Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail
Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail: Key West to Big Pine Key
Biking the southernmost section of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, which is also the southern terminus of the East Coast Greenway. While good segments of dedicated bike path exist along this section, few of the old bridges can be crossed, meaning portions of this 30 mile ride must be done along the bike lane or shoulder of US 1. Our end point was the Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge, which has nice large rooms and an ample campground suitable for groups.
Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail: Islamorada to Key Largo
The northernmost 30 miles of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail leads through the most populated portion of the Florida Keys, meaning much more to be attentive to for your safety. The bike path evaporated not far north of the start point at Green Turtle Hammock Preserve and didn’t return again until the northern portion of Tavernier. All of Key Largo has a bike path; I stuck with the one next to the northbound lanes of US 1. There is no marker or sign to mark the northern end of this 109-mile cycling route. I ended my ride a half mile beyond the end of the paved path at the trailhead for Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Preserve State Park.

Florida Keys: Overseas Hywy & 7 Mile Bridge Aerial
Aerial of the Florida Keys featuring the Overseas Highway and the Seven Mile Bridge. We follow the Highway 1 with aerial footage from Islamorada to Marathon Florida. The original roadway from the Mainland to Key West opened in 1928 as State Road 4A, however there was a 41 mile gap from Lower Matecumbe and No Name Keys. When the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed parts fo the Overseas Railroad, the bridges where retrofitted with concrete for vehicular traffice. In 1938 the highway opened as Route 1 and finally connected Key West with the Mainland.
The Seven Mile bridge is actually 6.79 miles and opened in 1982. The old bridge is now used for pedestrian and bicyclist traffic. In 2014 the Florida Department of Transportation approved a $77 Million plan to restore the old bridge.
We used the new X-Star Premium drone for this. We have done reviews on the picture quality which is much better than the Phantom . but this video was impressed with how it dealt with wind. At times we had very strong gusts of wind, probably about 25mph, and it the drone still remained very steady, and even against the wind was still able to maintain about 7-10mph.

Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail: Big Pine Key to Islamorada
When the winds are with you, you can fly through the middle segment of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, between Big Pine Key and Green Turtle Hammock Preserve in Islamorada. This part of the ride offers the most bridge crossings, including the famed Seven Mile Bridge, where you ride along with traffic. As we discovered by riding this on a Saturday, you must be very cautious of anglers casting off the bridges, hundreds of people using the bike path as a parking lot, and heavy traffic on the road ride segments from northern Grassy Key north. There is still a substantial amount of hurricane damage to the bike paths in this segment (wherever they are near the sea), meaning a lot of jumping off and on US 1. I stopped at the EAA Museum at the Marathon Airport for a tour of their aviation exhibits; admission is free.

The Florida Keys and the Highway that goes to the Sea
The Overseas Highway, sometimes called the Highway that Goes to Sea, is a modern wonder. It is the magic carpet by which visitors from Florida's mainland can cross countless coral and limestone islets through that special world of the Florida Keys.
The highway — the southernmost leg of U.S. 1 — follows a trail originally blazed in 1912 when Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railroad from Miami to Key West.
The highway was begun in the late 1930s & The Florida Keys — which now host more than three million visitors annually — became an easily accessible tourist destination by car and bus.
And what do these visitors see?
Key Largo
Key Largo, called the first of the Florida Keys, because of its northernmost location along the Florida Keys chain, is an hour's drive from South Florida's two major airports. Yet it is a world away.
Home to two state parks, a national park, a national marine sanctuary, Key Largo boasts some of the most fascinating botanical scenery in the state.
Also visit the 'African Queen, the boat made famous in the Humphrey Bogart film of the same name.
Islamorada
Our Village of Islands is situated between the saltwater wilderness of Everglades National Park in one direction and North America's only coral barrier reef and the deep blue waters of the Florida Straits in the other.
This might be the only place on Earth where it is possible to catch a sailfish in the morning, and then venture into the backcountry in pursuit of bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and redfish in just inches of water.
With a fleet of highly-skilled recreational fishing captains, Islamorada's reputation as The Sport Fishing Capital of the World is well earned.
Marathon
This quaint tropical city is conveniently situated in the middle of the Keys island chain.
Located mainly on Vaca, Fat Deer, and Grassy Key, Marathon is a 10- mile-long family-oriented island community rooted in a heritage of fishing, and reflects the old-Keys lifestyle that residents, snowbirds and visitors enjoy so much.
It is maintaining this simple, seafaring tradition that has made Marathon so special, celebrated through the community's annual family-friendly seafood festivals.
Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys
If you've had enough of an overcrowded and weary world, the islands of the Lower Keys are the place for you.
Here, you can snorkel or dive over the Looe Key coral reef, ride a bicycle through Key Deer country, or take a fishing adventure in the back country or troll the deep blue waters beyond the reef.
At the end of the day, you can trade stories with family and friends at one of this area's tiki bars, RV parks, campgrounds, quaint resorts or licensed vacation homes. The Earthy fragrance of mangrove forests and wetlands is never far away.
Key West
Discover a city where real estate titles date back to the Kings of Spain.
Stroll the palm-lined streets and discover gingerbread mansions, tin-roofed conch houses, the John Audubon House and Ernest Hemingway's home.
Walk in the footsteps of Thomas Edison, Lou Gehrig, Harry Truman, and Tennessee Williams.

