Fort Buenaventura Campground in Ogden Utah provides mostly primitive (a few electric hookups are available) tent and RV camping sites on the grounds of the historic fort along the Weber River. A county managed park the sites are available on a first come first served basis. Situated in a wooded setting the sites are best suited to smaller RVs and tent campers (mostly tent sites). Access to trails, the historic fort and the river are available. Paved roads, dirt site pads and concrete patios with picnic tables and fire rings.
The entrance into the park is via a steep dip; use caution.

Fort Buenaventura, located in west Ogden, Utah, United States, was the first permanent Anglo settlement in the Great Basin. It was founded in 1846 just east of the Weber River, west of current downtown Ogden, Utah. The fort and the surrounding land were bought by the Mormon settlers in 1847 and renamed Brownsville (then later Ogden). The land on which the actual fort stood is now a Weber County park.

Our mission statement ”We endeavor to learn, through study and experimentation, the history and skills of the individuals that occupied North America prior to 1840, emulate their way of life through the many different personas that existed in these time periods and share that knowledge with all interested parties. We hope in some small way to honor the many people that occupied these lands before us and remember their customs, hard work and sacrifice that has been the foundation of our nation and way of life.”
In that spirit we dedicate and meet for one whole day each and every month to share our knowledge with all present in each of the following areas; knots, history, trapping skills, (steel traps, primitive traps), primitive cooking skills, hides and furs, clothing and footwear (time period, materials, styles), hand tools and proper usage, weapons (rifle, smoothbore, archery, knife and hawk) fire (starting methods, fuel, styles), shelters (types, materials), music (jaw harp, strings, drums, flute), games and candy cannon, sign language, aboriginal skills, (pottery, knapping, cordage).
All are invited to find their favorite skills and participate with “hands on” learning while we talk, laugh and do around our fire. We share a potluck picnic amidst our other activities. Black powder and archery shoots are organized for all that are interested. We have games for young and old alike.
Whether you’re curious or want to join in the festivities, all are welcome. Check out the date, place, time and skills agenda for our next meeting. We’ve got a spot for you by the fire but bring your own mug! Hope to see you there!
Riding Through Ogden City In Utah
Originally named Fort Buenaventura, the city of Ogden was the first permanent settlement by people of European descent in the region that is now Utah. It was established by the trapper Miles Goodyear in 1846 about a mile west of where downtown Ogden is currently located. In November 1847 all of the land now comprising Weber County together with some livestock and Fort Buenaventura was purchased by Captain James Brown for $3,000. The land was conveyed to Captain Brown in a Mexican Land Grant, this area being at that time a part of Mexico.
The settlement was then called Brownsville, after Captain James Brown, but was later named Ogden for a brigade leader of the Hudson's Bay Company, Peter Skene Ogden, who had trapped in the Weber Valley a generation earlier. There is some confusion in which Ogden was the first to set foot in the Utah city. Peter's older brother Samuel Ogden traveled though the western United States on an exploration trip in 1818. The site of the original Fort Buenaventura is now a Weber County park.
Ogden is the closest sizable city to the Golden Spike location at Promontory Summit, Utah, where the First Transcontinental Railroad was joined in 1869. Ogden was known as a major passenger railroad junction owing to its location along major east–west and north–south routes, prompting the local chamber of commerce to adopt the motto, You can't get anywhere without coming to Ogden. Railroad passengers traveling west to San Francisco from the eastern United States typically passed through Ogden (and not through the larger Salt Lake City to the south). Ogden, however, is no longer served by Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, and passengers desiring to travel from Ogden by rail must travel via Front Runner commuter rail to Salt Lake City and Provo. Because Ogden has historically been the second largest city in Utah, it is home to a large number of historic buildings. However, by the 1980s, several Salt Lake City suburbs and Provo had surpassed Ogden in population.
The Defense Depot Ogden Utah operated in Ogden from 1941 to 1997. Some of its 1,128 acres has since been converted into a commercial and industrial park called the Business Depot Ogden.

Fort Beunaventura in Ogden, Utah was the site for the 2nd race in the Utah Cyclocross series. It was not quiet as warm as the Snowbird race but the day was still perfect for fair weather racers.
