UP Overland Route Sidney Sub; Archer Hill, High Plains; Day 1
On February 1st through the 4th, I made a trip with my dad to Cheyenne as a last out of state railfanning trip together before I ship out. In the 3 days I was there, we explored Cheyenne, and of course did some railfanning. In the first day, which was the day after I arrived, we explored a spot I always wanted to go to more of, Archer Hill, and we explored the high plains east of Cheyenne.
In the video, we catch 11 trains, which is far short of my quota of 20, but regardless, I made the best of it under the conditions of what I and my camera could handle. We catch manifests, intermodel, coal, grain, autoracks, an SD60 and even an unpatched SP! You'll also notice some of the clips are spiked and/or muffled, which I apologize in advance for, but you need to understand, Cheyenne is a windy place, and winds there topped out around 30-40mph, which caused the audio to become weird. Anyway, this is Day 1. Day 2 and 3 will be combined into one video and be put up later on in the week.

Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park
Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park's 2017 season will be May 2-October 8, 2017. The 360-acre park near Royal, Nebraska is home to three-dimensional skeletons of prehistoric animals, including rhinos, camels, three-toed horses, and birds, among others -- all preserved in the area where volcanic ash killed them 12 million years ago.
Visitors have the opportunity to watch as paleontologists uncover new fossils in the 17,500 square-foot Hubbard Rhino Barn. Visitors can also view museum exhibits on the Ashfall animals in its visitor center and talk with researchers as they prepare specimens for study. Interactive exhibits of petrified wood, rivers of Nebraska, and the contributions of farmers and amateur paleontologists to the Ashfall story is found in the Dickinson Fossil Heritage Center. In addition, visitors can enjoy the natural setting on nearby nature trails, which were developed to help interpret the geology and plant life of the area. Picnic tables are available at the park and campers may use nearby Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area.
The paleontology treasure is a joint project of the University of Nebraska State Museum and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Two officers shot, suspect dead
A Hood County Sheriff's Deputy was reported to be shot in the head in Oak Trail Shores this morning, and a helicopter was called for transport. A short time later, an exchange of gunfire took place on Houston Street near Granbury City Hall. A suspect driving a van was shot and killed and a police officer was taken to the hospital. Kent Whites, who was on the square when the shooting took place, said We heard all these shots. We thought it was reenactors. It is not clear whether the incidents are related, or if the shooter was acting alone.

We drove to Sacramento to see the Union Pacific 150 years anniversary celebration in old Sacramento. The UP844 steam engine was there on static display. Kids had lots of fun

Steam Locomotive No. 844
The Last of the Steam is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific Railroad. It was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger.
Many people know the engine as the No. 8444, since an extra '4' was added to its number in 1962 to distinguish it from a diesel numbered in the 800 series. The steam engine regained its rightful number in June 1989, after the diesel was retired.
When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service.
The engine has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific's ambassador of goodwill. It has made appearances at Expo '74 in Spokane, the 1981 opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans and the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Los Angeles Union Station in 1989.
Hailed as Union Pacific's Living Legend, the engine is widely known among railroad enthusiasts for its excursion runs, especially over Union Pacific's fabled crossing of Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming.

Nebraska's official state celebration is held in North Platte the second and third week of June each year. The festivities kick off with the Heritage Festival at the Lincoln County Historical Museum, followed by the Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant, and the great Buffalo Bill Rodeo. The fun winds up with two great nights of concerts with the Summer Jam concert series.
