Albion Indiana
The Town of Albion, founded in 1836, is a charming community of 2, 556 residents. From its historic Downtown Square to the over 80 acres of award-winning parkland, Albion prides itself on being a small town with big character. Those who live, work, and visit enjoy several locally owned eateries, a brewery, and an ice cream shop.
Furthermore, Albion is home to the Old Jailhouse Museum where visitors can experience their local history, the Black Pine Animal Sanctuary (awarded a Certificate of Excellence on Trip Advisor) where exotic animals roam, and a brand new Splash Pad installed at Hidden Diamonds park, a cool reprieve from the sun on a summer day. Down the road just a few miles from town? Chain O’ Lakes State Park - which sees over 300,000 visitors per year and is the focal point from which the Town’s slogan was born.
Most every day-to-day task can be accomplished here. A run to the bank. A fill-up on gas. A quick trip to the hardware store for a box of nails. But for the few amenities only found in bigger municipalities, Albion finds itself in the middle of it all, as the geographic center of
Northeast Indiana. It is only a short trip to Ft. Wayne or Warsaw, where residents can shop, but many would agree that Albion’s “room to breathe” is its biggest appeal.
In the summers, Albion hosts the Chain O’ Lakes Festival, and in the fall they host an event called “Scare on the Square” to celebrate Halloween. These events, and dozens of others, draw the citizens of Albion together to celebrate, eat delicious food, and enjoy the company of others in the Downtown Square - surrounded by the businesses and history that have made Albion what it is today, at 182 years old.
Albion is the perfect place to live, work, and play, offering employment opportunities, a renowned local school system (Home of the 2018 Class 2A Women’s State Basketball Champions), and a community of hardworking individuals.
We’re more than the Gateway to Chain O’ Lakes, we’re the Gateway to Opportunity.

The Future of Fair Oaks Mall
As more people shop online, many brick and mortar malls are struggling. That includes the Fair Oaks Mall in Columbus. City leaders don't want to see the building deteriorate and become an eyesore.
Concord Mall (DE) - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Concord Mall in Wilmington, DE from December 24, 2018. This is a very cool mall with plenty of vintage (for today) touches, like planters, fountains, and palm trees sprinkled liberally throughout. It is also home to the largest Strawbridge & Clothier seal, proudly on display at Macy's mall entrance. We love coming to this mall and every time we do, it feels pretty great walking around.

Here is a portion of a 2017 article written by the great SkyCity2 blog:
Opening in 1965, Concord Mall was originally a small enclosed mall anchored on the south end by a store called Almart, a discount division of Allied Stores founded in 1962. The mall attached to Almart was also built by Allied Stores. While Allied Stores no longer exists as an entity in the U.S., it appears that the mall itself was spun off to a small corporation bearing the name of the former corporate parent. The early mall was a relatively small and noncompetitive ancillary mall compared with other malls in the market, so it is remarkable that the mall is not only still around today but is doing quite well.
Concord Mall is not a mall without competition, which is part of what makes it unique in how well it does. Add to that that all malls in Delaware greatly benefit from being in a state with no sales tax, meaning that retail is big business in the First State. This draws in many shoppers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey that might otherwise go to competing malls. In all, it basically carved out its own niche in the market despite being 14 miles from far more popular Christiana Mall, 17 miles from Springfield Mall, 17 miles from Exton Square Mall and 27 miles from the massive King of Prussia Mall. Its present anchors today include Boscov's, Macy's, Macy's Home and Sears.
The layout of the original mall was a straight-shot one level mall with a small three-story office building in the middle making it a fairly typical mall of that period. In 1971, the mall saw its first addition when a Pomeroy's was added on the northern end of the mall transforming it a standard dumbbell shaped mall. The biggest coup for the mall, however, came in 1983 when Philadelphia-based Strawbridge & Clothier opened an elegant new store in the front of the mall. This new store came with very distinct architectural touches and was coupled with an update to the mall that restructured a dark and plain mall into a far more attractive one with a large glass atrium in the center court, added skylights, new planters, fountains and an updated look. It made an ancillary mall into a truly competitive one.
In 1984, the Almart chain was sold off to the Montgomery Ward corporation, which Ward's subsequently opened as a unit of their Jefferson Ward division, a discount format of Montgomery Ward. Jefferson Ward was poorly operated by Montgomery Ward, and the stores were sold the following year to Bradlees. Two years after Almart was sold, the Pomeroy's location was sold off to Boscov's as part of their expansion into the Philadelphia region and as part of the Campeau purchase of Allied stores.
The positive side of all of this was that none of these changes harmed the mall. Changes in the industry in this case helped improve the mall's position in the market by making it more appealing to the residents of the region by bringing in popular stores. The addition of Boscov's and Strawbridge's was far more of a boon to the mall than its original format as a low-end mall anchoring a 1960's discount store. 1992 saw the closure and demolition of the Bradlees for a new two-story Sears. Soon after, 1994 saw creative reuse of the office building draped over the mall as Strawbridge's decided to expand its home section into the office building. This change created a strange quirk in the mall where the upper levels of the home store actually overlook the mall itself. Thus, what is otherwise a one level mall suddenly jumps to three levels! After these two changes occurred, Concord Mall finally stabilized.
What is also remarkable about Concord Mall is the way it looks today. It was certainly a shock to enter a mall that had so much of what is rarely seen in malls today: lush planters, three fountains, colorful decor, and distinctive architectural touches sorely missed in most other malls. Add this in with the very unique design for the Macy's and the surprising layout of the vertical home store, and what would otherwise be a very bland mall is actually quite beautiful. In all, Concord Mall got better with age in its 50+ years of business. It was an unexpected and surprising retail diamond that will hopefully continue to shine for many more.

