CHAPTER 05 Houston's Shamrock Hotel, Downtown Movie Theaters
SHAMROCK HOTEL, MOVIE THEATERS, TSU SIT-IN
On St. Patrick's Day in 1949 the glamorous Shamrock Hotel opened in Houston. Built by the wealthy and flamboyant Texas oil wildcatter, Glenn McCarthy, it was the finest hotel in Texas at the time. For the grand opening ceremonies and parties, McCarthy brought in more than 175 Hollywood celebrities who arrived by plane and special trains. He arranged for actress Dorothy Lamour to do her national radio show live from the hotel ballroom, the Emerald Room. The crowds were so big and so rowdy that even the governor of Texas could not get in for the opening ceremonies. Because of the clamor, Lamour's radio show was cut off by radio executives and she left the room in tears.
The grand opening attracted national attention to Texas and author Edna Ferber included it in her sensational new novel Giant. The book was banned in Texas libraries, but later in 1956, it became a movie classic starring Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. The character of Jett Rink, played by James Dean in the movie, was modeled after Glenn McCarthy. In the movie the opening of Jett Rink's hotel was influenced by the real opening of McCarthy's Shamrock.
Built a few miles south of downtown Houston, in a resort-like setting, the hotel had eighteen stories and more than 1,100 guest rooms. The people of Houston loved the Shamrock, however, some critics described it as being outrageously vulgar. Nevertheless, to the rest of the world, it became an extravagant symbol of Texas during that era. McCarthy used the Irish theme throughout the hotel and designers selected more than sixty different shades of green for the interior décor.
With its impressive lobby, grand ballrooms, lively nightclubs, big name entertainment, and fine-dining restaurants, the Shamrock Hotel became the epicenter of Houston high society. Surrounded by landscaped terraces and tropical gardens, the Olympic-sized swimming pool was large enough to hold boat shows and water skiiers. Local society debutantes, as well as the rich and famous, could be seen in the pool or lounging in one of the poolside cabanas.
As time moved on, newer hotels were built and tastes changed; Glenn McCarthy and the Shamrock fell on hard times. The Hilton Corporation took over the hotel, renaming it the Shamrock Hilton. Convention facilities were added and the hotel became popular for trade shows and meetings. Trader Vic's Restaurant, with its Polynesian theme, was added to the hotel and became a favorite night spot. The Shamrock remained one of Houston's premier hotels, and a favorite lodging place for visiting celebrities and royalty until the 1980s. Even though the once-grand Shamrock was demolished in 1987, it is still fondly remembered by Houstonians as a colorful era in Texas history.
Houston had three large and elegant downtown movie palaces built in the 1920s--the Majestic (1923), the Metropolitan (1926), and the Loew's State (1927). Operated by Interstate Theaters of Texas, the Majestic and Metropolitan also had live shows. The spectacular Egyptian-themed Metropolitan was built by Houston financier Jesse Jones as part of his new Lamar Hotel complex. The Loew's, which was next door and faced Main Street, was considered one of the finest theaters in the Loew's chain outside of New York City. Sadly, all three of these opulent Houston movie palaces closed in the 1970s and have been demolished.
In March of 1960, students from Texas Southern University, a predominantly African American college in Houston, bravely staged a sit-in at the lunch counter at a Weingarten's grocery store near downtown. It was the first sit-in Texas had experienced and the students demanded equal rights and the end of the racial injustice that prevented blacks from sitting at the counter and eating with white patrons. It was the beginning of the end of racial segregation of businesses and public facilities in Houston.
All of this history is contained in the photo collections at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center in the Texas Room at the Houston Public Library. Video scenes are from the documentary, In Search of Houston History, produced by the Friends of the Texas Room and aired on HoustonPBS.

Sneaky Ways Movie Theaters Get You To Spend More Money
Between ticket prices and concessions, movie theaters are expensive. But movie theater chains like AMC and Regal only keep around 50% of the revenue from ticket sales each year. But theaters are able to keep over 80% of concessions revenue as profit. So most theaters are designed to get you to spend money on food. And it works, AMC reports that more than 71% of attendees spend money on concessions.

