Panorama of Calcutta (1899)
This is one of the earliest films to be shot in India - it was filmed in 1899.
The film apparently shows the Kolkata (Calcutta) ghats as seen from the perspective of a boat travelling along the Hooghly river, a tributary of the Ganges.
However, although the film's title states that this is Calcutta, the footage was in fact shot in the holy city of Varanasi (also on the Ganges). The filmmaker from the Warwick Trading Company clearly had a short memory or a limited sense of geography. (Robin Baker)
This film is included on the BFI DVD of Jean Renoir's 'The River' -
All titles on the BFI Films channel are preserved in the vast collections of the BFI National Archive. To find out more about the Archive visit

Eating the ORIGINAL Kathi Roll at Nizams + Bengali Sweets at New Market | Kolkata, India
My trip to India in November of 2018 was an experience I will never forget. This country of over a billion people is incredibly diverse when it comes to its food, culture, and languages. The food is out of this world and learning about this country’s fascinating past continues to astound me. I’m so glad I got to share my second India experience with my travel buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey!

For our second meal on our fourth and final day in Kolkata, the sixth city on our seven-city adventure, Sam and I linked back up with our friend Navpreet from Fun On Streets to visit the New Market! Come along with us as we where we visit some attractions, a legendary restaurant, try some sweets, and go shopping!
My Film Making Kit ►
Walking the streets of Kolkata is like a sensory overload. They’re packed with friendly people going about their day-to-day business and there’s always a flurry of activity around you, with mesmerizing sights and captivating aromas at every turn. It’s heaven for any curious traveler!
Our first stop was the Maghen David Synagogue, a protected monument that also happens to be one of the largest synagogues in Asia. It’s a beautiful and fascinating place that I learned a lot about!
From there, we took a fun British taxicab ride to New Market, where we stopped at the legendary Nizam’s Restaurant, which is where the Kathi Roll was invented in 1932. I couldn’t wait to try the original Kathi Roll (60 rupees each), which consists of a paratha fried in ghee with an egg, that is then filled with mutton, onion, chilies, and a squeeze of lime. The mutton was tender and delicious, the onions were nice and crunchy, and the chilies added a nice kick of heat. The paratha wasn’t to thin or thick and was covered in ghee. All of it together made this the perfect Kathi Roll!
After leaving Nizam’s, an amazing fan named Kajal joined us on our exploration of the New Market, which continued with Navpreet showing us some centuries-old embroidery shops, where we watched the embroiders do very beautiful and intricate work.
We entered the market, where there are hundreds of stalls selling jewelry, souvenirs, food, clothing, and a lot more. There, I found an incredible shop where I bought a beautiful elephant mask and five intricately-carved elephant statues, which came to $9500 rupees, or $110-$115 U.S.
Our next stop was a Jewish bakery named Nahoum & Sons, which has been around since 1910. Sam and I tried their rum ball, which is a thick, decadent ball of chocolate with rum inside. It was dense and extremely sweet and I could definitely taste the rum as well as a bit of coffee flavor! Kajal had a lemon tart, and along with the two rum balls, it came to 90 rupees, or roughly $1.15 or $1.20 U.S.
I went back to the shop to get the merchandise I bought earlier and from there, we left the market and came across a taxi that was packed with freshly-caught fish ready to be sold! It was an unbelievable sight!
And finally, we took a taxi ride (100 rupees) to the home of Mother Teresa, an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary who was born in Skopje, Macedonia, but lived most of her life helping the people of Kolkata (then known as Calcutta) who lived on the streets and were dying of hunger and sickness. Inside, you can see her tomb and the room she lived in. No photography is allowed inside except for at the tomb.
What an amazing day! I hope you enjoyed our trip to Nizams and the New Market in Kolkata! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. Also, please subscribe to my channel and click the notification bell so you don’t miss any of my upcoming food and travel content!

Crowd of people at Esplanade area, Kolkata
Flock of people walk through Esplanade, one of the busiest area of Kolkata in West Bengal, India.
Esplanade is an area in central Kolkata, earlier known as Calcutta, in the Indian state of West Bengal. This is not a conventional esplanade in the sense that the place is not exactly situated alongside a waterbody. However, the river Ganga , also known as the Ganges or the Hooghly, is located nearby. This esplanade is located in the heart of the city and is one of the busiest portions.
The Esplanade was the name given to the northern portion of jungle, which later formed the Maidan. In olden days, it stretched from Dhurmotollah (now Lenin Sarani) to Chandpal Ghat on the Hooghly River. In the days of Warren Hastings, it formed a favourite promenade for 'elegant walking parties'. The five principal streets of Kolkata abutted on it, says Sophia Goldborne, who wrote in 1780. Both Daniell and William Baillie give a picture of Esplanade as it appeared in the closing years of the eighteenth century. The old Government House and the Council House are conspicuous objects in each drawing. Danielle presents an unfamiliar addition view in the shape of two elephants with a crowd of attendants. Bourne & Shepherd, photographic studio was established here in 1867 by British photographers, Samuel Bourne and Charles Shepherd, and still exist here.

Calcutta, India
We have made our way to Calcutta, the center of all that is chaotic and crazy in the world. Every second is pure insanity, my eyes can't keep up with the movement.
A wild mixture of modern and traditional, Calcutta is perhaps the greatest location in the world for people watching. At night, when the temperatures drop, Indians and tourists take to the streets.
Strolling the filthy, steamy city, one cannot help being drawn into the manic sense of euphoria when the city comes alive. Night markets, street vendors, flashing neon signs, and hand-drawn rickshaws racing with yellow Ambassador taxis. It's like performance art on the largest scale imaginable!

