Driving Downtown - Cincinnati Ohio USA
Short on time? Watch at high speed :)
Cincinnati is a city in and the county seat of Hamilton County, Ohio, United States.[7] The third largest city in Ohio and the 65th largest city in the United States, it had a population of 296,945 at the 2010 census. According to the census,[8] the population of the metropolitan area was 2,214,954 - the 28th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the United States and the largest centered in Ohio.[9] Settled in 1788, the city is located on the border between Ohio and Kentucky at the confluence of the Ohio River and the Licking River. Residents of Cincinnati are called Cincinnatians.[10]
In the early 19th century, Cincinnati was an American boomtown in the heart of the country to rival the larger coastal cities in size and wealth, at one point being the 6th largest city in the United States by population, surpassed only by the older, established settlements of the Eastern Seaboard and New Orleans.[11] Because it is the first major American city founded after the American Revolution as well as the first major inland city in the country, Cincinnati is sometimes thought of as the first purely American city.[12] It developed with less European immigration or influence than eastern cities in the same period; however, it received a significant number of German immigrants, who founded many of the city's cultural institutions. By the end of the 19th century, with the shift from steamboats to railroads, Cincinnati's growth had slowed considerably and the city became surpassed in population by other inland cities, Chicago and St. Louis.
Cincinnati is home to two major sports teams, the Cincinnati Reds, one of the oldest franchises in Major League Baseball, and the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League. The University of Cincinnati, founded in 1819, is one of the 50 largest in the United States.[13] Cincinnati is known for its historic architecture. In the late 1800s, Cincinnati was commonly referred to as Paris of America, mainly due to significant architectural projects, like Music Hall, the Cincinnatian Hotel, and the Shillito Department Store.[14]
Cityscape[edit]
Downtown Cincinnati is focused around Fountain Square, a public square and event location.
Cincinnati is home to numerous structures that are noteworthy due to their architectural characteristics or historic associations including the Carew Tower, the Scripps Center, the Ingalls Building, Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, and the Isaac M. Wise Temple.[29]
The city is undergoing significant changes due to new development and private investment, as well as the construction of the long-stalled Banks project, which will include apartments, retail, restaurants, and offices and will stretch from Great American Ball Park to Paul Brown Stadium. Phase 1A is already complete and 100% occupied as of early 2013. Smale Riverfront Park is a development working alongside with The Banks and is Cincinnati's newest park. Nearly $3.5 billion has been invested in the urban core of Cincinnati (including Northern Kentucky). Much has been done by 3CDC.
Queen City Square opened on January 11, 2011, at 1:11 p.m. EST. The building is the tallest in Cincinnati (surpassing the Carew Tower), and is the third tallest in Ohio, reaching a height of 665 feet.[30] In 2013 the Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati opened, the first casino in the city and fourth in the state of Ohio.
Economy
Many major corporations have their head offices in Cincinnati such as Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, and Macy's, Inc., among many others.
The largest employer in Cincinnati, Kroger, has 17,000 employees. The University of Cincinnati is the second largest, with 15,162 employees.[48]
Events[edit]
Cincinnati hosts a number of large annual events. Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, Bockfest, and the Taste of Cincinnati feature local restauranteurs. Music-related events include the Cincinnati May Festival, MidPoint Music Festival, and Cincinnati Bell/WEBN Riverfest. There is an annual marathon, the Flying Pig Marathon. Tall Stacks, held every three or four years, celebrates the city's riverboat heritage.

Toronto, Ohio - Lincoln Elementary School
My memories: Built in 1930, Lincoln Elementary School has been closed for several years and is up for auction Dec. 20 at 11 a.m.
I was a student at Lincoln School Kindergarten through 6th grade (1961 - 1968). When I was in Kindergarten, I remember the school had grades K - 8th.
My teachers were: Mrs. Cope - Kindergarten; Mrs. Lucille Woomer - 1st; Mrs. Shirley Riggleman - 3rd; Mrs. Edna Wright - 4th; Mrs. Castle - 5th and Mrs. Gloria Argentine - 6th.
Mr. James Crawford, assistant band director under D.W. Hoover taught music once a week (singing) and also taught instrumental music. The art teacher was Miss LeeEtta Wade (Bray).

ABOUT SPEAKER
Ms. Setsuko Thurlow:
As a 13-year old schoolgirl, Setsuko Thurlow found herself in close proximity to the hypocenter of the atomic blast that rocked Hiroshima. A survivor of one of the most pivotal events in modern history, she shares her experiences in order to sensitize us to the consequences of armed conflict on civilian populations and to promote lasting peace. She joined forces with the mayors of Toronto, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki to establish the Peace Garden in Toronto. Over the years, she has served with a number of organizations, including Voices of Women, the Canadian Council of Churches and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, à Canadian Pugwash Group and Toronto Hiroshima Day Coalition, continuing her journey from victim to activist. On October 26, 2007, she received the Order of Canada Citation in Toronto, Ontario.
