Laxenburg and Mayerling - Austria HD Travel Channel
Laxenburg is today one of the many recreation areas in Vienna.
Besides a large English style landscape park, the castle Franzensburg is a popular tourist destination. Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth, called Sisi spent many weeks in this idyllic surroundings. Also two of their four children werw born here.
Originally Mayerling Castle was in the possession of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey before it was taken over by Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, son of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth and converted into a hunting lodge.
Presumably he committed suicide here together with Mary Vetsera on January,30 1889. After that a church was erected in place of the living rooms and converted the castle into a cloister.

Neben einem weitläufig, im englischen Stil angelegten Landschaftspark, ist die Franzensburg ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel. Kaiser Franz Joseph I und Kaiserin Elisabeth, genannt Sisi, verbrachten viele Wochen in dieser idyllischen Umgebung. Auch zwei ihrer vier Kinder, wurden hier geboren.
Ursprünglich war Schloss Mayerling im Besitz des Stiftes Heiligenkreuz, ehe es von Thronfolger Rudolf, dem Sohn von Kaiser Franz Joseph und Kaiserin Elisabeth übernommen und zum Jagdschloss umgebaut wurde.
Vermutlich verübte er am 30. Januar 1889 hier zusammen mit Mary Vetsera Selbstmord. Daraufhin wurde an Stelle der Wohnräume eine Kirche errichtet und das Schloss in ein Kloster umgewandelt.

Schlosspark Laxenburg Wien - Castle Gardens Laxenburg Vienna
Laxenburg is situated about 15 km south of Vienna. The historical importance of the village “Lachsendorf” has its roots in the 13th century and it was already in 1388 under the reign of duke Albrecht III that Laxenburg became a “Marktgemeinde” (a special kind of village in Austria). Even in these days, thanks to the vicinity of Schönbrunn castle, Laxenburg was the preferred residence during spring and summer of the imperial family.
It was not only the castle that grew but also the village of Laxenburg. The emperor and his court were among the guests and brought aristocracy and high society to Laxenburg. Courtly life reached its peak in the 18th century, at the time of Maria Theresia: performances of the Vienna “Hofburgtheater”, entertainment and show tournaments determined social life.
The castle grounds are without any doubt the heart of Laxenburg. Laxenburg castle is one of the most impressing in castles in Europe. Its castle grounds are considered to be a showpiece as far as it concerns the horticulture of the 18th/19th century. It was Maria Theresia together with her grand-son, emperor Franz who were responsible for the expansion of the park to 280 hectares. The gardens are decorated in a lovely and fanciful way. In addition to the “blue court” (“Blauer Hof”) there is a high number of buildings of joy, mystical grottos, temples and the medieval tournament site.
The best-known building is certainly the “Franzensburg” (a castle) which was built in the period from 1799 to 1801 and which was completed in 1835. It was emperor Franz II who was responsible for the construction of this reproduction of a medieval knights castle on an artificial island in the middle of the castles pond.
The equipment of these premises is considered to be the Austrian treasure-house. Today one finds a museum there which can be visited.
After her splendid wedding with emperor Franz Joseph, empress Sisi spent her honeymoon in Laxenburg. She loved endless riding-outs through Laxenburgs woods. It was also in Laxenburg castle where her son crown prince Rudolph was born.

Experienced how the Royal Family riding by Tram going to the Castles. Laxenburg castles are imperial palaces and located outside Vienna, in the town of Laxenburg, Lower Austria. The castles became a Habsburg possession in 1333 and formerly served as a summer retreat, along with Schönbrunn palace, for the imperial Habsburg dynasty. Blauer Hof Palace was the birthplace of some members of the royal family, including Crown Prince Rudolf. Another castle nearby is named Franzensburg castle.

Laxenburg egy település Ausztriában, a Mödlingi járásban, Alsó-Ausztria tartományban. Egykor a Habsburg császári család nyári rezidenciájaként szolgált. Főleg Blaue Hof nevű kastélyáról, a kastélyparkról és a Franzensburgról nevezetes. Az osztrákok kedvelt kirándulóhelye.
Területe II. Albert osztrák herceg kora, 1333 óta a Habsburgok tulajdona volt. Itt építették fel vadász- és pihenőkastélyukat. Itt halt meg III. Albert 1395. augusztus 29-én. A település, amely a kastély körül kialakult, 1388-ban mezővárosi rangra emelkedett. A parkot a 17. században Lodovico Burnacini bővítette.[1] A várat a törökök 1683-ban lerombolták, azonban már 10 év múlva újjáépült, I. Lipót idején.[2] A császár és udvara maga után vonzotta a nemességet is. Az udvari élet fénypontját Mária Terézia idejében érte el a 18. században: a bécsi Burgtheater előadásai, szórakozás, versenyek határozták meg a társadalmi életet. A kastélypark a 18. - 19. századi kertépítő művészet egyik legszebb példája. Mária Terézia és unokája, II. Ferenc császár a park területét 280 hektárral megnövelték.
Látnivalói:
Régi kastély
A Régi kastély (németül Altes Schloss) a nagyméretű kastélypark déli részén áll. Ezen a helyen korábban egy vizivár állt, amelyet a 14. században építettek és amelyet VI. Károly (1685 – 1740) nyári rezidenciaként használt.
A „Kék udvar”
A barokk „Kék udvar” (németül Blaue Hof vagy „Új kastély” (németül Neues Schloss) 1710 körül épült, Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt tervei alapján. I. Ferenc József császár és Erzsébet királyné itt töltötték 1854-ben a mézesheteiket. Négy gyermekük közül kettő, Gizella (1856-1932) és Rudolf (1858-1889) a laxenburgi kastélyban születtek.
Udvari templom
Az udvari templom barokk stílusú, 1693 és 1726 között épült.
Franzensburg
II. Ferenc császár tavat építtetett szigetekkel, barlangokkal és hidakkal és megépíttette 1799 és 1835 között a középkori várat mintázó Franzensburg (magyarul helyenként Ferenc-vár) nevű kerti lakot. A kastélytól híd vezet a tornatérre, onnan a vízeséshez és egy további, oroszlánokkal díszített híd visszafelé.
A park legismertebb épülete a Franzensburg Kastély 1799 és 1835 között épült. II. Ferenc császár egy középkori lovagvár mintájára építtette a park tavának közepén kialakított mesterséges szigeten. A Franzensburg múzeumként működik, melyet ma is Ausztria kincsesházaként emlegetnek. Pompás esküvőjük után itt töltötte mézesheteit Sisi császárné és Ferenc József császár. Köztudott, hogy a császárné szívesen lovagolt ki a Laxenburgi erdőbe. A Laxenburgi kastélyban született Rudolf koronaherceg is.
