Florida State University (commonly referred to as Florida State or FSU) is an American public space-grant and sea-grant research university. Its primary campus is located on a 1,391.54-acre (5.631 km2) campus in Tallahassee, Florida, United States. It is a senior member of the State University System of Florida. Founded in 1851, it is located on the oldest continuous site of higher education in the state of Florida.[2][11]
The university is classified as a Research University with Very High Research by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.[12] The university comprises 16 separate colleges and more than 110 centers, facilities, labs and institutes that offer more than 360 programs of study, including professional school programs.[13] The university has an annual budget of over $1.7 billion and an annual economic impact of over $10 billion.[14][15] Florida State is home to Florida's only National Laboratory – the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and is the birthplace of the commercially viable anti-cancer drug Taxol. Edmund Lewandowski was born in Milwaukee in 1914 and attended the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee from 1931 to 1934. Following graduation, he assumed a teaching position in public school as a means of support though he pursued painting on his own and commercial commissions in advertising and with magazines. In 1936, Edith Halpert, an important New York art dealer of modern art, invited him to join her gallery, the noted Downtown Gallery. That year, he also began painting murals for the Federal Art Project, and during 1939 and 1940, he executed post office murals in Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. From 1942 to 1946, Lewandowski made maps and concealments while serving in the United States Air Force. In 1947, he went back to the Layton School of Art where he was appointed to the faculty, but he also continued to do commercial work. In 1949, he moved to a teaching position at Florida State University, in Tallahassee, where he remained until 1954. Following his tenure in Florida, he returned to the Layton School of Art, where he served as Director until 1972. His final position was as chairman of the art department at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he served from 1973 to 1984 before he retired and was named professor emeritus. He died in Rock Hill in 1998. Lewandowski is recalled by students at Winthrop and members of the Rock Hill community for his teaching, service to the community and his exceptional artwork. Florida State University’s School of Dance and Department of Art History are delighted to announce the premiere exhibition of Threads: The Quilts of Ms. Gussie Beatrice Arnold Hill, September 9 – October 3, 2014 at FSU’s William Johnston Gallery, 143 Honors Way, Tallahassee, FL 32306. Conceived and developed by School of Dance Associate Professor Anjali Austin, the exhibit highlights quilts designed and crafted by her maternal grandmother, and Tallahassee native, Ms. Gussie Beatrice Arnold Hill.
Being of African-American, Seminole and Spanish lineage, and a fifth generation Tallahasseean, Austin feels the quilts evoke and capture her Florida heritage and a history often left untold. Austin states, “In my heart I believe these quilts to be an important anthology of art. To have a collection of this size and nature from an African-American artist of Ms. Hill’s genre is rare and significant. It is an opportunity to recognize a rich legacy and explore one family’s historical journey.”
On exhibit are eleven of Ms. Hill’s quilts and photographs of her more delicate pieces from the collection. Mattie Codling, Florida State University Department of Art graduate student and curator for the exhibit states, “It has been a great privilege to work with the quilts of Ms. Hill and the creative vision of Anjali Austin. The exhibit is unique as it brings recognition to a previously unknown artist, but also challenges the viewer to consider their own family’s ‘threads’.” This is the first time Ms. Hill’s quilts are being made available to the public and, for Austin, it is a responsibility. In her words, “This is a tribute to and celebration of my ancestors. My life is what it is today because of their incredible strength and unwavering resilience.”
Threads opens September 9th at 5:00 pm. Admission is free. For gallery hours contact FSU’s Department of Art at (850) 644.1250. Tallahassee () is the capital city of the U.S. state of Florida. It is the county seat and only incorporated municipality in Leon County. Tallahassee became the capital of Florida, then the Florida Territory, in 1824. In 2017, the population was 191,049, making it the 7th-largest city in the U.S state of Florida, and the 126th-largest city in the United States. The population of the Tallahassee metropolitan area was 382,627 as of 2017. Tallahassee is the largest city in the Florida Panhandle region, and the main center for trade and agriculture in the Florida Big Bend and Southwest Georgia regions.
Tallahassee is home to Florida State University, ranked the nation's twenty-sixth best public university by U.S. News & World Report. It is also home to Florida A&M University, the fifth-largest historically black university by total enrollment. Tallahassee Community College is a large state college that serves mainly as a feeder school to Florida State and Florida A&M. Tallahassee qualifies as a significant college town, with a student population exceeding 70,000.As the capital, Tallahassee is the site of the Florida State Capitol, Supreme Court of Florida, Florida Governor's Mansion, and nearly 30 state agency headquarters. The city is also known for its large number of law firms, lobbying organizations, trade associations and professional associations, including the Florida Bar and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. It is a recognized regional center for scientific research, and home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. In 2015, Tallahassee was awarded the All-American City Award by the National Civic League for the second time.
