Harpeth River & Kingston Springs, TN Drone Footage
A view from the air of the Harpeth River near Burns Park in Kingston Springs, taken from my Phantom 3 drone. The Highway 70 Harpeth River Bridge in Shacklett can be seen off in the distance around the 1:40 mark. If you look closely at 2:58, you can see a lone CSX locomotive going through downtown headed west. (Please note, at no time did I fly over any homes, people, or roads, as per FAA Drone Laws.)
Recorded on July 23, 2017.
The song is Acoustic Arrangement of Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country by Fred Baty. Here is the link to the song -

When The River Roared
During the recent thousand year flood in Middle Tennessee, many residents found themselves cut off from the outside world. For those able to get out, too many found they had no homes to return to.
I am one of the lucky ones whose house was on high ground and experienced no significant damage. But for several days, dozens of residents in my rural neighborhood near the Narrows Of The Harpeth State Park were on our own little island. There were three ways in and out of our neighborhood and all were impassable. The Harpeth River in our area is normally a slow moving, peaceful river that is shallow enough in spots that summer canoeists have to walk their canoes over sandbars. In my immediate area, The Narrows of the Harpeth is a well-maintained state park that had canoe ramps, river access roads and a series of wooden steps leading to the first man-made tunnel in the United States. All were destroyed. I don't think anyone who knows this area ever imagined in their wildest dreams that such a peaceful little river could rise up to the levels it did and cause so much devastation. It is no exaggeration to say that during the flood of 2010, this river truly did roar.
As a television producer with a background in news and production, I was torn between feeling like I should document what was happening with a strong desire to not be exploitative of other people's losses. So, I decided to tell the only story I could reliably talk about. My own.
As such, this little film makes no attempt to be a comprehensive look at an epic natural disaster. Rather, it is one person's look at one rural neighborhood in one part of a very large affected region. Looking back, I see in my own accounts where emotion got the best of me and I mistakenly referred to the bridge at times when I meant the road to the bridge. (I always just refer to that whole stretch of road and bridge going over the river as the bridge.) But I think it's important to show those things, warts and all, because this really is an in the moment account. I'm not sure much other footage exists, if any, of this particular location during the flood so I think it has value for that reason if nothing else.
Everyone I know in Nashville knows someone who lost everything they own. But how the entire Middle Tennessee region has responded to this disaster is truly inspirational. I witnessed and documented one such example which is found at the end of this film.
I will always be grateful to my country neighbors and the residents of the Leatherwood / Cedar Hill Road community for their determination to help each other and literally rise above whatever nature threw at us. It has always been a privilege to live in such a historically significant and naturally beautiful part of the country. Now, after the flood, I consider myself even luckier.
