My Choice - Mgarr & Ghajnsielem, Gozo: Vieni Sul Mar-Unfinished Symphony
A tour of Mgarr Harbour and nearby Ghajnsielem in the beautiful island of Gozo, Malta.
To compliment our tour we're featuring and old Italian song, Vieni Sul Mar played by my German friend, youtube ID Georgswa02 and the beautiful Unfinished Symphony number 9 by Franz Schubert.
The village of Mġarr grew up around the shallow harbour which shares its name. Ferry services to Malta were in operation by 1241, and fishing was already established. While the area around the harbour was developed over the following centuries, there was little development of the harbour itself until 1841, when a breakwater was constructed to provide more shelter to the port. This breakwater was extended a few times till they build the existing one in 1935.
Mġarr is the largest fishing village on Gozo. In addition to the ferry terminal, a yacht marina is also located in the this village.
Mġarr is overlooked by Fort Chambray, constructed in 1749 by the Knights of St. John.
Our second destination is Għajnsielem, meaning Peaceful Spring, is a municipality on the southeastern coast of the island of Gozo inMalta, including the entire island of Comino. It has a population of 3,300 residents and is the first Gozitan village that greets the visitor on leaving Mġarr Harbour towards the Gozitan heartland. Its name originated from the water spring, around which in 1700, Grandmaster Perellos built an arcade containing public washbasins and fresh water spouts. Attractions include Lourdes Chapel with its sharp steeple and underlying niche of Our Lady of Lourdes, Fort Chambray and the tower of Ghajnsielem Parish Church.
