Biserica fortificată CÂRȚA Fortified Church (Harghita, Transylvania, Romania)

The Fortified Roman Catholic Church ”The Assumption of the Virgin” is situated at the end of a rocky promontory who dominates the valley of Olt river in the Ciucul de Sus area and separates the villages of Cârţa and Ineu.
The church and the fortified wall were built at the beginning of the 15th century.
The Church of Cârta is probably the best fortified church in Szeklerland. The wall is 8 m high, 2 m wide and it is equipped with a superb covered guard road, unique between Szekler fortified churches. The wall has an oval shape and is fortified with embrasures and one tower (the bell tower). The village cemetery having some old funeral monuments is situated at the west of fortified enclosure, being accesible by a ”new” gate made in the wall at the end of the 18th century. The main entrance (in the east, under the tower) was reinforced in 1720 with a short wall with embrasures. In the next centuries more floors were added to the initial bastion, forming the actual bell-tower.
The original church was built in Gothic style at the beginning of the 15th century. In the 18th century the church was heavily modified constructively and stylistically. It remains with the original Gothic style only the space of the altar (the presbytery), the rest being modified in Baroque style. It was build a transept, the southern side (with the statue of St. Anton de Padova) being also a way of acces, and the northern side a smaller altar. The central personage of the main altar is the Holy Virgin Mary, who also gives the church name. The name of the church is Nagyboldogasszony, and the translation Assumption of the Virgin don't gives us the full meaning. The north side transept houses the old altar (before 1920) of the church and a medieval font, carved in stone. The main personage of this old altar is, of course, the Holy Virgin, accompanied by saints Stephen and Ladislau. The western choir is supported on pilasters and 10 wooden pillars decorated with popular motifs. The organ was made in the workshop of the great craftsman Angster József in 1893.
A rămas în stilul gotic original doar spațiul altarului, restul fiind modificat in stil baroc.

Biserica Sfânta Cruce - Holy Cross Church - Szent Kereszt-templom (Miercurea Ciuc, Romania)

The Catholic Church of the Holy Cross (more correctly, perhaps, the Ascension of the Holy Cross) is a historic monument located in the central area of the city. The construction of the church began in 1751 when the village of Miercurea Ciuc, having several hundred inhabitants, was given the status of parish. The church was completed in 1758, in 1771 the chapel of St. John Nepomuk was added and was sanctified in 1784. In the the porch (the main entrance) is the statue of St. Anton de Padua. Inside the church is the main altar made in Baroque style in a mixed technique (the cross, the bas-relief of Golgotha and painting). Next to side walls are the statues of the Holy Virgin and of Saint Ladislau (1040-1095, the king who finalised the Christianization of Hungary). On the pulpit is the Turul Bird, an important symbol in Hungarian mythology. On the northern wall, oposite to the porch, is the chapel with the statue of John Nepomuk (priest and Christian martyr in the second half of the 14th century). The church holds two valuable relics, namely a crucifix from the time of Mateia Corvinus (circa 1470), as well as the book of the Congregation of Mary, printed at the Franciscan Monastery of Sumuleu-Ciuc before 1731. The city developed at the beginning of the 20th century the church becomes too small, but the dream of the Catholic believers in Miercurea Ciuc to have a new church becomes true only a century later, in 2003 the magnificent Millennium Church (or the Church with Angels) being finalized.
Csíkszereda legrégebbi római katolikus temploma a Szent Kereszt-templom egyike a város XVIII. századból fennmaradt épületeinek, Románia műemléklistáján a HR-II-a-B-12735 sorszámon szerepel.

Landmark Modernist Church in Transylvania
Kos Karoly was the leading architect of the Hungarian Romantic School which was inspired by traditional Transylvanian village architecture as well as the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements in Western Europe. His beautiful Calvanist Cock Church in Cluj/Kolozsvar was completed in 1914. Kos designed everything in this church, including the light-fittings with a cock motif symbolising St. Peters denial of Christ. Photos taken by me on June 25th, 2009.