Dead Mall: Seminole Mall Florida
**DEMOLISHED AND REPLACED WITH SEMINOLE CITY CENTRE**
Hello Everyone! Exploring my first dead mall. This is Seminole Mall located in Seminole, Florida. It's officially listed as a dead mall on deadmalls.com. Many stores have been left abandoned or vacant.
When hard times hit in the late 2000s, a lot of the smaller stores closed followed by the larger anchor stores. This brought about the foreclosure of the mall in 2011 by a bank holding company.
Built in 1965, Seminole Mall holds a lot of historical significance to the area as it was the location of the meeting where City Council members chose to designate Seminole as a city. It was considered Seminole Downtown at the time, and still is today.
Developers, North American Development Group (who specialize in managing and the development/redevelopment of shopping centers) along with Primerica Group One purchased this mall sitting on 39 acres with a proposal in mind to build a larger more modern shopping center renaming it Seminole City Center razing this mall completely. Its fate with the wrecking ball will commence between December of 2015 and March of 2016 with full completion of the newer open air shopping center one year later.
NADG and Primerica Group One purchased Seminole Mall for only $14.6 million, much cheaper than what Downtown Seminole purchased it for in 2006 paying $35.7 million. A year later, in 2013, they purchased two commercial business buildings near the property for $1.8 million. These will be part of the redevelopment process and will not be razed. One of the anchor stores currently in business at Seminole Mall, Stein Mart, will be relocating to one of these buildings before demolition commences.
Only a few stores remain. K-Mart closed its doors in 2012 and Ross closed in January of 2014 leaving behind Stein Mart and Bells as the larger anchor stores. Publix also relocated across the road, and CVS closed more recently. Most of the smaller stores and all of the restaurants are gone. There is also an attached plaza which has mostly closed stores. This mall has a unique design with the mall and plaza combined, and was once a hustling and bustling place to shop.
I believe this is the end of the mall era which saddens me, personally. I have always preferred them over the newer open air plazas. I still remember when it was the malls that took over the downtown shopping areas. Now the big box stores are taking over the malls. They are more convenient to shop in, especially during inclement weather not having to drive to other areas of the parking lot, or dodging traffic while walking on foot. Everything was right there including a foot court. Clearwater Mall, also nearby in Florida, was foreclosed upon the same year, also replaced with an open air shopping center.
I wanted to document this history before it was lost to the recking ball for good. This seems to be the fate of many malls of today, soon to be yesteryear.
Thanks for watching! :)

Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
[CHECK OUT CHANNEL: AUDIOBOOK FOR PULP & SOUTH OF NO NORTH]
Written By: Charles Bukowski
Narrated By: Christian Baskous
Publisher: HarperCollins
PublishersDate: August 2013
Summary:
In what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels, Charles Bukowski details the long, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol, women, and the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of D. H. Lawrence, Ham on Rye offers a crude, brutal, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast's coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.
Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.