Kolkata Dharmatala Travel Guide | New Market | Esplanade | Places To Visit In Kolkata
Today I will take you through the road of Kolkata Dharmatala
* Esplanade is a neighborhood of central Kolkata, in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal. This is not a conventional esplanade in the sense that the place is not exactly situated alongside a waterbody. However, the river Ganga, also known as the Ganges or the Hooghly, flows nearby.
* Dharmatala (archaic spelling Dhurrumtollah) is a neighborhood of central Kolkata, in Kolkata district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Dharmatala Street has been renamed after Lenin as Lenin Sarani but the neighbourhood upto Wellington Square continues to be referred as Dharmatala. It is a busy commercial area that had come up with the growth of Calcutta during the British Raj and is thus one of the repositories of history in the city.
* The Tipu Sultan Shahi Mosque (also known as Tipu Sultan Masjid) is a famous mosque in Kolkata, India. Located at 185 Dhartamtalla Street, the mosque is a relic of architectural and cultural heritage. Unlike the usual Islamic culture, people from all sections of society and religions are obliged to visit and take pictures of these historical premises.
* Metropolitan Building is the number 46.26 building on Chowringhee Road in Kolkata near Esplanade. Formerly known as the Whiteway Laidlaw department store, it was a famous department store in Calcutta during the British Rule in India. This neo-baroque emporium—with domes, a clock tower, and arched recessed windows—exemplifies fashionable shopping during the British Raj in British India.
* Metro Cinema or Metro Cinemas is a uniplex cinema hall and a heritage building located in Jawahar Lal Nehru Road (Esplanade), Kolkata, West Bengal, India. This theatre was opened by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1935. It is currently owned by a Mumbai-based firm and is undergoing a renovation to be converted into a multiplex theater. The building is located in the posh Esplanade area of Kolkata, right at the heart of the city. It is a heritage structure and a very famous landmark of the city of Kolkata. And one of the many famous cinema halls in the Esplanade area of Central Kolkata.
* Lighthouse Cinema was a single screen cinema hall and heritage building located in Humayun Place in New Market, next to New Empire, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
Lighthouse Cinema was established in 1934 for screening Hollywood films. The theatre was designed by W.M. Dudok. For 70 years this was one of the most popular cinemas in Kolkata. This was one of the largest cinema halls in India with 1396 sitting capacity. Later it was reduced from 1396 to 600.
* New Empire Cinema is a single screen cinema hall located in Humayun Place in New Market, (opposite Shreeram Arcade), Kolkata, West Bengal, India. This theatre is next to the Lighthouse Cinema.

Travel Guide to India l The Expeditioner
In Part One of my India travel video guide, I begin my travels in India with Calcutta (Kolkata). India had long been on my bucket list of countries to travel to in the world, and in April, 2013, I finally made it there, starting with Calcutta, with no better reason than the fact was I knew so little about that part of the country.
Calcutta was once the capital of the British Empire in India, and today it's home to over 14 million people, which means the city itself is a crowded, dense, loud, but endlessly fascinating place to explore. In this video I explore the alleyways and grand buildings that make up B.B.D. Bagh, the area where the city was founded.
After checking out a parade (a very common occurrence I was to later learn) and grabbing a roadside cup of chai, I stop at the home of famed poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian to win the Nobel Prize, and whose home is a great place to learn about Calcutta's cultural history.

In Part Two of my India travel video guide, I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha.
I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road.
I then head to the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex in the center of town. At sunset it is a scenic, peaceful time to explore the grounds, which include a large monument built at the Bodhi Tree itself, as well as a sprawling garden area where people come from around the world to meditate.

In Part Three of my India travel video guide, I travel to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in the Hindu religion. In this video I visit the famous ghats, or steps, which lead into the Ganges River, the holy river where visitors and locals come every day to wash themselves and perform religious ceremonies.
It is on the banks of the Ganges where thousands of bodies are burned every year. Having your body burned and its ashes spread here is considered to be one of the holiest places in the world to do so in the Hindu religion.
After exploring the riverfront, I stop by a local music shop to play tabla with a local sitar player. Though I was a drummer in a past life, the tabla are a completely different style of playing than I was used to -- you've been warned.
I finish up by taking a morning boat ride in the Ganges river. The colors you see on the river and on the buildings towering above are spectacular as the sun rises in the morning, and it was one of my most memorable experiences of the entire trip.

In part four of my video travel guide series to India, I travel to Darjeeling, the famed hill station known for its views and famous tea plantations. The city itself is nestled in the Himalaya mountains between Nepal and Northeast India, and is a popular place for people to stay before heading into the mountains for a trek.
In this video I visit Observatory Hill, home to the temple where it is thought Darjeeling got its name. Today there are several shrines there, thousands of prayer flags decorating the trees, and even a temple cave.
I then head to Happy Valley Tea Estate, one of the only tea plantations actually located in town, where I explore the grounds and sit down for afternoon tea with a local picker. Despite what I always assumed to be an acute sense of smell, I had difficulty picking out the better tea leaves amongst the options, but I gave it a try anyway.

In Part Five (my last) of my India travel video guide, I trek into the Himalayas along the famed Singalila Ridge, a picturesque trail that winds its way between Nepal and India, and through multiple small Himalayan villages. The highlight is the morning sunrise over the third highest mountain in the world, Mount Kanchenjunga, as well the views of Mount Everest in the far distance.
