Latvia: Is Russia still the enemy? | VPRO Documentary
In Latvia the Soviet era is still visible, although the government tries to let the past be past. How is the relationship between Latvia and Russia nowadays? How is it for people in Latvia to live with a heritage that has become a burden? A documentary about Latvia and its past and new relationship with Russia.
The Baltic states still have a clear memory of the Soviet Union domination. Although Latvia is a NATO country, the fear of the Russians can be felt. Jelle visits a Latvian partisan, who fought the Soviets from the dense forests for years. And we visit the city of Daugavpils, where ninety percent of the people are Russian. How do they see Putin?
In this eight-part travel series the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between the powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Latvia is probably the only country where the SS still gather every year. The veterans of the Latvian Legion fought alongside the Nazi`s in their own SS brigade. On March 16 they celebrate a battle in which they defeated the Red Army. For Latvians Germans are the liberators. Corstius meets veterans and explains why Latvian are still called `fascists` until a real fight on the street rises around this question.
One of the Soviet´s prisons in Latvia is now a museum, which draws thousands of visitors every year. The building has been left as it was. As a tourist you can book a tour and experience life as a prisoner. An Interrogation Russian style is included in the ticket, if you pay extra you can spend even a night in an isolation cell. How is it to experience such a tour and why are people doing it? While Russia is glorifying its Soviet past, Latvia is banishing it or making an attraction of it. In Europe, the Baltic states are the fiercest opponents of Putin´s Russia. Cortsius meets Sandra Kalniete, founder of the Latvian Popular Front, who fought for Latvian independence and became the first Foreign Minister.

Germany: International probe leads to three arrests in Darknet marketplace

Three suspects were arrested following an international investigation into ‘Wall Street Market’, an illegal online marketplace, German police announced in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt, on Friday
‘Wall Street Market’ trafficked in drugs, stolen data and forged documents, among other illegal goods. Hosted on the Darknet – meaning users cannot find the website using normal web browsers – it was reportedly the second largest online illegal marketplace in the world.
An international cooperative effort included agents from the US attorney's office, the FBI, and Europol.
What made this case so special is that it was a procedure against the alleged persons in charge of a Darknet marketplace, and that is an exceptionally difficult investigative effort, said Georg Ungefuk, spokesperson for the Frankfurt chief prosecutor's office, who explained investigations are still ongoing which could potentially lead to more arrests of people who were active on the platform.
US Federal Prosecutor Ryan White said, I can’t comment on ongoing investigations, as I’m sure you know, however, it should be no surprise that we are very interested in pursuing additional actions in this case.

STORYLINE:
Gay rights activists gathered in Latvia on Sunday before a gay pride parade that was expected to face angry protests from conservative groups.
About 500 demonstrated in a popular downtown park in Riga that had its entrances and exits blocked by police to prevent protesters disrupting them.
Some were concerned they were being branded as paedophiles because people did not understand the difference between homosexuality and paedophilia.
They do not understand who are gay or lesbian, said Elvira, a gay right campaigner. They confuse us as paedophiles. But paedophilia is different to being gay.
The parade in was the culmination of a four-day series of events called the 'Riga Friendship Days and Pride 2007' that began on Thursday.
Last year an informal meeting of gay rights advocates in the Baltic country drew a crowd of irate demonstrators, some of whom threw eggs and excrement at the meeting's participants.
Outraged by scenes of unrest last year, politicians and gay-rights advocates from across Europe attended the event, which was Riga's second gay pride parade after the inaugural march in 2005.

With breathtaking material Finding Ali unveils the occupation of Afghanistan, the logical development of mistrust, disappointment and rage from ordinary Afghans against the U.S.A. and the Nato. They were promised peace and development, but were given a brutal War against Terror.
Being welcomed with open arms a decade ago, the filmmaker now experiences an overwhelming feeling of rejection, painfully culminating in a road-side attempt on his life.

STORYLINE
The three Baltic nations - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - held special events to mark the 20th anniversary of one of the key events in their struggle against Soviet occupation.
On 23 August, 1989, millions of people joined hands across the three countries to call for an end to Soviet occupation, forming a nearly unbroken 400 miles (644 kilometres) long human chain, known as the Baltic Way.
The event was staged on the 50th anniversary of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, which carved up Eastern Europe between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
On Sunday morning, people gathered for emotional services in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius and Riga, the capital of Latvia - among others - to commemorate the event.
Later in the morning, Baltic leaders joined together at a flag-raising ceremony in Vilnius' Independence Square, laying wreaths at the foot of a monument, as the commemorative Baltic Assembly torch was relit in the square.
In the evening, there was a huge bonfire and traditional dancing in the countryside 16 kilometres (10 miles) outside Vilnius.
Lithuanian president, who attended the festivities said the event celebrated the people's history and their fight for independence.
The 1939 non-aggression pact signed between German and Soviet Foreign Ministers Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov contained the so-called secret protocols under which Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union divided Central and Eastern Europe.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were given to Stalin and in June 1940 all three countries were annexed by the Soviet Union.
Apart from a three-year occupation by the Nazis, the Baltic states remained part of the Soviet Union for the next 50 years.
