Ferry to Fort Jefferson - Dry Tortugas National Park - Key West, Florida
By far the most amazing adventure we did in Key West was taking the Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry, the Yankee Freedom III, to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas National Park. After a somewhat rocky 2 1/2 hour boat ride we were able to explore the third largest fort in the USA, the kids got their junior ranger badges, and we snorkeled as a family for the very first time. We were blown away with how awesome the ferry service was. From start to finish, the staff was exceptional. Not only did they feed us two meals, but they provided everything we needed (and took exceptional care of those that were motion sick). We would highly recommend this adventure for other families looking to get to a more remote location! If we get the chance to go again we would definitely choose to pay the small fee to camp for several nights on the island.

Snorkeling Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas National Park
This is a short compilation video of our snorkeling adventure around Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida Keys. This was one of the most rewarding free range snorkeling locations we have had. Take a 2.5hr ferry ride from Key West, Florida or 30min sea plane to get to this isolated island. This was a fairly easy swim for novices, however there are 2 sets of coal pilings nearby that you are able to snorkel around that require more experience. I hope this video helps you in your future vacation planning.

Fort Jefferson/Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida Keys
Dry Tortugas National Park is a remote national park in Florida, consisting of a cluster of coral islands that make up the westernmost of Florida's keys (they're about 70 miles west of Key West).
The seven major islands and surrounding water feature an important tropical ecosystem that draws snorkelers, bird watchers, scuba divers and fishermen, who reach the park by boat or seaplane.
For history buffs, Dry Tortugas's Garden Key is home to Fort Jefferson, one of several forts that a young United States built along its east coast. Construction of the fort began in 1846, and the resulting six-sided fort surrounding a 13-acre parade ground would become the largest brick masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere - more than 16 million bricks were used in its construction.
Fort Jefferson remained in Union hands during the civil war, during which it was generally used as a military prison. In 1865, Samuel Mudd, Edmund Spangler, Samuel Arnold and Michael O'Laughlen were imprisoned here after they were convicted of conspiracy in President Lincoln's assassination.
By the end of the 1800s it had been all but abandoned, but it was brought back into use in 1898 during the war with Spain. The USS Maine loaded up on coal at Fort Jefferson before making its way to Havana, where it blew up and sank, eventually pulling the US into war with Spain.
The park was established as a national monument in 1935 and as a national park in 1992.

The Dry Tortugas are a small group of islands, located in the Gulf of Mexico at the end of the Florida Keys, United States, about 67 miles (108 km) west of Key West, and 37 miles (60 km) west of the Marquesas Keys, the closest islands. Still further west is the Tortugas Bank, which is submerged. The first Europeans to discover the islands were the Spanish in 1513, led by explorer Juan Ponce de León. They are an unincorporated area of Monroe County, Florida, and belong to the Lower Keys Census County Division. With their surrounding waters, they constitute the Dry Tortugas National Park.
Exploring the Florida Keys | Dry Tortugas National Park | Fort Jefferson
This week we stayed at Bahia Honda State Park and had an amazing site, right on the water. We had to book 11 months in advance, but it was totally worth it! We played tourists in Key West and visited the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary. We also took the ferry out to Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park (our 10th!), which had the most gorgeous crystal clear water we've ever seen. The weather didn't quite cooperate with us, so we will definitely have to come back!

Fort Jefferson | Dry Tortugas Islands of Florida, USA
Fort Jefferson | Dry Tortugas Islands of Florida, USA
Fort Jefferson is one of the central features of the seven small Dry Tortugas Islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Fort Jefferson constructed between 1845 and 1876, Fort Jefferson named after the third President Thomas Jefferson, and Fort Jefferson is a 19th-century third system coastal fortification that occupies the majority of Garden Key in the remote Dry Tortugas National Park in the Florida Keys. Nearly thirty years in the making, Fort Jefferson was never finished nor fully armed. The largest masonry structure in the Americas, and it is made-up of over 16 million bricks. The design called for a four-tiered six-sided 1000 heavy-gun fort, with two sides measuring 415 feet, and four sides measuring 564 feet. It was named Dry Tortugas because there is no fresh water. The fort is located on Bush Key later called Garden Key in the lower Florida Keys within the Dry Tortugas National Park. In 1825 Spain sold these Islands to United States for $5 million.
After the Civil War, the fort was used as a federal prison, while the most frequent transgression for the civilian prisoners was robbery. In July 1865 four special civilian prisoners arrived. These were Dr. Samuel Mudd, Edmund Spangler, Samuel Arnold, and Michael O'Laughlen, who had been convicted of conspiracy in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The most famous prisoner was Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth. Construction of Fort Jefferson was still under way when Dr. Mudd and his fellow prisoners arrived, Mudd provided much-praised medical care during a yellow fever epidemic at the fort in 1867, which killed many prisoners including O'Laughlen, and was eventually pardoned by President Andrew Johnson and released. By 1888, the military usefulness of Fort Jefferson had waned, and the cost of maintaining the fort due to the effects of frequent hurricanes and the corrosive and debilitating tropical climate could no longer be justified. In 1888, the Army turned the fort over to the Marine Hospital Service to be operated as a quarantine station.
In January 4, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who visited the area by ship, designated the area as Fort Jefferson National Monument. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1970. On October 26, 1992 the Dry Tortugas, including Fort Jefferson, was established as a National Park.

Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson
A trip to Florida in the middle of summer sounds crazy, but if you don't mind some heat and humidity, it's relatively free of tourists, especially pesky around Key West. We took a day trip out to the Dry Tortugas to snorkel and heck, just to see it - a great experience, highly recommended if you find yourself in the Keys. No nanny-state guardrails to keep you from falling off, either.

TORTUGAS ROCK - DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK ASTRO TIMELAPSE
On a remote island hours away from Key West lies the largest masonry structure in the Americas: Fort Jefferson. Built with 16 million bricks, but never finished, the fort served as a prison during Civil War. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, upon visiting the island, named it a National Monument, and in 1992 it became part of Dry Tortugas National Park.
Besides serving as a safe haven for the most preserved coral reef in the United States, the set of islands that comprise the national park also protect countless marine animals and bird species. However, the true treasure of this amazing place was noted by one of its most famous prisoners, Dr. Samuel Mudd, who once said that the the only escape from the hell of this prison was gazing at the night skies. Today, Dry Tortugas National Park is the darkest spot on USA's East Coast.
This video was filmed as part of SKYGLOW (skyglowproject.com), an ongoing crowdfunded quest to explore the effects and dangers of urban light pollution in contrast with some of the most incredible dark sky areas in North America. This project is being produced in collaboration with International Dark-Sky Association (darksky.org), a non-profit fighting for the preservation of night skies around the globe.
The film was shot on Canon 5DSR & 5DIII cameras & lenses sponsored by Canon USA, aided by Alpine Labs' Michron, powered by Paul C. Buff Vagabond Mini. LRTimelapse was used to process some of the shots.
