History flows through Moscow's fountains
They are a big part of Moscow's streets and squares, some elegant and enchanting, others quite monumental. We could not do it in winter, but now it is time to listen to the music of falling water with the capital's fountains.

Gorky Park or Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure founded in 1928 and it stretches out on about 100 hectares. Gorky Park is one of the largest amusement parks in Europe. The chief architect of the Central Park of Culture and Leisure plan was the avaunt-garde architect Constantine Melnikov, who conducted in the late 20-ies of XX century parterre style layout of the park from the park's entry to the Neskuchny Garden.
In the XVIII century, on the future park territory, there was located the Neskushnoe estate owned by Prokofy Demidov. It was very famous not only for its majestic buildings, mansions in the best traditions of the time, but also a magnificent botanical garden. In this garden, according to some reports, there were several thousand different plant species. Even then, the place was quite a popular holiday destination, accessible, however, only the upper class. Later on, Demidov sold his property by parts, and its owners were several people at once. As a result, to this day remain only a few buildings which were located on the mansion land.

The fountains of VDNX Park Moscow
The fountains of VDNX Park Moscow.
The park is very Soviet looking with lots of architecture & iconography.
The pavilions have some interesting interiors but also some of it has rather tacky kiosks & shops.
They could do with thoughtful restoration & maybe used as a museum of the Soviet era.
But it is nice sitting there in the sun eating & drinking, watching the fountains.
A good job has been made of restoration of the nearby Space Obelisk which at one point (about 3 years ago) was looking rather sad & neglected but now has a nice park & a museum to cosmonauts beneath it.
It will be nice to see the return of the famous statue featuring the farm girl & factory worker representing agriculture & industry holding aloft the hammer & sickle, that was used by Mosfilms as a symbol at the beginning of their films.
That statue has now been unveiled (4 Dec 2009) but I am not sure if it is in its original position.
