Fort Point is a masonry seacoast fortification located on the southern side of the Golden Gate at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. It is also the geographic name of the promontory upon which the fort and the southern approach of the Golden Gate Bridge were constructed.
The fort was completed just before the American Civil War by the United States Army, to defend San Francisco Bay against hostile warships. The fort is now protected as Fort Point National Historic Site, a United States National Historic Site administered by the National Park Service as a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
In 1769 Spain occupied the San Francisco area and by 1776 had established the area's first European settlement, with a mission and a presidio. To protect against encroachment by the British and Russians, Spain selected Punta del Cantil Blanco, a promontory with a high white cliff (cantil blanco) located at the narrowest part of the bay's entrance[4], to construct a fortification. The Castillo de San Joaquin was constructed in 1794, subordinate to the nearby Presidio de San Francisco. It was an adobe structure housing nine to thirteen cannons.
Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, gaining control of the region and the fort, but in 1835 the Mexican army moved to Sonoma leaving the castillo's adobe walls to crumble in the wind and rain. On July 1, 1846, after the Mexican–American War broke out between Mexico and the United States, U.S. forces, including Captain John Charles Fremont, Kit Carson and a band of 10 followers, captured and occupied the empty castillo and spiked (disabled) the cannons.
Sometime during the Spanish and Mexican eras, the Punta del Cantil Blanco came to be known as the Punta del Castillo, which was carried over into the era of U.S. sovereignty, in rough translation, as Fort Point.

If you are live in, are traveling to, or ever get stuck in San Francisco, we recommend checking this place out! We personally think this is the best place to take a photo of the Golden Gate Bridge.
We love going to Fort Point, it's our favorite place to go outside of Golden Gate Park. It is an old military garrison protecting San Francisco Bay. The Fort Point history is incredible. Today it serves as a military museum under the Golden Gate Bridge. We definitely recommend going on the free tours that happen a few times each hour.
This is fun for the whole family, and you won't believe the views!

Fort Point Historic Site: Visiting San Francisco's Civil War Fort
Fort Point is one of those places everyone who visits San Francisco should see. The historic fort from the 1850's is situated at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge and is fantastic for photos or just exploring. Do note that it is only open Friday to Sunday though so you can make sure you don't go when it is closed.

really wish i wasn't hungover as a dog this day, probably the only time i'll ever film surfing. would rather be surfing. also, two guys got sucked out and had to be rescued by the coast guard. camera died + memory full, otherwise i would've had some great rescue/baywatch like footage.
