A quick visit to Macedonia (Skopje and Ohrid)
Country 3 of 9 in our tour Treasures of the Balkans with Insight Vacations.
We started in Skopje, Macedonia, staying overnight to see the famous square full of memorials and statues. Via the stone bridge, we walked across to get to the Old Bazaar, which is full of restaurants, cafes and shops. We also visited the famous Ottoman-era Mosque Mustafa Pasha's Mosque as well the Church of the ascension of Jesus, which is an Orthodox Church.
The next day, we drove south to see Ohrid, Macedonia to enjoy the sceneries of the Ohrid lake, explore the Old Town, and have a nice Macedonian lunch with stunning views of the lake.

On March 1st, 1941 the German Army crossed Danube River and entered Bulgaria. Later the same day Bulgaria was forced to sign the Tripartite Pact and become ally of Germany, Italy and Japan. By April 18th the German army conquered Yugoslavia and Greece. In May Germany returned Trace (part of Northern Greece) and Macedonia back under Bulgarian administration. Trace and Macedonia were territories lost by Bulgaria during the WWI. This archival footage shows how the Bulgarian troops were welcomed in the town of Ohrid, Macedonia in May 1941.

Shopping and Eating in Ohrid | How Cheap is Macedonia?
Let's go on a shopping quest to find out how cheap or expensive Macedonia is!
Everything is relative ofcourse. Things may appear cheap to tourists from western countries, but may actually be expensive in relation to local income.
We check the cafes and markets. We buy Rakia and a local specialty.
In this video we mostly shop in Ohrid, which has slighty higher prices due to it's popularity by tourists.
In Prilep we bought the Rakia. The home made Rakia is way stronger than the store bought version.
We did not buy bananas, because they are very expensive in the Balkans.

Ohrid, North Macedonia: I decided to have a day trip from Skopje to go see a famous lake town in the south of Europe called Ohrid. I didn't know what to expect, but then I found that it is full of things to do and see: the church of St. Sophia and many others, Samuel's Fortress and so on. Plus, the beautiful old town of Ohrid has a really warm feeling and an amazing panoramic view over the lake. Really, the first impressions of North Macedonia are that it is incredibly beautiful and that it's a hidden gem in Europe!
During this solo travel to Norh Macedonia, from Skopje to Ohrid, I was amazed by this country and I'm sure that one day I'll be back!

Macedonian movie from 1954 - Ohrid is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid in the Republic of Macedonia.
Ohrid is notable for having once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and is referred to as the Macedonian Jerusalem. The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant.
In 1980, town Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In the 10th century Ohrid was the capital of the first Macedonian Slavic State, the Kingdom of Tsar Samuel (976-1014):
In 969 a conflict between the Byzantine Empire and the state of Kiev occurred. During the most severe conflicts between the Bulgarians, Byzantine and Russians, the Bulgarian Czar Peter died. His death in Macedonia was used as an excuse to start-up for a liberation resurrection. From the very beginning of the uprising incited by the sons of a Slav prince Nikola: David, Moses, Aaron and Samuel, the town of Ohrid and its surroundings were in the very centre of the tumults. The uprising started in 969 and quickly stretched out throughout the territory of the former Sklavinia (province) Berzitia. This territory and other neighbouring regions were freed from the Bulgarian rule. The former Macedonian sclavinias (provinces) were united into a Macedonian Slavic state known as Samuel's Empire. Soon he conquered parts of Greece, Epirus, a large part of Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Dalmacia. This was not a Bulgarian state, but an independent Macedonian State with a capital in Ohrid, Macedonia, not in Preslav, Bulgaria where the Bulgarian kings ruled. Samuel was defeated in 1014 by Basil II when the Byzantine army won the battle on Mount Belasica capturing 15,000 of his soldiers. All were blinded, except one in every one hundred, who were left with one eye to lead the rest back to Samuel who escaped death at Belasica. At the site Samuel suffered a stroke and died two days later on October 6, 1014.
