Today we are going to one of the main attractions of the New Zealand West Coast, the Franz Josef Glacier. Although we do have a heli-hike planned, the weather is too bad for any flights onto the glacier today – a common occurrence that you should prepare for if going to Franz Josef. However, we found one of the great rainy day activities for Franz Josef Glacier: the Glacier Hot Pools.
The Glacier Hot Pools in Franz Josef are surrounded by native rainforest and consist of three main hot pools, all with names written in Maori. Even the spring water used in the pools have a Maori legend behind them. The main pools vary in temperatures between 36 – 40 degrees Celsius. We have 90 minutes to enjoy these popular New Zealand hot pools.
After relaxing in these Franz Josef hot pools we move onto our own private pool, which is down a rainforest walkway. Here we have a small hot pool and shower/changing area to ourselves surrounded by magnificent forest. It’s the perfect place to relax and talk about our upcoming adventures here in Franz Josef on the South Island West Coast.

This is it! Today the weather looks good to go do some heli-hiking on Franz Josef Glacier!
We get geared up at the Franz Josef Glacier Guides base then a quick walk through the rainforest brings us to the heli pad for our Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike! We get inside the helicopter at Franz Josef and away we go to the Franz Josef Glacier!
We get incredible views of the Franz Josef Glacier Valley before landing on the Franz Josef Glacier itself. Here, our guide is going to take us over, under and through the Franz Josef Glacier.
The Franz Josef Glacier Tour allows us to walk along crevasses and through narrow ice corridors all while learning so much about the Franz Josef Glacier which is one of the most accessible glaciers in the world.
Franz Josef Glacier is ever-changing so the heli-hike tours are always going to be different with our guide having to create new and safe paths for each tour group.

Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike | Fox Glacier, New Zealand | Wild Kiwi
Ticking off a massive New Zealand bucket list moment - the Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike. We took a helicopter to the base of Fox Glacier and hiked through the ice, climbing through ice caves and squeezing our way through cracks in the ice. Such an incredible day!
We also jumped onto to quad bikes and drove through rainforest, mud and glacier fed waters - what a day!

WESTCOAST IS ALWAYS THE BEST COAST!!!! This is Franz Josef cute tiny town situated on the westcoast region in the south island of New zealand.
You can do so many nice activities like hot pools, some nice tracks through rainforest, Heli hike to the glacier, Nice restaurant (king tiger!!!), Cinema!!! well A LOT

Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Ice Explorer tour from helipad to helipad. It can be quite tiring if you are not used to walking for about 1 hour everyday few days or running for about 30 minutes. A good idea to prepare for this trip is to walk every 2 days for a couple of weeks to get used to walking.
