French Lick was originally a French trading post built near a spring and salt lick. A fortified ranger post was established near the springs in 1811. On Johnson's 1837 map of Indiana, the community was known as Salt Spring. The town was founded in 1857. French Lick's post office has been in operation since 1847.
The sulfur springs were commercially exploited for medical benefits starting in 1840. By the later half of the 19th century, French Lick was famous in the United States as a spa town. In the early 20th century it also featured casinos attracting celebrities such as boxer Joe Louis, composer Irving Berlin and gangster Al Capone.

French Lick Day Trip: Resort, Winery, Legend of Dry Hollow
Mom happened upon an event called Legend of Dry Hollow being held for the first time up at The French Lick Resort, so what did we do? Well of course we went! Oct. 28th, 2017 started off with a pretty drive up through the Patoka Lake area, a quick visit inside the lobby of French Lick Resort (gorgeous!), lunch at French Lick Winery (delicious!), and ended the night at the Hollow. Legend of Dry Hollow started a kid and family friendly walk around 6pm, and started a PG-13 one at 8pm. It was cold and quite a walk around, but did we have fun! We describe it some in the video, so stay tuned till the end. It wasn't super scary, but we did get quite a few scares with how well the characters blended in and how spooky the area was in general. There was no moon tonight! I can't wait to see how it evolves over the years. Hopefully, they stick with it! *This one isn't as clear as most of my other videos, because I decided to just use my iPhone for this little trip.
