South China Sea erupts: US calls out China 'intimidation' as row escalates
CHINA has been the subject of a scathing US rant as President Donald Trump continues to try and thwart Beijing aggression in the region amid ASEAN summit talks this week.
The US lambasted China's intimidation in the South China Sea where resource rich waters and important shipping lanes have provoked President Xi Jinping to enforce Beijing's controversial Nine-Dash line claim despite political fallout with Asian neighbours and its contradiction of international law. Speaking at the 35th ASEAN summit this week in Thailand, Washington National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien slammed Beijing, becoming one of many key US figures to call out China on the world stage. He said: “Beijing has used intimidation to try to stop ASEAN nations from exploiting the offshore resources, blocking access to $2.5trillion (£2trillion) of oil and gas reserves alone

China's first domestically-built aircraft carrier officially enters service
China has officially commissioned its first domestically-built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, a significant step forward in Chinese President Xi Jinping's ambitions for the country to field a world-class navy.
Xi attended the commissioning ceremony in the southern province of Hainan Tuesday, according to state-run media, where the Shandong finally entered service as part of the People's Liberation Navy.
According to state-run news agency Xinhua, Xi presented a Chinese flag and a certificate with the ship's official name to the ship's captain and political commissar.
The Shandong, which uses conventional rather than nuclear propulsion, is the second carrier in the Chinese fleet. China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, a retrofitted Soviet-era vessel, was purchased from the Ukrainian government in 1998.
Both the Liaoning and the Shandong use ski-jump style ramps at the end of the flight deck to launch planes, a comparatively older technology compared to the United States Navy's preferred catapult technology.

Aircraft launched by catapults can get airborne quicker and with greater quantities of fuel and ammunition, giving them an advantage over Chinese planes, which rely on their own power when lifting off from ski-jumps.
The aircraft carrier's name was officially announced on Tuesday. Before then, it had been only known as the Type 001A. Both of China's aircraft carriers, the Shandong and the Liaoning, are named after coastal provinces close to Beijing.
According to Peter Layton, visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute, the Liaoning was intended to act as more of a training vessel, whereas the Shandong is likely to be deployed in combat missions, positioning China alongside a select number of countries with global naval capabilities, including Russia, France, the US, and the United Kingdom.
'World class force'
The official launch of the carrier comes just a month after Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe told his US counterpart Mark Esper that Washington must stop flexing its muscles in the South China Sea.
Naval competition between the two countries has increased in recent years, amid a sweeping Chinese moderation drive that has seen Beijing launch more submarines, warships, amphibious vessels and auxiliaries since 2014 than the entire serving navies of Germany, India, Spain, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
China has the second largest military budget in the world, behind only the US. Speaking at a mass naval parade in the South China Sea in April 2018, Xi said the People's Liberation Navy needed to become a world-class force.
US Navy Surfaced 3 Submarines to Warn China
Long-range heavy b0mbers are some of the best forces for crisis stability. B0mbers are powerful, mobile and visible, perfect for signaling strength and intent.
On the other hand, the U.S. Navy’s submarine-launched cru!se miss!les are less effective, even counterproductive for crisis stability, because they’re invisible most of the time.
S L C M could contribute to the instability. The opponent’s anxieties might be magnified by the ability of S S G N or cru!se miss!le submarines to posture in stealth nearby.”
But one instance when the US Navy’s Ohio-class S S G N actually did help stabilize a crisis back in 2010, a feat mostly lost to history.
“In July 2010, three S S G N surfaced nearly simultaneously in Western Pacific and Indian Ocean waters, allegedly to signal U.S. displeasure over Chinese m!ss!le tests in the East China Sea.”
Major m!ss!le tests are potentially provocative and destabilizing. America’s intent in the aftermath of the Chinese tests was to signal U.S. strength with just the right amount and kind of potential force.
Submarines seemed to fit the bill, as if Washington were saying to Beijing, “Sure, you might surprise us with your m!ss!les. But we remember we have plenty of m!ss!les of our own and they’re not far from you.”

China to open a DRONE FACTORY in Saudi Arabia

China to open a drone factory in Saudi Arabia
China will construct a new facility to produce unmanned aerial vehicles in Saudi Arabia, following a recent visit from Saudi King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud Salman.
The King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia’s national center for all things science and tech, signed a partnership with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. on March 16, reported the South China Morning Post.
The new facility is part of a $65 billion deal signed between the Saudi monarch and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting in Beijing to promote stronger ties between the two nations.
CASC produces China’s CH-4 UAV, a drone similar to the U.S. Air Force’s General Atomics MQ-1 Predator. Saudi Arabia, which already operates CH-4 drones, has expressed a desire to grow its fleet. In addition to expanding the Saudi fleet, the new facility can operate as a hub for manufacturing and servicing for other CH-4 operators in the Middle East, including Egypt, Iraq and Jordan.
The CH-4 can carry AR-1 missiles, capable of hitting soldiers, tanks and small boats within 1.5 meters of the target. The Saudi facility will be CASC’s third CH-4 factory outside of China, with facilities in Pakistan and Myanmar.
In 2014, a deal fell through between the two nations when the kingdom sought China’s DF-21D “carrier killer” ballistic missile.
“The DF-21 deal was turned down as a result of strong opposition in the international community amid the Iran nuclear crisis in the region,” Macau-based military observer Antony Wong Dong told the South China Morning Post. “Beijing may want to use the CH-4 drone as a substitute project in a bid to please an old friend.