Mr. Yasuaki YAMASHITA:
When the A-Bomb fell on Nagasaki, August 9, 1945, Yasuaki Yamashita was 6 years old. An artist and ceramicist, he moved to Mexico in 1968, where he has accepted many invitations to speak about his A-Bomb experience. These have included schools, universities, cultural centers, a committee of the Mexican Senate, and the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts. In 2010 he gave his testimony at a memorial ceremony organized by the Mexico City Government on the occasion of the 65th Anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombs. He feels that it is important to keep alive the memory of the suffering, devastation, and death that nuclear weapons can cause in the hope that no one will ever use them again.
Mr. Clifton Truman Daniel:
Clifton Truman Daniel is the oldest grandson of 33rd US President Harry S. Truman and the honorary chairman of the Truman Library Institute in Independence, MO. A former journalist and public relations executive, Mr. Daniel is the author of two books on his grandparents, Growing Up With Grandfather: Memories of Harry S. Truman (Birch Lane Press, 1995) and Dear Harry, Love Bess: Bess Truman's Letters to Harry Truman, 1919-1943 (Truman State University Press, 2011). He is currently at work on a book on the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Polar bear, Detroit Zoo, Detroit, Michigan, United States, North America
The polar bear is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is a large bear, approximately the same size as the omnivorous Kodiak bear (Ursus arctos middendorffi). A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–700 kg (770–1,540 lb), while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is the sister species of the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time at sea. Their scientific name means maritime bear, and derives from this fact. Polar bears hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present. The polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species, with eight of the nineteen polar bear subpopulations in decline. For decades, large scale hunting raised international concern for the future of the species but populations rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect. For thousands of years, the polar bear has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of Arctic indigenous peoples, and polar bears remain important in their cultures. The polar bear is found in the Arctic Circle and adjacent land masses as far south as Newfoundland Island. Due to the absence of human development in its remote habitat, it retains more of its original range than any other extant carnivore. While they are rare north of 88°, there is evidence that they range all the way across the Arctic, and as far south as James Bay in Canada. Their southernmost range is near the boundary between the subarctic and humid continental climate zones. They can occasionally drift widely with the sea ice, and there have been anecdotal sightings as far south as Berlevåg on the Norwegian mainland and the Kuril Islands in the Sea of Okhotsk. It is difficult to estimate a global population of polar bears as much of the range has been poorly studied; however, biologists use a working estimate of about 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears worldwide. There are 19 generally recognized, discrete subpopulations. The subpopulations display seasonal fidelity to particular areas, but DNA studies show that they are not reproductively isolated. The thirteen North American subpopulations range from the Beaufort Sea south to Hudson Bay and east to Baffin Bay in western Greenland and account for about 70% of the global population. The Eurasian population is broken up into the eastern Greenland, Barents Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, and Chukchi Sea subpopulations, though there is considerable uncertainty about the structure of these populations due to limited mark and recapture data. The range includes the territory of five nations: Denmark (Greenland), Norway (Svalbard), Russia, the United States (Alaska) and Canada. These five nations are the signatories of the International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears, which mandates cooperation on research and conservations efforts throughout the polar bear's range. Modern methods of tracking polar bear populations have been implemented only since the mid-1980s, and are expensive to perform consistently over a large area. The most accurate counts require flying a helicopter in the Arctic climate to find polar bears, shooting a tranquilizer dart at the bear to sedate it, and then tagging the bear. In Nunavut, some Inuit have reported increases in bear sightings around human settlements in recent years, leading to a belief that populations are increasing. Scientists have responded by noting that hungry bears may be congregating around human settlements, leading to the illusion that populations are higher than they actually are. The Polar Bear Specialist Group of the IUCN takes the position that estimates of subpopulation size or sustainable harvest levels should not be made solely on the basis of traditional ecological knowledge without supporting scientific studies. Of the 19 recognized polar bear subpopulations, eight are declining, three are stable, one is increasing, and seven have insufficient data, as of 2009. The polar bear is often regarded as a marine mammal because it spends many months of the year at sea. However, it is the only living marine mammal with powerful, large limbs and feet that allow them to cover miles on foot and run on land. Its preferred habitat is the annual sea ice covering the waters over the continental shelf and the Arctic inter-island archipelagos.
