In the Spotted Cat on Frenchmen Street, New Orleans
On the 2nd day in the Big Easy we have been in the Desperado, our favorite Italian restaurant, and then we strolled through Frenchmen ending up in the Spotted Cat, one of the oldest Jazz clubs in the French Quarter. I could not resist, I had to dance, and Fritz could not resist, he had to shoot me.

A Birthday Party
Louder, Gents! ~traditional New Orleans jazz alive & well
Exactly Like You is a 1930 jazz standard composed by Jimmy McHugh with lyrics by Dorothy Fields. This video could be from a hundred years ago on a typical hot August day in the city that care forgot. I personally can't get enough of this local, uniquely-original Free-style, music; however, there's a growing number of elitists (or however one can describe them) who think there should be volume-controls on instruments played by musicians who perform on the banquettes, bars & clubs, and the streets of New Orleans. Many are long-time wealthy residents of the French Quarter (and other tightly-knit neighborhoods) who simply grew old and became pathetic with their better-than-thou personalities they grew into over time -bless their ignorant, bitter hearts. The other sour-pusses are (some of, but not all) the people who moved to the New Orleans recently (gentrifiers, or however you label them).

They have no idea that loud, free-style music is the status quo in New Orleans; that nobody who truly cares for this City, cares that the music is loud. In short, the naysayers will simply have to get over it or move out (please move, because you are displacing housing needed by local musicians, artists, restaurant & shop workers, etc. --the ones who really keep the gold goose (French Quarter) alive.
Free music has been around since the 1830's beginning around the time of the Congo Square drum circles with hand-made instruments; and in the Tremé where brass bands were born. The French Quarter & Storyville lured tourists and world travelers to this unique music and word was spread around the World. This allowed The City that Care Forgot to become world-famous, prosperous and unique in not only music, but also architecture, cuisine, art, literature, local culture....
Currently the Mayor and City Council are -- wisely -- taking a slow approach to the music naysayers' concerns (albeit, by giving money to their politically-favorite contractors for a time-delaying study of sound levels.) They certainly should put this silly noise ordinance back on a back-burner, where music naysayers have been crying their bogus alligator tears & stewing in their own juices ever since the 1830's (:
Here's some Wiki articles that mention the history of free music in America that began in New Orleans.

The history of jazz is still underway and the street immediately to the scene is French. The streets are dozens of live performances at night when the clubs come together and crowded with many people who want to enjoy the sound and the music flows out of musicians playing every club. I followed the sounds of violins coming out in droves. A young man playing the violin and lonely. To visit walking the streets of pedestrians, including those eyes and stop me playing the right. A plastic bucket on a violin faded away in the dark ensemble of instruments, but the music passion Sanya's words to the French streets are full enough to tell you why it seems that the place is the representative of New Orleans music.

Frenchman Street New Orleans
Walking on Frenchman Street in the Marigny neighborhood on 8/5/11.
Places to see in ( New Orleans - USA ) Faubourg Marigny
Places to see in ( New Orleans - USA ) Faubourg Marigny
The offbeat Marigny district is known for its Cajun bistros, bohemian bars and jazz clubs, especially along Frenchmen Street. Sidewalk musicians and brass bands add a block party vibe to the nighttime Frenchmen Art Market, which sells local artwork and handicrafts. Quieter spots include Washington Square where the lawns are shaded by old oak trees. The Marigny Opera House offers an eclectic program.
The Faubourg Marigny developed as New Orleans’ second suburb in 1806 and was the first historic zoning since the Vieux Carre. The Marigny is a top choice for New Orleanians and visitors looking for great music, fine food and an authentic, historic neighborhood.
Immediately downriver of the French Quarter, the Faubourg Marigny was once the plantation of a Creole bon vivant who made the dice game “craps” popular in America and who dazzled New Orleans by his style and enormous inheritance. After subdividing the property in 1806, it developed gradually with a distinctly European flair and a cosmopolitan mix.
Today’s Marigny is still cosmopolitan; a singles-friendly and artist-friendly neighborhood that people from all over the world have chosen to make their home. Beautiful Creole and Classic Revival cottages that stood abandoned after residents left for the suburbs in the 1950s have been restored and painted in rich golds, brick reds and moss greens.
Historic banks, corner stores and even bakeries have been refurbished as homes and guesthouses, while riverfront warehouses now accommodate artists' studios and performance spaces. Weekends bring shoppers to independent galleries and rummage stores in lower Marigny.
When you have seen and heard enough of Bourbon Street, experience life in New Orleans the way the locals do. With great music and food any day of the week, the Faubourg Marigny has all the life and vivaciousness of a true New Orleans neighborhood.
Located only minutes away from the French Quarter, the Bywater neighborhood has an abundance of traditional architecture and has become a haven for preservationists and do-it-yourself renovators. The area is between the Faubourg Marigny and Holy Cross districts, and it sits atop some of the earliest land grants in the city.
The Bywater is home to some of the city’s trendiest restaurants and bars, many of which also host live music. Area restaurants feature upscale dishes made with local produce, craft cocktails, carefully selected wines, gourmet pizza, po-boys, barbecue and everything in between.
