Fortingall Yew 5000 years old
The Fortingall Yew is an ancient European yew in the churchyard of the village of Fortingall in Perthshire, Scotland. Modern estimates by experts have put its age at between 4,500 and 5,000 years. It may be the oldest tree in Britain.

A visit to the Fortingall Yew, the oldest tree in Europe at about 5,000 years. My ancestors lived in the village near this tree for 6 centuries until they emigrated en masse in the 1840s.

The church is also famous for its Rood screen. The Church site is circular apparently a sign that it was once a Pagan site. The church is in an exquisite location, its Rood Screen is most remarkable and probably unique in the British Isles according to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales . On our visit to various local churches it seems that they somehow avoided the Puritan zeal to remove all distractions from churches.

Cheers for joining us today folks, this one is actually pretty interesting.
Had a fun day checking out some priceless trees. Went up to Twickenham, round Richmond Park, then went down to a mad heritage site, the historical spot called Runnymede, which is where some King signed the Magna Carta in 1215, a pretty famous event in British history, and at this spot by the ruins of an abbey is this Yew tree that's estimated to be 2500 years old... just think about the life of that tree, actually being there for all that time slowly growing fatter. For all you catholic folks out there, this tree was old when your boy Christ was born back in year 0.
Obviously man had to climb her even in the poor conditions.

Berry strange: UK's oldest tree undergoing 'sex change'
The UK's oldest tree, thought to be up to 5,000-years-old, is undergoing a sex change.
Records have always noted the Fortingall Yew in Perthshire as a male tree but it has recently started sprouting berries - something only female yew trees do.
Experts at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh spotted three berries on a high branch of the tree, located in the churchyard of the village of Fortingall, Perthshire, and have now taken them for analysis as part of a conservation project.
Dr Max Coleman, of the Royal Botanic Garden, said yew trees have been known to change sex before but discovering the process on such a special tree is what makes this a special story.
The Fortingall Yew is thought be between 3,000 and 5,000-years-old, and is one of the oldest living organisms in Europe.
It has survived the ravages of time and the attention of eager tourists, who in previous centuries took clippings from it as a souvenir.
The trunk changed shape many years ago and has lost its centre and one side, and the tree is now protected by a small wall.
Dr Coleman said: Yew trees are male or female usually and it is pretty easy to spot which is which in autumn - males have tiny things that produce pollen and f emales have bright red berries from autumn into winter.
This process may have happened before but we know the Fortingall Yew has been classed as male for hundreds of years through records.
It's hard to say how rare it is but conifers that have separate sexes, have been observed to switch sex and it's not really fully understood.
The sex change isn't the amazing bit in this case, it's the fact it's this particular tree.
Finding female berries on this special tree is what makes it such a special story.

Britain's oldest tree is 'CHANGING SEX' after 5,000 years
The oldest tree in Britain has started to change sex, it has been claimed.
The 5,000 year old Fortingall Yew, in Perthshire, Scotland, has for hundreds of years been recorded as 'male', meaning it produces pollen, whereas female yews produce red berries.
But in a 'rare and unusual phenomenon' baffling scientists, it has started to sprout red seeds, suggesting that part of the tree is changing gender.
