Backpacking Fires Creek Rim - Nantahala National Forest, NC
A difficult 2-day backpacking trip on the Fires Creek Rim Trail in Nantahala National Forest. The Fires Creek Recreation Area is located in the extreme southwest region of North Carolina and managed by the Tusquitee Ranger District of the national forest. The Rim Trail is ~25.5 miles and makes a horseshoe loop around the Fires Creek Gorge following the crest of the Valley River Mountains (north) and the Tusquitee Mountains (south). These two mountain ranges meet at the eastern end of this box canyon around a collection of ~5,000-foot heath balds. There is no easy way to access this part of the rim, it is isolated and requires a difficult hike from any direction.
I went clockwise from the picnic area beside Leatherwood Falls, ascending steeply to the first big peak on the Valley River Rim, Big Peachtree Bald. On this stretch forest fires created great views southwest of Georgia, including Brasstown Bald, and east of Tusquitee Bald at the head of the gorge. From there it is up-and-down for many miles with winter views along the rim. I camped at County Corner Junction after 14.5 miles. The next day started with the eastern rim with occasional views, culminating at Tusquitee Bald at 5,240 feet. Snowstorms had blown in during the morning, and obscured views for me. The snow got steadily heavier over the next hour, dropping 2-3 inches on the Tusquitee Rim. After crossing Potrock and Matlock Balds I decided to bail from the rim on the first trail I crossed. It was windy, wet, cold, and my gimpy left leg was painful from constant slipping + my pack weight. I took the little-used Bald Springs Branch Trail, which was hard to follow in the snow, then had to hike 6+ miles on FR 340.
Hike was 27.9 miles over 2 days of backpacking, approximately 16 hours of hiking.

This is a fairly typical example of Fires Creek in Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina. I portaged this one due to that nasty log just downstream of a hole. Note also the previously chainsawed log in the entrance, and the additional log in the run out downstream. There is a lot of wood in Fires Creek.

Chambers Mountain Lookout Tower - Newfound Mountains, NC
Chambers Mountain is home to one of the few remaining accessible lookout towers in North Carolina. The peak at 4,509 feet, is located in the Newfound Mountains west of Asheville and north of the Pigeon River Valley. The communications towers on the peak can be seen from I-40 as you drive by the U.S. 74 exit to Waynesville. The hike is straightforward, follow the gravel and gated Lookout Point from Chambers Mountain Rd to the summit in 2.4 miles. The grade is surprisingly steep. Halfway to the summit is a cleared meadow for cattle grazing where there are good views west and south of the Great Balsam Mountains around Waynesville. Unfortunately these were the only views I had since the cloud ceiling hadn't lifted when I reached the summit. Chambers Mountain is one of two actively staffed lookout towers in NC. The tower is 45 feet high, and although the top cab is closed you can still climb the stairs. If you have a nice day you will see the Newfound and Bald Mountains to the north/northwest, Great Smoky Mountains to the west, Plott Balsam Mountains to the southwest, and Great Balsam Mountains to the south. As I got close to my car I looked back up and clearly saw the towers on the summit, I started my hike an hour too early.
Hike was 4.8 miles in 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Chunky Gal/Boteler Fire
On November 7th, 2016 near sunset I visited the summit of Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest peak to take this 12 minute timelapse of the Chunky Gal Mountain fire. In the valley foreground is Lake Chatuge and the town of Hiawassee, Georgia. The natural amphitheater in which lay the unincorporated community of Shooting Creek behind Chunky Gal Mountain was totally cloaked in smoke.

The Boteler fire was discovered burning on the Tusquitee Ranger District of the National Forests of North Carolina 15 miles east of Murphy, North Carolina on October 25. It is located in a roadless area on the Nantahala National Forest west of Chunky Gal Mountain near Hayesville. The District immediately responded, but due to steep, rugged terrain and extremely dry conditions, it was unsafe for firefighters to attack the fire directly at the fire’s edge. Although large helicopters dropped water on the fire and slowed its progression, it continued to grow.
Firefighters began building firelines away from the fire’s edge with hand tools and bulldozers to keep the fire contained, with the priority on areas south of the fire where structures are threatened. Crews began assessing Mill, Shooting, Vineyard, and Thompson Creek and Muskrat Branch areas for structure defense, which in addition to hand and dozer firelines includes installing portable water tanks known as “pumpkins,” hose lays and sprinkler systems.
The Southern Area Red Team assumed management of the fire on November 3rd. The team is made up of professionals who manage large incidents such as hurricanes and wildfires across the country. The team is based out of the South and includes experts in operations, logistics, finance and planning. Team members are from federal, state and local organizations.

Teen dies after fight outside middle school
A 13-year old girl from Attucks Middle School ended up on life support at Texas Children's Hospital two days after a fight off campus.
Kashala Francis' mother, Mamie Jackson, says her daughter told her she was attacked by two girls after school on Thursday, and that another girl later jumped in and kicked her in the head.
Jackson says when her daughter returned home Thursday afternoon, she had a bruise on her face, but insisted she was okay.
