One-Time Slave Pen Now a Museum About the Horrors of Slavery
The award-winning movie 12 Years a Slave is based on the memoir of Solomon Northup, a free black man from New York who was kidnapped in Washington in 1841. It is also the story of the notorious slave trader who sold him into slavery, James Birch. In Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, Birch would become an owner of a slave pen where men, women and children were held before being sold as property. Today, all that remains of the site is a single building -- now home to a civil rights organization and a small museum about slavery. VOA's Deborah Block takes us there.
3D Stereoscopic Photos of a Slave Pen in Alexandria During the American Civil War (1860's)
A collection of animated stereoscopic photographs of a slave pen in Alexandria, Virginia, operated by Price, Birch & Company Dealers in Slaves. It was found abandoned by Union soldiers in May 1861 and was used as a prison for deserters and southern sympathizers throughout the rest of the Civil War. The photos are attributed to a photographer working for Mathew Brady.

ODI: Triumph of Freedom: Slavery, Emancipation, and the Civil War in the DC - Gibbs - 9/18/12
The Government of the District of Columbia invited Gallaudet University to participate in a year-long celebration of the District of Columbia Emancipation Compensatory Act of 1862. This Act of Congress, signed by President Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago during the Civil War (1861-1865), freed slaves in the District of Columbia forever, and was the beginning of the end of slavery in the United States.
On Tuesday, September 18th, Mr. Carroll R. Gibbs, a noted District of Columbia lecturer and historian, speaks to our community about the Triumph of Freedom: Slavery, Emancipation, and the Civil War in the District of Columbia.

Powered by - Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. As permitted by the U.S. Constitution, the District is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the United States Congress and is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the preexisting settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria; however, Congress returned the Virginia portion in 1846. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. Congress created a single municipal government for the whole District of Columbia after the American Civil War.
Washington, D.C., had an estimated population of 632,323 in 2012, the 24th most populous place in the United States. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.7 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.

African American Life in Washington, DC, Before Emancipation
African American Life in Washington, DC, Before Emancipation
As Washington became the focus of abolitionism before the Civil War, antislavery activists argued that the sight of slavery and slave dealers in the nation’s capital disgraced the nation and its ideals. A panel will explore life before the 1862 Compensated Emancipation Act and discuss the “Slavery and Freedom” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Moderated by John W. Franklin of the NMAAHC, panelists include Mark Auslander, Central Washington University; Maurice Jackson, Georgetown University; and NMAAHC curators Nancy Bercaw and Mary Elliott. Presented in partnership with NMAAHC, the DC Commission of African American Affairs, and the DC Commission on Emancipation.
Eyes Wide Open: Understanding Sex Trafficking | Alexandra Lawrence | TEDxDirigo
Sex trafficking is much more prevalent than we realize, a form of modern day slavery kept hidden by coercion and oppression. Alex Lawrence lifts the veil on this global market, and suggests ways that we can help combat its pervasiveness.
An art historian, activist, dancer and filmmaker, Alexandra Lawrence has worked with private collections and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She served as Director of the Lobkowicz Collections in the Czech Republic. Advocating for those exploited in the illegal sex industry through arts and education initiatives, Alexandra supports organizations working with vulnerable populations in Maine, Massachusetts and Southeast Asia. She helped organize two anti-human trafficking film forums in Boston (2010-12) and co-directed a short film with her husband (2016), a contemplation on modern slavery. On the board of directors of the Knox County Homeless Coalition, she has served on the Maine Humanities Council, the Collection Committee at the Portland Museum of Art and on the Harvard Art Museum Fellows Council. Alexandra holds a B.A. from Harvard College and an M.A. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
