Woodbridge Center - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of Woodbridge Center located in Woodbridge Township, NJ from January 3, 2019. This is a wonderfully designed Rouse mall that, while fairly modern looking at first glance, retains much of the retro 1970s architecture that many modern developers spend so much money eliminating. With cool angles, non-linear pathways, lots of wood grain railings and benches, fountains, planters, artsy skylights, this mall was a delight to walk around.

Here is some information from Wikipedia:
Woodbridge Center (also called Woodbridge Mall or Woodbridge Center Mall) is a major two-level, upscale shopping mall located in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 9. The land that Woodbridge Center now stands on used to be the location of the old clay pits in Woodbridge. The mall is owned and managed by Brookfield Properties Retail Group. It features 200 retail establishments and six anchor stores: Boscov's, Dick's Sporting Goods, J. C. Penney, Lord & Taylor, Macy's and Sears. The mall features a fountain, carousel, train ride, and children's play area. Although most malls have a food court, Woodbridge Center's eating establishments are spread throughout the mall with their own individual seating areas and restrooms. Before the coming of the food court, all malls had their eating establishments spread throughout the mall.
The mall's location near Staten Island and the benefit of no sales tax on clothes in New Jersey makes this mall, along with nearby Menlo Park Mall in Edison, a popular choice for New York shoppers. The mall has gross leasable area (GLA) of 1,633,000 square feet, making it the third largest of all shopping malls in New Jersey, behind Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, and Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold Township. It is the 34th largest in the United States.
The mall was developed by the Rouse Company and opened in 1971 with Abraham & Straus, Ohrbach's, and Stern's. In 1985, the mall was expanded with a new wing to include Hahne's. In 1986. J. C. Penney moved from the nearby Menlo Park Mall in Edison, New Jersey. By 1987, the mall got a fresh new look through renovation. The stairwell in the A&S wing next to center court was removed, new flooring was added, new lighting was added, the mall entrances were redone, and the fountains in front of A&S were either changed (the 2nd floor fountain) or removed (the first floor fountains). In 2003, the mall was expanded with a new 100,000-square-foot Galyan's, the chain's first location in New Jersey, which become Dick's Sporting Goods in 2004. Notable department stores that have closed include Hahne's (became Fortunoff now Boscov's), Ohrbach's (which became Steinbach and now is Lord & Taylor), Stern's (now Macy's), Abraham & Straus (now Sears) and Fortunoff (now Boscov's).
In October 2007, the carousel ride was relocated near the J. C. Penney. The train ride was also reconfigured to ensure both rides stay together at the same location. A toddler's play area, Tiny Town, is located near the carousel and train rides. On March 8, 2012, police shot and killed a shoplifter in the Sears wing who had held a woman hostage. On November 14, 2017, Dave & Buster's opened on the upper level by Sears, their first location in New Jersey.

Freehold Kruise Night - August 30, 2001
For many years on the last Thursday of the summer months my wife, my children, and I would wander through Freehold on the Kruise Nights making family memories that we still talk about today.
It was a great way to spend a warm summer's evening. Have dinner and a couple beers in town at one of the sidewalk restaurant tables then take a stroll through town looking at the people, the cars and the motorcycles while singing along to the music that you could always hear in the background.
Wolfman Jerry was usually at the corner of South and Main, in front of the Hall of Records. There's nothing like hearing Bruce Springsteen sing My Hometown on Main Street in Freehold while vintage cars, beautiful motorcycles, and happy people surround you ...felt like a scene right out of American Graffiti!
Twelve days before the United States was attacked on 9-11 and gasoline was $1.35 a gallon I took a walk through Freehold on Kruise Nite with my video camera. Turn up the volume and listen to the rumble of those powerful engines while we take a walk through Freehold on that late summer's evening many years ago.
Here's to hoping that Freehold Kruise Night someday returns!
ElevaTOUR: Dover Elevators at DoubleTree by Hilton Newark Airport
3/10/2019 For my trip to New York City, stayed at the DoubleTree by Newark Liberty International Airport. As such, I also got to visit New Jersey (I've currently visited 13 states including my home state of Arizona). Anyways, it had some cool Dover Elevators (some glass, some just normal with mirrors inside).
More from the trip will be up soon. Stay tuned.

