them with the tools and resources they need to grow. We are doing our part to revive the old teatro touring movement, all while intently promoting the idea that, economics, geography or previous notions and preconceptions that theatre is for the 1% cannot prevent people from experiencing life-changing art. And if that weren't enough, immediately following the American tour, we headed across the pond to perform our new and original work at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
What We Need
A million dollars! What? The exchange rate is really high here!
Just kidding.
We need $5,000 to continue producing our groundbreaking work here in Scotland. Our housing and travel expenses in the second leg of the tour far exceeded what was originally budgeted and we ran into some logistical struggles along the way that further complicated our financial situation. But where there's a will, there's a way, and we are, more than ever, determined to rise above and present the shows that took American audiences by storm in the United Kingdom for a truly global audience.
The Impact
For the past twelve seasons, we have been sharing our autobiographical and ethnographic work with the people of Chicago and universities and colleges all around the USA, but but earlier this year, we decided it was time to expand! Some of the people we reached on this tour never had heard of Teatro Luna before that night. Some had never seen live theatre, and for those who had, the only Latinas they might have seen represented are maids and gang bangers. And most of them had never heard THEIR STORIES played out on stage.
If you donate to our campaign, you are not only aiding our mission by providing opportunities to female artists of color, you are also contributing to the enormous impact that Teatro Luna can make on these communities with our shows, workshops and talkbacks. Of the more than 2,400 performances from all over the world happening at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we are the ONLY All-Latina Theatre Company represented. (What?!?!) Help us share our message and continue to reinforce positive views of Latino/as with the world by donating today!
Other Ways You Can Help
If you can't give cash today, you can still help! We make a lot happen with a little, and we are in need of a lot of love and support to complete our journey. If you or anyone you know have access to the following things and you would like to continue sharing your Luna love past our performances in your city, we would really appreciate it. Here's a list of other things we need:
- Housing in Edinburgh from August 14 - 25 (we're flexible and can make it work with only one bedroom!)
- Housing in Dublin at the beginning of September (half the company has a long layover there)
- Visa/Mastercard/AmEx gift cards in any amount (c'mon, you know you got them for Christmas and STILL have never used them)
- Extra airline miles that are about to expire (we WILL use them to get to our port of departures in Europe at the end of the month)
- Inviting your friends in the UK to our performances in Edinburgh (and tell them to bring all their friends and all their friends' friends!)
- Spreading the word on the campaign to your friends who would be interested in our journey and would be able to contribute (we all have them!)
- Prayers and blessings and vigils and bendiciones and good vibes sent to us from wherever you are (we could sure use them!)
- Liking and Sharing our photos on FB, twitter, instgram, and commenting! It spreads the word!
Please visit to give today!
