Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Abandoned Ship In Wisconsin
This beautiful and abandoned Ghost ship named the L. Wade Childress has been abandoned on dry
land in prairie du chien Wisconsin for about 33 years now. She sank in 1985, was recovered, and has been sitting in the same spot ever since. In this video, me and my buddy Gabe drive 5 and a half hours just to explore this decaying ship. This is the most amazing place as an urban explorer I have ever been to in my life.
Who gets the chance to explore a big abandoned ship?! At first we didn't find much at this place, but as we dug deeper, their was so much beauty and antiques to offer.
I would also like to note: At any abandoned place I go to, my number 1 rule is to never take or break things. I leave everything the way it was for other future explorers to enjoy.

Digging graves during a Wisconsin winter is already difficult. And this winter has been especially brutal - but not impossible - for cemetery grounds keepers in the Milwaukee area.
With the snow blowing and cutting frost you're adding at least an hour extra time if not two hours extra time to digging a grave during the wintertime, says Kerry Carlton, superintendent of grounds at Highland Memorial Park in New Berlin, Wis.
They use what they call frost teeth that attach to the backhoe's bucket to cut through the frozen, frosty ground to help break it up. Carlton says usually the ground starts thawing at the end of January, but they are still using the frost teeth in March this year.
Since we started using the frost tooth we've had to use it on almost every grave, he said.
It started cold in November and it just, it never let up, said Carlton.
Over at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Wauwatosa, they use a jackhammer to break up the ground. And they've had to use it longer than normal this year.
It does feel like it's gone on for too long at this point, said Luke Buelow, gounds technician at Pinelawn.
This year has been the worst that I've seen, he said.
The cemetery grounds crews, as well as everyone else, are more than ready for spring.

Billy Mitchell
William Billy Mitchell was a United States Army general who is regarded as the father of the United States Air Force.
Mitchell served in France during World War I and, by the conflict's end, commanded all American air combat units in that country. After the war, he was appointed deputy director of the Air Service and began advocating increased investment in air power, believing that this would prove vital in future wars. He argued particularly for the ability of bombers to sink battleships and organized a series of bombing runs against stationary ships designed to test the idea.