Willowbrook Mall (NJ) - Raw & Real Retail
This is our walkthrough of the Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, NJ from January 22, 2019. This is a big thriving mall in northern New Jersey. The owner of this mall, GGP (now Brookfield Properties) decided at some point to completely rip any vintage character out of this mall. If you look up pictures of this place on google, you'll be greeted with a bunch of old postcards done of this mall back in the 1970s that show off an abundant use of plants, very interesting light fixtures, and lots and lots of color. The mall today stands as a testament to overzealous renovation ideas, as it is nearly pure white now and retain absolutely none of the original charm this mall had. I did not particularly care for this mall.

Here is some info from Wikipedia:
Willowbrook Mall is a one-level shopping center with a partial second floor located in Wayne, New Jersey, United States, in the New York City metropolitan area. It is near the intersection of U.S. Route 46, Route 23 and Interstate 80. The mall opened in 1969 and was expanded or renovated in 1970, 1988, 2006, and 2015. The mall has over 200 retail establishments and a gross leasable area of 1,514,000 ft², and is the fourth-largest shopping mall in New Jersey. The mall anchors are Macy's, Lord & Taylor, Bloomingdale's, Sears, and Dave & Buster's.
With blue laws in effect in neighboring Bergen County, and nearby shopping haven Paramus imposing even stricter Sunday-sales restrictions of its own, Willowbrook Mall has benefited from the spillover of shoppers on Sunday.
Construction of a 100,000-square-foot Ohrbach's store in 1968, joined by a Sears, were the original anchors of what was designed as a two-level, 110-store, indoor shopping mall, encompassing 1,500,000 square feet.
In 1993, Willowbrook Mall became one of the first malls in New Jersey to ban smoking on mall grounds.
Sears is the mall's only remaining original anchor store, while the former Bamberger's store has been open without interruption for the mall's entire existence. Bamberger's was rebranded as Macy's in 1986 after its corporate parent decided to rebrand its entire northeastern United States operation under its namesake marque. Ohrbach's came under new ownership and was rebranded as part of the Steinbach chain, which went out of business in 1996. The building was gutted and expanded for its new tenant Lord & Taylor, which opened in 1997. Stern's closed its doors in 2001 after its parent company, Federated Department Stores, retired the brand; the store was converted to its sister brand, Bloomingdale's, which opened in late 2002.
In 2015, Sears Holdings spun off 235 of its properties, including the Sears at Willowbrook Mall, into Seritage Growth Properties.
In 2015, it was announced that the mall would undergo a two-year $23 million renovation. The renovation entailed new ceilings in the Sears & Macy's wings, an overhaul of the seating in the food court, new flooring throughout the mall, additional seating, and a two-story streetscape theme for the Bloomingdale's wing. In 2017, Sears shrunk its square footage and subleased the unused portion to Dave & Buster's, which opened on Valentine's Day 2018.
The mall and its surrounding access roads and parking areas are prone to flooding in rainstorms. The Passaic River flows near the mall and one of its tributaries, the Pompton River, runs behind it.
In August 2018, Macy's added a Macy's Backstage outlet in a portion of its store. Seritage plans to demolish the Sears Auto Center for a Cinemark movie theater, becoming the second movie theater within the mall area limits (after a 14-screen AMC Theatres, formerly Loews Theatres). P.F Chang's opened in the Bloomingdale's wing of the mall on January 22, 2019.
The mall and its parking lots serve as a transportation hub for the surrounding area: An NJ Transit park and ride facility, opened in 1974, provides bus service to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.
Willowbrook Mall was the site of The Adventures of Pete & Pete special episode, What We Did on Our Summer Vacation (May 17, 1992), in which Ellen's photo booth was located in the parking lot of the mall