Tour de Conch 2: Channel 5 Bridge - Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Bike Ride
Crossing the Channel 5 bridge in the Florida Keys on my bike, March 2012. If you notice that I said there is no pedestrian bridge but you see one in the video - I misspoke. The pedestrian bridge (an old, historic bridge that is open for pedestrians and fishing but closed to vehicles) does not go all the way across the channel. There is a gap in the middle of it. Notice how much higher the new bridge is than the old one. I suppose that is to let tall sail boats pass under it.

Florida Keys Bull Shark fishing (under full moon) Heritage Trail & old Henry Flagler Railroad bridge
Bull Shark fishing under a full moon near Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail and the Bahia Honda bridge between Bahia Honda State Park and Spanish Harbor.
I had only planned to film a dusk painted full moon over a very famous scenic spot here in the Florida Keys and then I was going to be on my way. I did not plan on filming anything after dusk, as even under a full moon (one without black cloud cover), I still wouldn’t expect to get great footage without some kind of camera lighting set up. This said, suffice it to say I just don’t film at night, except on very rare occasions. This particular night, unexpectedly, ended up being one of those rare occasions.
I decided to stick around past dusk in hopes that the January full moon would come out from behind thick black cloud cover long enough for me to get some decent footage. In so doing, I came across the gentleman in the video who just happened to hook a “big one” while I was lingering. “Hmmm”… I thought. ...in spite of the low light, this might make some interesting video. So I decided to stick around and film, what we later realized, was about a 4-5 foot bull shark. I know. My filming is quite amateur and the dark lighting doesn’t help; however, for some of you more forgiving souls out there, you may enjoy the footage.
RE THE LOCATION -- THE HERITAGE TRAIL AND THE OLD HENRY FLAGLER RAILROAD BRIDGE:
While the railroad is long gone, the Florida Keys have been left a gift of 23 historic bridges, all at or approaching 100 years old. These are the centerpiece of the Overseas Heritage Trail, making it unlike any other trail in the country. All of these engineering marvels have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Depicted in this video is the bridge located at the one-mile crossing between Bahia Honda Key and the Spanish Harbor Keys which had the deepest water (over 30 feet) and the strongest current along the route. While this difficult point was almost declared the “end of the line,” the engineers settled on using very tall cement piers topped off with trusses. By using trusses instead of deck plates they were able to reduce the number of pilings from 64 to 34.
Today the Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Greenways and Trails is in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Monroe County to build a 106-mile multi-use trail from Key Largo to Key West. Built on the foundation of the Overseas Railroad, this new trail will be an alternative transportation route for locals and visitors alike who enjoy biking, hiking, paddling and fishing. The mission of the OGT is to not only maintain the historic bridges but also to interpret the era in which this amazing “folly” turned “wonder of the world” was built.
Visit the trail’s site or call the Office of Greenways & Trails in Key Largo at 305-853-3571.

End Point at Southernmost Point in USA:
Key West (Spanish: Cayo Hueso) is an island and city in the Straits of Florida on the North American continent. The city lies at the southernmost end of U.S. Route 1, the longest north-south road in the United States. Key West is the southernmost city in the contiguous United States and the westernmost island connected by highway in the Florida Keys. The island is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, with a total land mass of 4.2 square miles (11 km2). Duval Street, its main street, is 1.1 miles (1.8 km) in length in its 14-block-long crossing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Straits of Florida and the Atlantic Ocean. Key West is about 95 miles (153 km) north of Cuba at their closest points.
The city is the county seat of Monroe County. The city boundaries include the island of Key West and all or part of several nearby islands: Sigsbee Park, Fleming Key, Sunset Key, and the northern part of Stock Island. The total land area of the city is 5.6 square miles (14.5 km2). Naval Air Station Key West is an important year round training site for naval aviation due to the tropical weather, which is also the reason Key West was chosen as the Winter White House of President Harry S. Truman. The central business district is located along Duval Street and includes much of the northwestern corner of the island. The official city motto is One Human Family.
