First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park is a Montana state park in Cascade County, Montana in the United States.The park is 1,481 acres and sits at an elevation of 3,773 feet .It is located about 3.5 miles northwest of the small town of Ulm, which is near the city of Great Falls.First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park contains the Ulm Pishkun , a historic buffalo jump utilized by the Native American tribes of North America.

Kids test hunting skills at First Peoples Buffalo Jump
Kids of all ages tested their hunting skills at the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park on Sunday.
The event was part of Park's annual Mammoth Hunt, which allows people to try out weapons that date back over thousands of years.
The oldest weapon, and the most popular, is the atlatl—predating the bow and arrow. It’s a 10,000-year-old weapon.
One park ranger said these types of events are helpful to get the community learn about different cultures.
“We hold these events just to bring people out, to experience different cultures and just, you know, enjoy state parks, Alice Southworth said. Montana State Parks are the people’s parks. It’s all about getting them out and enjoying things. The more activities you have, the longer they’ll stay and enjoy themselves.
There was also tomahawk throwing and bow and arrow shooting.
First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park's next event is the Little Shell Chippewa Pow Wow on August 25.

First Peoples Buffalo Jump hosts Traditional Native Games
If you’re looking for something fun and educational to do this holiday weekend, look no further.
The First Peoples Buffalo Jump is holding its annual Traditional Native Games.
The games teach all ages how the native people hunted for buffalo and about their tribal culture, such as shinny, double ball, kickball, and run and scream.
“You have to keep the history alive, you have to keep the culture alive. Here at the park, we like to do that because this was just such a sacred place to the native people,” said Park Ranger Alice Southworth. “It states a lot of the team games now that are played by children and adults are all about fame and fortune and money. Traditional native games were much different than that, they were about working together.”
The games continue tomorrow and Monday from noon to 3 p.m at First Peoples, which is located at 342 Ulm Vaughn Road.

The Little Shell Band of Chippewa Native Americans were the historic sub-band of the Pembina Band of Chippewa Indians led by Chief Little Shell in the nineteenth century.Based in North Dakota around the Pembina River, they were part of the large Anishinaabe tribe that occupied territory west of the Great Lakes by that time.Many had partial European ancestry from intermarriage by French-Canadian fur traders and trappers.Some began to identify as Métis, today recognized as one of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.

Little Shell Tribe Celebrates Federal Recognition
With the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act into law on December 20, 2019, the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians became the 574th federally recognized Indian nation!
The Little Shell Tribe, headquartered in Montana, has been in limbo ever since failed treaty negotiations with the United States in the late 1800s.
But thanks to bipartisan support in Congress, the Little Shell Tribe joins its
rightful place among the family of Indian nations. Sen. Jon Tester (D), Sen. Steve Daines (R) and Rep. Greg Gianforte (R) helped get the federal recognition bill over the finish line in the 116th Congress.
Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana, a former Democratic candidate for president, helped out too. He issued a proclamation in the tribe’s honor and ordered the tribal flag to be raised at the State Capitol in Helena on Friday, December 20, 2019.
President Donald Trump signed S.1790, the National Defense Authorization
Act for Fiscal Year 2020, into law at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on
Friday, December 20, 2019.
