Messina: Fontana di Orione (Montorsoli 1507- 1563) by LuLoCa

Polidoro Caldara. The legendary '500 of Messina. by LuLoCa
Polidoro Caldara da Caravaggio was an Italian painter and illustrator living in the first half of the sixteenth century. Born in Lombardy, Caravaggio, he spent the last 14 years of his life in Messina, Sicily.
It was a well-known artist in his day. Polidoro Caldara was the school of Raphael, with a strong classical tone. It was probably this immoderate passion towards Greek culture led him to settle in Messina, where, contrary to what was happening on the peninsula, is living a moment of political stability and great economic prosperity. In Messina, there was also the possibility of entering into a cultural environment of the first floor, with a European, led by intellectuals such as the famous Abbot mathematician, astronomer, architect, historian and scientist Francis Maurolico, profound knowledge of classical culture. In Messina, at the time, was developing the noble classical style which then led Montorsoli, at the end of the century, to produce works such as the fountain of Orion, considered the finest of sculptures of Europe's 500.
Polidoro Caldara was a very prolific artist: especially with the drawings and inks. He drew constantly, often without any commission, just for the fun of it. In Messina, until the seventeenth century there were large collections of his drawings, like those belonging to the family Ruffo and the seventeenth-century painter Agostino Scilla. Today almost nothing remains. Fortunately, the engravers of the '600, impressed with his skill, have them copied and stracopiati, causing them to circulate in large numbers and in every part of Europe. What you see are in fact recordings of 600, made on a form of drawings by Polidoro no longer extant, preserved at the museum in Rotterdam Beninghen Bonemahn shan.

To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, fo Siciliy is the clue to everything Johann Woflgang von Goethe
Messina is Sicily's panoramic gateway — located on the northeastern corner of the island, the city just kisses the boot of mainland Italy's southern tip. Get lost among the patchwork of churches and antique palaces. The Messina Cathedral is in the heart of the city, and its famous bell tower houses the largest mechanical clock in the world — every day at noon, the statues move to Schubert's Ave Maria. In front of this church, you'll find the Fontana di Orione, a 16th-century fountain that's a work of art in itself, with sculptures of figures from ancient mythology. Cruise to Sicily and take a leisurely walk to the Sacrario di Cristo Re, a hilltop church with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains.
MESSINA is the capital of the Italian Metropolitan City of Messina. It is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, and the 13th largest city in Italy, with a population of more than 238,000[7] inhabitants in the city proper and about 650,000 in the Metropolitan City. It is located near the northeast corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, opposite Villa San Giovanni on the mainland, and has close ties with Reggio Calabria.

Messina is a harbor city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.
But its location as the gateway to Sicily has also meant that tourists tend to hurry through it on their way to the many other attractions of the island. Messina deserves a place on any Sicilian itinerary for its many things to see and do and for a chance to meet its upbeat, friendly inhabitants, perhaps during one of the lively festivals that fill its streets with music and color. The most colorful of these is Vara, each August 15, when a 15-meter-tall statue of the Madonna weighing nearly eight tons is carried in procession through the streets.
The cathedral forms one end of the wide Piazza del Duomo, Messina's historic center, and in front of it is the Orion fountain, created from 1547 to 1551 by G.A. Montorsoli from Florence, a student of Michelangelo. On the left long side of the cathedral stands the Baroque column of the Virgin Mary by Giuseppe Buceti, erected in 1758. The church was built in the 1100s by the Normans, who ruled Sicily at the time, but it was seriously damaged by an earthquake that devastated much of Messina in 1908. Barely recovered from that, the cathedral was again severely damaged by World War II bombing. Following both, the reconstruction remained true to the original form and retained important later features such as the carved stone portals from the late Gothic period, medieval relief carvings on the lower facade, and three apses on the east side that date from its founding.
The 60-meter high bell-tower, reconstructed using old designs, contains one of the greatest of all astronomical clocks, a work by the Strasbourg firm of Ungerer placed there in 1933. Every day at noon (or sometimes shortly after) the figures begin moving and show scenes from the history of Messina, including the handing-over of the legendary letter of protection from the Madonna to Messina.
The second most important church in Messina is the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani. It is the only building to have survived the earthquake of 1908, but was not so fortunate in the World War II bombing. The church was built in the second half of the 12th century under Norman rule, and the east side dates from this time. Each of the three sections of Messina's Regional Museum - the painting gallery, sculpture collection, and archeological section -- contains significant pieces. Sculpture highlights include an Antonello Gagini sculpture of St. Antonius, Francesco Laurana's Madonna with Child, and Goro di Gregorio's Madonna of the Cripples, as well as the originals of the figures on the Fountain of Neptune.
The Fontana del Nettuno, or Neptune Fountain, is located in a park, set apart from the city center. It was built in 1557 and, like the Orion fountain, is a work of Montorsoli. The fountain shows the god of the sea caught between Scylla and Charybdis, the two monsters of the Strait of Messina. On the west side of the Piazza Dante is the Camposanto, or Cimitero Monumentale, one of Italy's largest and most beautiful cemeteries. On top of the hill is an Ionic colonnade, the Pantheon of the town's leading citizens, from which there are fine views of the city and the strait. The Neoclassical and Art Nouveau sculptures and monuments set in gardens make it seem more like an open air art gallery.
An attractive panoramic route, Viale Italia, begins to the west of the university and continues westwards under varying names (Viale Principe Umberto, Viale Regina Margherita). A promontory juts out from the west of Messina into the harbor with the remains of a citadel called the Fort of San Salvatore, which was built in 1681. It forms the base for a 60-meter octagonal column erected in 1934, topped by a statue of the Madonna della Lettera.

Messina: Santa Maria Alemanna. By LuLoCa
By LuLoCa
