Fortaleza San Felipe - Puerto Plata - Dominican Republic
Fortaleza San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress located in the north of Dominican Republic in the province of Puerto Plata. Is also known as El Morro de San Felipe and was used to protect the City of Puerto Plata from pirates and corsairs. It is located on a hill at the Puntilla Del Malecón, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; its strategic location protected the entrance to the city's seaport. The construction of the fort was commissioned by King Felipe II of Spain in 1564, and it was completed in 1577 by Don Rengifo de Angulo, the fort's mayor.
Today, the Fortaleza San Felipe serves as a museum showcasing the important role it has played in the history of Puerto Plata, and the Dominican Republic. The Fortaleza houses military artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.

San Felipe de Puerto Plata es la capital de la provincia de Puerto Plata, en la costa norte del Atlántico de República Dominicana. La ciudad es conocida por sus playas. La gran extensión de la Playa Dorada está resguardada por centros turísticos y un campo de golf con 18 hoyos. El centro antiguo de la ciudad data de la época colonial y está dominado por la fortaleza de San Felipe, del siglo XVI, una edificación española que actualmente alberga artefactos históricos y militares.

Dado que la bahía de Puerto Plata es profunda y bien protegida, es además la más cercana a Santiago de los Caballeros y del Cibao para servir de puerto. Estas condiciones fueron estratégicas para la construcción de la fortaleza que también conocida como El Morro de San Felipe.
Su construcción fue encargada por el rey Felipe II de España, y fue completada en 1577 por Rengifo de Angulo, el alcaide del fuerte.
La fortaleza funcionó como prisión en varias ocasiones y allí estuvo el patricio Juan Pablo Duarte en calidad de Preso político por órdenes de Pedro Santana.