Mistakes in Sanju Movie- 2018| Ranbir Kapoor
Sanju (Hindi pronunciation: [səndʒuː]) is a 2018 Indian biographical film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. It was jointly produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra under the banners Rajkumar Hirani Films and Vinod Chopra Films respectively. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Indian actor Sanjay Dutt, and the story follows through various stages of Dutt's life. The film features an ensemble cast with Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Jim Sarbh playing pivotal roles.
In a conversation with Hirani, Dutt shared anecdotes from his life, which the former found intriguing and prompted him to make a film based on Dutt's life. It was titled Sanju after the nickname Dutt's mother Nargis used to call him. Principal photography began in January 2017 and was completed by January 2018. The film's soundtrack was composed by Rohan-Rohan and Vikram Montrose with A. R. Rahman as a guest composer. Fox Star Studios acquired the distribution rights of the film.
Sanju was released worldwide on 29 June 2018. It received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised Kapoor's performance as Dutt and Hirani's direction, but were divided on the performances of the rest of the cast and the film's accuracy. The film registered the highest opening for any film released in India in 2018. It earned ₹97.99 crore worldwide within two days of its release, becoming one of the highest grossing Indian films of 2018.
Tripathi, a biographer, attempts to write a biography on Sanjay Dutt, comparing him with Mahatma Gandhi. An angry Dutt has him thrown out. The Bombay High Court delivers its verdict regarding the 1993 Bombay bombings and sentences Dutt to five years jail term for violating Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). Manyata Dutt approaches Winnie Diaz, a London-based writer, to write Dutt's biography and present his story to the public. Although unwilling at first, Winnie is threatened by Zubin Mistry, a former drug peddler turned builder to not write the biography, which, on the contrary, intrigues her and compels her to do so. Winnie first interviews Dutt, and his life is revealed in a flashback.
The son of Sunil Dutt and Nargis, Sanjay's father plans to launch him with the film Rocky to help Sanjay establish an acting career in Bollywood. Upset over his father's harsh behaviour, Sanjay is encouraged by his friend Mistry to try drugs for the first time. Sanjay soon discovers that his mother Nargis is suffering from cancer and is taken to New York for treatment. This incident furthers his descent into alcoholism and drug addiction. He meets Kamlesh 'Kamli' Kanhaiyalalal Kapasi in New York, and they become quick friends. His ongoing drug addiction results in the eventual breakup with his girlfriend Ruby. Nargis passes away three days before the release of Rocky in 1981, which takes an emotional toll on Sanjay. Sanjay agrees to attend a rehabilitation centre in the United States, and eventually recovers. On returning to India, he meets with Mistry and thrashes him for almost destroying his life.
The later part of Dutt's life is narrated by his friend Kamlesh. In the 1990s, Sanjay inclines towards body building, inciting comparisons with American professional boxer Muhammad Ali. His career in Bollywood has greatly improved. After the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition, Sanjay acquires three AK-56 rifles to ensure the protection of his father and sister, Priya Dutt. A series of bombings occur in Bombay shortly herafter. Sanjay is arrested in 1993 for possession of illegal arms supposedly supplied by the D-Company to be trafficked for protection during potential communal rioting after the bombings. Sanjay is convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for five years, threatening his career. Indian media brandishes him as a terrorist, further tarnishing his public image.
After his release in 1997, Sanjay appears in a string of flops. When his career seems almost finished, he bags a role in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S (2003), co-starring with his father. Sanjay's performamnce garners several accolades and his public image greatly improves, making his father proud. Shortly afterwards, his father passes away. In 2006, the Bombay High Court finds Dutt guilty under the Possession of Arms Act. Between 2005 and 2007, he is arrested on two short occasions but is granted bail, allowing him to work in films. In 2013, he was arrested again by the verdict handed by the Supreme Court of India.
Sanjay reconciles with his friend Kamlesh and finds out that Winnie has completed writing his biography, titled Kuch Toh Log Kahenge

Aaron Russo - America Freedom to Fascism (MULTI SUB)
America: Freedom to Fascism is a 2006 film by Aaron Russo, which alleges among a variety of claims that income tax is illegal. The documentary covers many subjects, including: the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the income tax, Federal Reserve System, national ID cards (REAL ID Act), human-implanted RFID tags (Spychips), Diebold electronic voting machines, globalization, Big Brother, taser weapons abuse, and the alleged use of terrorism by government as a means to diminish the citizens' rights.
The Film Determined to find the law that requires American citizens to pay income tax, producer Aaron Russo set out on a journey to find the evidence. This film which is neither left, nor right-wing is a startling examination of government. It exposes the systematic erosion of civil liberties in America since 1913 when the Federal Reserve system was fraudulently created.
Director: Aaron Russo (1943--2007)
Writer: Aaron Russo
Stars: Aaron Russo, John Turner and Joe Banister

No Fracking Way (part two)
According to Brad Gill, Executive Director
Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York... natural gas is a clean, abundant and affordable fuel. Increasing production here in New York will help improve our economy, increase tax revenues and jobs, and bring our nation closer to energy independence.
When you think about 1.3 million wells across the nation [that] have been fracked, [with] about 900,000 producing today, you can name several incidents that aren't true contamination but [simply] methane-charged water.
But what do the people who are drinking methane-charged water have to say?
I wish that they had never come, obviously. We had peace and tranquility before... and it's just been an absolute living hell.
Resident of Dimock, Pennsylvania
Since 2008, over 4,000 gas wells have been drilled in Pennsylvania. Farmers in southwestern PA blame cattle deaths and mutations on local hydraulic fracturing. Other community complaints include tainted water, children getting sick, skin rashes, and neurological disorders.
For the rest of my life I'm going to be living in fear of having that well there.
Resident of Dimock, Pennsylvania
Natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale in Dimock has released methane into the water supply, drinking water wells have exploded, and others were found to contain so much gas that one homeowner was told to open a window if he planned to take a bath.
There has to be hope, because this is too crazy to let happen.
Resident of Dimock, Pennsylvania
In three (3) separate spills at the Heitsman well in a rural area just south of Montrose, PA about 8,000 gallons of a carcinogenic chemical -- used to ease resistance in gas well production -- polluted a wetland and caused a fish kill in Stevens Creek. The chemical, LGC-35 CBM, is manufactured by Halliburton. It dissolves in water (making cleanup extremely difficult), has led to skin cancer in animals and may cause headache, dizziness and other central nervous system effects to anyone who breathes or swallows it according to the Material Safety Data Sheets for LGC-35 CBM.
For slick water, high-volume hydrofracking, it is estimated that with each fracking, 2 to 9 million gallons of fresh water are used. About half of the frac fluid remains in the ground, while the other 1,000,000 to 4,000,000 gallons comes back up out of the well along with thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals and radioactive matter known as produced water.
The United States Department of Energy considers the waste water from hydraulic fracturing to be one of the most toxic industrial byproducts of the gas and oil industry.
WE CAN IMPROVE OUR ECONOMY, INCREASE TAX REVENUES, AND CREATE JOBS WITH ABUNDANT, AFFORDABLE, CLEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY
