Culinary Experience in Livorno, Italy Complete With Locally Sourced Feast
In the port city of Livorno, host Pete Evans is joined by two chef-authors with U.S. roots: Bryan Voltaggio, who visits from Maryland, and Pamela Sheldon Johns, who has called Tuscany home for more than 20 years. Seasonal, local, and traditional flavors have inspired this seaside episode of Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking; first, Pete visits Prosciutto di Parma to learn about this geographically protected delicacy. Then he meets up with Bryan and Pamela to tour the city’s Venetian-style canals and browse the 19th-century style Mercato Centrale for local produce. From the regional classic cacciucco, a tomato-based seafood stew, to a flavorful bordadito, a polenta and bean crostini, this feast embodies the spirit of Livorno in its unpretentious character and coastal integrity.

In a well-organized day you can tour from a hotel in Livorno you might sample Chianti-side, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Siena and Volterra and be back for dinner. However, return before by expected time for a cruise ship departure could be quite problematic.

Livorno is an important cruise port on the Italian west coast. It is the gateway to Tuscany. From Livorno it is only halv an hour drive to Pisa and about 80 minutes to Florence. But Livorno itself is also worth visiting.

The food market , also called the Central Market or covered , rises on the Aurelio Saffi , along the Fosso Reale of Livorno. It is one of the most interesting buildings of Livorno in the second half of the nineteenth century , where there is also the influence of the great architecture of iron and nineteenth-century glass .
In Italy, the post-unification years were characterized by a campaign for the reorganization of services that also invested Livorno. Here, after a first reconversion of buildings acquired in the state property, a greater commitment was made only at the end of the nineteenth century , when, thanks to the urging of the mayor Nicola Costella , important public works were realized: among these, the most impressive and demanding it certainly turned out to be the market for food items, designed by Angiolo Badaloni .
The area chosen for the construction was inserted in the city center, along the Fosso Reale , in the area once occupied by the complex fortified Medici system and later by an arena for daytime shows. The works began in 1889 - 1890 and ended rapidly in 1894 ; at the time, however, there were criticisms related to the vastness and the cost (about 4 million Lire ) of the work.
It is worth remembering that, according to the stories of the Filippello painter Filippelli, around 1909 the famous Amedeo Modigliani, returning from Paris , rented a large room on the upper floors of the market for the food store, corner Via Gherardo del Testa. make sculpture, making some heads. On his return to France, it is said that these works were thrown into the Fosso Reale ; ditch that, in 1984 , was the scene of the famous discovery of some fake heads, made by some young Leghorns.
The facade main, large well 95 meters, is characterized by two orders of windows to all sixth that guarantee the maximum brightness of the building, while the entrance is emphasized by four columns that support a marked entablature . On the other hand, the minor and the rear elevations present a simplification of the decorative apparatus, even though they repropose the theme of the large window openings.

Video notes:
First you have to buy a train ticket. It is super easy. You don’t need to buy the tickets in advance. Find a ticket machine, press the language you need, then select buy your train ticket. One thing to keep in mind is that the names of the city are written in Italian. For example, Florence is Firenze. Next, pick the date and the time. The cost is 8.40 euros each trip. There’s no assigned seats so get there early to get seats.
The train doors don’t open for you. You have to press the button to get inside the train.
We are here in Pisa! It is a 20 minutes walk from the train station to the Square of Miracles where the Leaning Tower is of Pisa is located.
Buy the tickets to the Leaning Tower in advance on the actual website. You can buy the tickets 20 days before the day you’re visiting and up to 1 day in advance. Watch out for third party websites that try to rip you off by charging you double the cost. If you just want to climb up the tower, it is only 18 euros. Other websites will try to charge you up to 38 dollars for the same ticket.
Your ticket comes with free entrance to the Cathedral. Don’t forget to take advantage of that!
You can’t bring purses or backpacks into the tower. Don’t worry, they will keep your stuff in a locker for free.
Ever wonder why this tower leans? “Pisa” comes from the Greek word for “marshy land.” You would think the architects would have taken the subsoil into account while building a very tall bell tower, Nope! The foundation of the build is shallow and heavy. By the time they built the 2nd story the tower began to sink to one side. They tired to fix their mistake by building taller columns, but that did not help the poor tower.
At the very top you can walk a circle around the bell tower. You can take your time taking in the view of the city. They say you only have 30 minutes up there but nobody is really there to throw you out when your time is up. I was up there for well over 30 minutes. I am actually amazed how they are able to manage the crowds at each place we’ve been to. Limiting the amount of people at the entrance definitely made the visit very peaceful.
If you want to get a picture of the city with the leaning tower, then pay 5 euros to get in and see the view from the top of the Baptistery
With your tickets to the tower you can visit the cathedral for free. You can get a fixed time ticket for free to get in. I went in just fine without getting one. I guess it would depend on which days you are going and if there is an event going on. Check on their website to make sure there isn’t an event during the day you are visiting.
Alongside the Arno river is the Santa Maria della Spina church. It is free to visit. It’s a nice short stop. Della Spina translation is “of the thorn.” This represents the thorn placed on christ during his Passion and crucifixion. It was originally named Santa Maris di Pontenovo after a bridge that was nearby but it collapsed in the 15th century and was never rebuilt.

Livorno is an Italian port city on the west coast of Tuscany. It's known for its seafood, Renaissance-era fortifications and modern harbor with a cruise ship port. Its central Terrazza Mascagni, a waterside promenade with checkerboard paving, is the city's main gathering place. The bastions of the 16th-century Fortezza Vecchia face the harbor and open onto Livorno's canal-laced Venezia Nuova quarter.
Tuscany's third-largest city is a quintessential port town with a colourful history and cosmopolitan heritage. Declared a free port in the 17th century, Livorno (Leghorn in English) attracted traders from across the globe, who brought with them new customs and habits, exotic goods, slaves and foreign forms of worship. The result was a city famed throughout Europe for its multiculturalism. Today its seafood is the best on the Tyrrhenian coast, its shabby historic quarter threaded with Venetian-style canals is full of character, and its elegant belle époque buildings offer evocative reminders of a prosperous past. An easy train trip from Florence, Pisa and Rome, it makes an understated but undeniably worthwhile stop on any Tuscan itinerary.
Livorno is a charming city located on the Western coast of Tuscany, on the Ligurian Sea and is considered one of the most important port of Italy. Don't expect to visit a quaint medieval town like many others in the region, since Livorno is one of the most modern cities in Tuscany, even if there are many archaeological remains that fortunately have not been destroyed during the World War II.
Like every port city, Livorno has always been a crossroads and melting pot of the world's cultures and owes its fascinating charm to this multiethnic aspect. Its origins date back maybe to prehistoric times, while many Etruscan and Roman remains have been found all closeby; during the XVIth century, the Medici Family contributed in the development of the city and its sea port, charging the renowed artist Buontalenti with the construction of a new fortified city with fosses and bastions, that gave Livorno those aspect that we can see today.
At the end of the XVIth century, Livorno began to house a large Jewish community - of traders principally - that grew more and more till it began one of the most important of Italy; today, you can visit the Synagogue (actually, you need to schedule your appointment to go inside), an impressive religious builiding that stands out from the traditional Italian architecture.
One of the most enchanting quarters of the city is La Venezia, a Venezia- style quarter with canals (dating back to the Medici era) crossing the all district, small bridges and boats that reminds one of the city in Northern Italy. It is situated in the historical center near the New Fortress and every Summer - usually on early August - houses one of the most important Summer events of the region, the Effetto Venezia. Music, theatre and cultural performances, food and entertainment for both children and adults give a special touch to the quarter that come alive until late night for a few days.
If you visit Livorno with kids, one of the attractions you should see is the Aquarium, with colorful fishes, turtles and many others: a funny break from the city seightseeings that your kids will surely appreciate. But one of most suggestive places is the Terrazza Mascagni, a great chessboard-style terrace made of many white and black tiles located along Viale Italia, separated from the sea by an elegant parapet with columns. The ideal venue for a romantic evening!
If you head to this Tuscan port city, you must try out its great seafood, there are many restaurants both in the historical center and along the lungomare that stretches south to the city, where rocks make space for a bit of beaches. Especially there, you'll find many nice and delicious places to eat at, which are informal and familiar and, above all, have reasonable prices.
