Lynching is the practice of murder by a group by extrajudicial action. Lynchings in the United States rose in number after the American Civil War in the late 1800s, following the emancipation of slaves; they declined in the 1920s but have continued to take place into the 21st century. Most lynchings were of African-American men in the South, but women were also lynched, and white lynchings of blacks occurred in Midwestern and border states, especially during the 20th-century Great Migration of blacks out of the South. The purpose was to enforce white supremacy and intimidate blacks by racial terrorism. On a per capita basis lynchings were also common in California and the Old West, especially of Latinos, although they represented less than 10% of the national total. Native Americans and Asian Americans were also lynched. Other ethnicities (white, Finnish-American, Jewish, Irish, Italian-American) were occasionally lynched.
The stereotype of a lynching is a hanging, because hangings are what crowds of people saw, and are also easy to photograph. Some hangings were professionally photographed and sold as postcards, which were popular souvenirs in some parts of the U.S. Victims were also killed by mobs in a variety of other ways: shot repeatedly, burned alive, forced to jump off a bridge, dragged behind cars, and the like. Sometimes they were tortured as well, with body parts sometimes removed and sold as souvenirs. Occasionally lynchings were not fatal (see Lynching survivors in the United States). A mock lynching, putting the rope around the neck of someone suspected of concealing information, might be used to compel confessions.According to the Tuskegee Institute, 4,743 people were lynched between 1882 and 1968 in the United States, including 3,446 African Americans and 1,297 whites. More than 73 percent of lynchings in the post-Civil War period occurred in the Southern states. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, 4,084 African-Americans were lynched between 1877 and 1950 in the South.Lynchings were most frequent from 1890 to the 1920s, with a peak in 1892. Lynchings were often large mob actions, attended by hundreds or thousands of watchers, sometimes announced in advance in newspapers and in one instance with a special train. However, in the later 20th century lynchings became more secretive, and were conducted by smaller groups of people.
According to Michael Pfeifer, the prevalence of lynching in postbellum America reflects lack of confidence in the due process judicial system. Speaker Biography: Pénélope Bagieu was born in Paris in 1982 to Corsican and Basque parents. She is a best-selling graphic novel author, and her editorial illustrations have appeared all over the French media. In America, her graphic novels include Exquisite Corpse, California Dreamin' and, most recently, Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World (First Second). She blogs, plays drums in a rock band and watches lots of nature shows. Bagieu is also the creator of the animated film No More Laughter, and she has done work on many advertising campaigns.
Speaker Biography: Tillie Walden is a cartoonist and illustrator from Ausin, Texas. She is a graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies and is a two-time Eisner nominee and Ignatz Award winner. She is the author of the graphic novels Spinning (First Second) and On a Sunbeam. Spinning is about Walden's years as a competitive figure skater. She lives in Los Angeles.
Speaker Biography: Ed Piskor is the writer and artist behind X-Men: Grand Design (Marvel). This deeply personal and heavily researched reimagining of the origins of the world famous X-Men incorporates the past 40 years of the title's history and has been met with critical acclaim from all corners of the comics world. Piskor is also the creator behind Hip Hop Family Tree, the New York Times best-selling series that won the 2015 Eisner Award for best reality-based work. Piskor's other published works include Wizzywig and, in collaboration with Harvey Pekar, American Splendor and The Beats: A Graphic History. Ed teaches classes on comics and lives in Pennsylvania.

UC Riverside researchers conducted interviews with elders from the Chemehuevi/Southern Paiute, Cahuilla, Serrano, Kumeyaay, Luiseño and Fort Sill Apache tribes. Preservation of these songs is important to tribal elders, many of whom are encouraging younger members to learn the songs. There also is a rich tradition of new songs that reflect the challenges of contemporary life.
The resulting 40-minute DVD -- titled Keeping the Songs Alive -- has been presented at several schools and gatherings of Native Americans, and is available to the public. More than 40 hours of videotaped interviews and songs are archived at UCR's California Center for Native Nations and Special Collections and Archives of the UCR Libraries.

Demolition Man
The plot of this action film begins in 1996, with Los Angeles in a violence-crazed conflagration. One of the LAPD's most notorious cops, John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), known as the demolition man, is in hot pursuit of blonde-haired psychopath Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes), who is so nasty he even kills sometimes just because he feels cranky. John captures Simon, but not before Simon kills innocent hostages. John is blamed for the deaths of the hostages, and both he and Simon are cryogenically frozen to remove their brand of ultra-violence from a society that is simply just too violent. The film shifts to the future world of 2032, where Los Angeles has become a megalopolis called San Angeles. There is no poverty, Arnold Schwarzenegger was (at one time) president of the United States, and Taco Bell is the sole survivor of the Franchise Wars. Into this peaceful and bland society, Simon is summarily defrosted by reigning benevolent dictator Dr. Cocteau (Nigel Hawthorne) to have Simon murder Edgar Friendly (Denis Leary), the leader of a group of underground rebels. But Cocteau bites off more than he can chew when the melted-down Simon proceeds to go on a murder-and-looting spree. Reluctantly, Cocteau defrosts John to hunt down his old adversary. As John adjusts to self-driving cars and having sex wearing helmets, he pairs up with Lenina Huxley (Sandra Bullock), a bored cop with a nostalgic fascination for 20th-century culture.

Nadine Strossen, professor of law at NYU School of Law and former president of the ACLU, dispels the many misunderstandings that have clouded the perpetual debates about hate speech vs. free speech. She argues that an expansive approach to the First Amendment is most effective at promoting democracy, equality, and societal harmony and that anti-hate speech laws are not effective in reducing the feared harms, and worse yet, are likely counterproductive by giving enforcement officials the power to suppress vital expression and target minority viewpoints. The solution, maintains Strossen, instead is to promote equality and societal harmony through vibrant counterspeech. Filmed April 5, 2018