Catedrala catolică Sfântul Mihail - St. Michael's Cathedral (Alba Iulia, Transylvania, Romania)
Enable English subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește !
The Cathedral of St. Michael, located in the Alba Carolina Fortress in Alba Iulia is the most valuable monument of Romanesque architecture in Transylvania. The current cathedral was built between 1246-1291 (the same time as Notre-Dame de Paris) on the ruins of an old cathedral built in the early eleventh century by King Stephen I of Hungary, and partly destroyed by the Tartar invasion in 1242. The cathedral, originally built in the late Romanesque style, it was subsequently extended with elements Gothic, Renascentist and Baroque. It would be the oldest and longest (93 m) cathedral in the country. Basilica consists of three naves, a transept in the east and three towers in the west.On both sides of the apse of the main altar are two smaller altars, apses side, starting from the transept. The southern part of the transept (now in renovation) housed sarcophagi stone of Iancu (John) Hunyadi (prince of Transylvania, rescued Belgrade in 1456) and other family members, while in the north of the transept, in the chapel of St. Anne, are the sarcophagi of John (II) Zápolya Sigismund (1540-1571), first prince of Transylvania and king of Hungary) and Poland Isabella (Isabella Jagiello, 1519-1559). The cathedral was built in the late Romanesque - early Gothic style using stone blocks taken from the ancient Roman castrum. In the Renaissance time, the cathedral was extended on the eastern side with Lászai Chapel (containing the altar of Christian Souls) in 1512 and Varday chapel in 1524. The Cathedral still retains traces of the bombing of 1849, when the city was besieged by Hungarian revolutionaries. In 1877 it was equipped with an organ in Gothic style, with 2209 tubes. From the beginning (eleventh century) the building served as the cathedral for the Diocese of Transylvania, but in 1565, after entering of the Reformation in Transylvania, was taken over by Protestant (Calvinists and Unitarians) which removed paintings, altars, organ and other parts. He returned to Catholic worship in 1716. For 900 years, it was suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa, and from 1930 to 1991 of the Bucharest. Holy See in 1932, changing its name in the Diocese of Alba Iulia, and in 1991 raised it to an independent archbishopric.
Catedrala Sf.
The church in Daia, a village in southeastern Transylvania, south of the Odorheiu Secuiesc (Harghita County), was built and painted several stages during the 12th-19th centuries. The massive spread in Transylvania of the Protestant reform at the beginning of the 16th century makes the church and the whole area pass to the reformed worship, and so remain. Although the Protestant uses of those times were to cover or destroy mural paintings, the church of Daia stands out by preserving them, not even covered. The traces of paintings in the fresco can be seen on the walls: Saint George, the legends of Saint Ladislau and the ship led by Pope and the Roman-German Emperor. Instead, the ceiling of the sanctuary preserves a remarkable and unusual (for churches) Renaissance-style painting with coat of arms dating back to 1500. The painted coat of arms are either of a family type (Lénárd Barabási, the vice-voivode of Transylvania; the Arpadian Dynasty; King Ladislaus II Jagello of Hungary), cities (Cluj or Sighisoara, Sibiu and Brasov) and ethnicities (Saxons and Szeklers). Our exceptional guide was Fülöp Szabolcs, the pastor of the church. The musical background of the video is created by the most prominent Protestant composers of all time, namely Georg Friedrich Händel (Messia Oratorio) and Johann Sebastian Bach (Toccata in D Minor).
MĂNĂSTIREA FRANCISCANĂ DIN ȘUMULEU CIUC ǀ FRANCISCAN MONASTERY IN SUMULEU CIUC

Castelul Huniazilor (The Hunyad castle)
Creator clip EM
The Hunyad Castle (Romanian: Castelul Huniazilor or Castelul Corvineştilor, Hungarian: Vajdahunyad vára) is a castle in Transylvanian Hunedoara, present-day Romania. Until 1541 it was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, and after the Principality of Transylvania.
It is believed to be the place where Vlad III of Wallachia (commonly known as Dracula) was held prisoner for 7 years after he was deposed in 1462.
The castle is a relic of the Hunyadi dynasty. In the 14th century, the castle was given to John Hunyadi Serb, or Sorb by Sigismund king of Hungary as severance. The castle was restored between 1446 and 1453 by his grandson John Hunyadi. It was built mainly in Gothic style, but has Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements. It features tall and strong defense towers, an interior yard and a drawbridge. Built over the site of an older fortification and on a rock above the small river Zlasti, the castle is a large and imposing building with tall and diversely colored roofs, towers and myriad windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings.
As one of the most important properties of John Hunyadi, the castle was transformed during his reign. It became a sumptuous home, not only a strategically enforced point. With the passing of the years, the masters of the castle had modified its look, adding towers, halls and guest rooms. The gallery and the keep - the last defense tower (called Ne boisa = Do not be afraid), which remained unchanged from Iancu de Hunedoara's time, and the Capistrano Tower (named after the Franciscan monk from the castle court) are some of the most significant parts of the construction. Other significant parts of the building are the Knights' Hall (a great reception hall), the Club Tower, the White bastion, which served as a food storage room, and the Diet Hall, on whose walls medallions are painted (among them there are the portraits of Matei Basarab, ruler from Wallachia, and Vasile Lupu, ruler of Moldavia). In the wing of the castle called the Mantle, a painting can be seen which portrays the legend of the raven from which the name of the descendants of John Hunyadi, Corvinus came.
In the castle yard, near the chapel built also during Vlad The Third's ruling, is a well 30 meters deep. The legend says that this fountain was dug by twelve Turkish prisoners to whom liberty was promised if they reached water. After 15 years they completed the well, but their captors did not keep their promise. It is said that the inscription on a wall of the well means you have water, but not soul. Specialists, however, have translated the inscription as he who wrote this inscription is Hasan, who lives as slave of the giaours, in the fortress near the church.
In February 2007, Hunyad Castle played host to the British paranormal television program Most Haunted Live! for a three-night live investigation into the spirits reported to be haunting the castle.
