Waco Area, Fort Parker State Park, Mammoth Dig
Two Tired Teachers recently made a trip down I 35 to visit and see the things to do in Waco, TX.
Fort Parker State Park is the closest Texas State Park to Waco. It's about 40 miles from the Waco area. Fort Parker State Park is a relatively small state park in terms of the number of campsites, but it has over 10 miles of trails. Fishing, swimming, hiking, and biking are a few of the activities at Fort Parker State Park. If you want RV camping near Waco, Fort State Parker State Park is the place for you.
West, TX, a Czech community, is just 20 miles north of Waco. It is known throughout Texas for its bakeries. Kolaches are a popular item in this small Texas town. It is just east of I35.
The Waco Mammoth National Monument is part of the National Park Service in conjunction with Baylor University and the city of Waco. In the 1970s a farmer was plowing his fields and found a bone. He knew it was far too big to belong to a cow, and he called Baylor to have it identified.
The area became part of the National Park System, as they admit, after most of the work had been done. The mammoths found in the area weren't the better known Woolly Mammoths, but the lesser known, yet larger Columbian Mammoths.
The excavation is on hold for now due to some red tape, but the site is impressive. Though not nearly as large as the South Dakota dig, the Waco Mammoth dig is still an impressive site.
The historic Waco suspension bridge was built for pedestrians and horses and buggies. It was built in the 1800s, and the man who built it charged people to use it. It is now set in a beautiful park in Waco. The bridge crosses the Brazos River.
Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco, Texas although Dublin, Texas, a small town to the west, claims the first Dr Pepper plant to sweeten the drink with pure cane sugar. Though the Dublin bottling plant has quit making their popular variety of Dr. Pepper due to lawsuits, the Waco Dr Pepper Museum is still going strong. The highlight of the tour of the museum is the sample of Dr. Pepper you receive at the end of the tour.
The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Museum is also in Waco. These Texas Rangers are of the law enforcement variety, not baseball. The Texas Rangers were law enforcement in Texas during the 1800s.
The Branch Davidian Compound is approximately 15 miles east of Waco. It is now called The Branch.
Mexia, Texas is a small town near Waco. The Farm House in Mexia is a popular restaurant. Their motto isone bite of our catfish, and you're hooked. The restaurant has amazing southern fried catfish and the hushpuppies are lightly seasoned with jalapeno peppers.
