The open waters, creeks and deep channel of the Cairns Estuary System are an extremely important part of the breeding cycle of juvenile fish. This offers exceptional fishing for adult species in the Cairns area. This State Marine Park is a natural habitat to deep holes, mudflats, snags and drop-offs for a wide variety of fish species.
2. River fishing in the Mulgrave & Russell Rivers and Mutchero Inlet
Only 40 kms south of cairns, situated near Queensland highest mountain, Mount Bartle Freer, nestled amongst Russell River National Park has some of the most breath taking scenery in Far North Queensland. During May, June, July and August this can fish extremely well, with Giant Queenfish and Giant Trevally moving around the river system. Moving into September, October, November and December target species may include Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Mangrove jack, Fingermark and the famous Barramundi.
