Around Kansas Finney County Museum October 2, 2019
Well, my daughter Noelle was out with kids the other day and was able to get to the Finney County Museum and take a few pictures there in Garden City. I would like to share over the next weeks or months, more of our county museums with you because we have some real treasures and you'll sense if Finney County is one of them, Morton County is another one, I hope to share that with you real soon but Finney County, man, you've got some marvelous exhibits from the heroic to the tragic and everything in between. Let's take a look at this treasure in Garden City.
The founding fathers had a vision in the late 1870s to turn this part of the great American desert into a town that would last. The thriving town of Garden City is a testament to their vision and perseverance. The first years of this young town's history are full of people who were industrious, imaginative and resourceful. By 1883, trainloads of Easterners were coming out to lay claim on this fertile river bottom land lured by land speculators and their own dreams of being part of westward expansion.
The population soared to over 6,000 during those boom years from 1885 to 1888. Many of the people lived in tents, dugouts or covered wagons waiting for houses to be built. Not all of those who came stayed. Those who stayed kept the town going. The Finney County Museum tells these stories through artifacts and exhibits that are compelling and engaging. Some are tragic as in perhaps the county's most tragic story with the murders of the Clutter family. Some are innovative an original as personified by Buffalo Jones.
The Santa Fe Trail Exhibit connects Garden City and Finney County to the New Mexican Southwest and to Far flung Missouri. All are interesting and together, they weave the fabric of this corner of Kansas. Through tumultuous and difficult times, many hearty souls have brought their ideas, work ethic and families to grow and prosper. Now, in the beginning of this century, Finney County is still welcoming newcomers and is the fastest-growing county in Kansas.
The museum is located on South Fourth Street at the entrance to the zoo and in the midst of a beautiful park. The Brown Bag Lunch Series is going on now, the second Wednesday of each month from noon to 1:00 PM. Check out their Facebook page for a schedule.

2017 Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony
There are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Garden City Police Department and Finney County Sheriff’s Office. Nearly 60,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting in approximately 16,000 injuries. Since the first recorded death in 1791, almost 20,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty. The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families.
Kansas
Kansas /ˈkænzəs/ KAN-zəs is a U.S. state located in the Midwestern United States. It is named after the Kansa Native American tribe which inhabited the area. The tribe's name (natively kką:ze) is often said to mean people of the wind or people of the south wind, although this was probably not the term's original meaning. Residents of Kansas are called Kansans. For thousands of years, what is now Kansas was home to numerous and diverse Native American tribes. Tribes in the Eastern part of the state generally lived in villages along the river valleys. Tribes in the Western part of the state were semi-nomadic and hunted large herds of bison. Kansas was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue.
When it was officially opened to settlement by the U.S. government in 1854, abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri rushed to the territory to determine whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. Thus, the area was a hotbed of violence and chaos in its early days as these forces collided, and was known as Bleeding Kansas. The abolitionists eventually prevailed and on January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as a free state. After the Civil War, the population of Kansas grew rapidly when waves of immigrants turned the prairie into farmland. Today, Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural states, producing high yields of wheat, sorghum, and sunflowers. Kansas is the 15th most extensive and the 34th most populous of the 50 United States.

Migration Stories: Don Stull-How Does Population Turnover Affect the Area?
The Migration Stories Project at the University of Kansas presents: An Interview with Don Stull.
In this segment, Dr. Stull discusses how a highly mobile population connected to the meat packing industry affects local communities.
Don Stull, Professor Emeritus of Sociolcultural Anthropology at the University of Kansas and author of the book Slaughterhouse Blues, is an applied cultural anthropologist who has conducted research throughout the United States. For the past 20 years his work has focused on the meat and poultry industry in North America, rural industrialization and rapid growth communities, and industrial agriculture's impact on farmers and rural communities. Don is currently studying the impact of the 2004 termination of the federal tobacco program on tobacco farmers in western Kentucky. Don was editor-in-chief of Human Organization, the leading international journal of applied social science, from 1999 through 2004, and president of the Society for Applied Anthropology from 2005 to 2007.
This web series is a part of the Migration Stories project and is sponsored by the Kansas African Studies Center and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Migration Stories seeks to gather stories in various forms about both the experience of immigration for Africans and the impact of changing demographics for Midwestern communities. Throughout our history, personal stories have played a crucial role in defining what it means to be American and in illuminating the meaning of America as a country. For immigrants, stories are a way to integrate themselves into the narrative of the nation even as their stories of migration change that narrative. For those who are a part of host communities, stories about migration are a way to understand the place of new arrivals in their midst, and a way to transform our ideas about what it means to be American.

Rochester () is a city on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York. With a population of 208,046 residents, Rochester is the seat of Monroe County and the third most populous city in New York state, after New York City and Buffalo. The metropolitan area has a population of just over 1 million people. It is about 73 miles (117 km) east of Buffalo and 87 miles (140 km) west of Syracuse.
Rochester was one of America's first boomtowns, initially due to the fertile Genesee River Valley, which gave rise to numerous flour mills, and then as a manufacturing hub. Several of the region's universities (notably the University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology) have renowned research programs. Rochester is the site of many important inventions and innovations in consumer products. The Rochester area has been the birthplace to Kodak, Western Union, French's, Bausch & Lomb, Gleason and Xerox, which conduct extensive research and manufacturing of industrial and consumer products. Until 2010, the Rochester metropolitan area was the second-largest regional economy in New York State, after the New York City metropolitan area. Rochester's GMP has since ranked just below Buffalo, New York, while exceeding it in per-capita income. The 25th edition of the Places Rated Almanac rated Rochester as the most livable city in 2007, among 379 U.S. metropolitan areas. In 2010, Forbes rated Rochester as the third-best place to raise a family in the United States. In 2012, Kiplinger rated Rochester as the fifth-best city in the United States for families, citing low cost of living, top public schools, and a low jobless rate.Rochester is a Globa ...
