Every year, since my parents have been married, (so we are talking 38 years here people) my family has gone out to Colorado for a family ski trip. I have been going since I was 7 (they left the younger kiddos at Grandmas, until we could learn) and it has always been my favorite vacation of the entire year.
The Mountain
Back in the day, before nieces and nephews, we would ski at several mountains during the week, (copper, vail, keystone, a-basin, to name a few) and stay in a condo in Frisco. These days, we hang out at Copper for majority of the week and then we spend one day at Vail, because, back bowls.
We choose Copper as our home base for a few reasons.
First, it’s inexpensive. No sugarcoating: skiing is one of the more expensive vacations you can go on. With window prices on lift tickets alone costing upwards of $180 a day, you have to be wise about when you book + where you go. Copper’s ski-in, ski-out lodging is significantly more reasonable than Vail’s or Breck’s. We have also had the best luck finding lift ticket deals for Copper. This year we paid $200 for 5 days of skiing per person. (We paid $160 for just one day at Vail. Worth it. But you can see why we aren’t ripping there all week.)
Second, we love the layout of the mountain. If you look at a map of Copper, it’s set up perfectly for a big group of people with different skill levels, which is exactly what we have. On the west side, you have your green runs. In center, there are primarily blues. And on the east side, you have the Super Bee lift, which takes you to all your black runs + back bowls.
Copper’s layout also allows you to cut across the mountain fairly easily by taking longer runs, which cuts down on the amount of lifts you are taking. In addition to the lifts, it helps with our
big group, because it makes it easier for everyone to split up and meet back up later. My family stays over in the east side by the Super Bee, all of us go out, some ski blues, others go to the blacks, and then we reconvene for lunch.
When We Aren’t Skiing
If it isn’t obvious, my family is pretty into actually being on the mountain and skiing. Most days are first chair, last chair kind of days. However, the lifts close at 4pm, so we like to have fun and go out in the evenings!
Because of the kiddos, we mainly stay on the resort. We shuttle over to center village on copper’s free shuttle, and go to a fun bar or restaurant for a little apres ski. (Did I use that word correctly? Probably not.) We do a little bit of shopping in center village and on some evenings, grab a snack at the mini donut shop or Rocky Mountain Chocolate! We typically go back to the condo to cook dinner, because eating out for 7 days straight with 10 people gets pricey. After dinner, we either just hang out and watch a movie, go to the hottub and watch the snow cats, or take the kiddos back to center village to go ice skating.
Other Things to Do
When we do venture out of the resort, we usually head to Frisco, Dillon or Silverthorne. All 3 of these cities are on the Dillon Reservoir and sort of run together. Frisco has a fun, older downtown with some neat restaurants. Dillon has Lake Dillon, which is always snow covered and beautiful in the winter. Silverthorne has outlet malls and more practical stores, like groceries and ski rental shops.
If you are going to spend a day off the mountain, make sure to check out the city of Breckenridge! Breck gets a lot of attention from out of towners, and rightly so! The town is darling, with tons of cute shops and places to eat. Like every other ski town, it is built right on the resort, so the views aren’t bad either. ;)
One thing we really enjoyed doing this year was going past Breckenridge on Highway 9 to the small city of Alma. It is the highest incorporated city in the US at 10,578 feet and it is just breathtaking! It is tiny tiny, so you won’t get the restaurants or shops that Breck has, but because of the lack of people, you can take in the mountain views without tourists! We drove through, stopped to look at the mountains, flew the drone, and then went to dinner at the Breckenridge Brewery.
Like I said, our ski trip is my favorite trip of the entire year -- there is just something about having all my people in the coolest state, hanging out outside! Nothing better. Have you ever been skiing? If so, where? Tell me all about it in the comments section!

Places to see in ( Breckenridge - USA )
Breckenridge is a Colorado town at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range. It's known for its ski resort, year-round alpine activities and Gold Rush history. The Victorian core of this former mining town is preserved as the Breckenridge National Historic District, running primarily along Main Street, with colorfully painted buildings from the 1880s and '90s housing shops, galleries and restaurants.
Set at the foot of the marvelous Tenmile Range, Breck is a surviving mining town with a vibrant historic district. The down-to-earth vibe is a refreshing change from Colorado's glitzier resorts, and the family-friendly ski runs and gold-nugget history make it Summit County's most atmospheric destination. Regardless of whether it’s snow or shine, the BreckConnect Gondola up to the base of Peak 8 is where the fun begins.
The vast, hulking mountains here rise and fall, merging seamlessly into one another to present a perfect alpine backdrop. Laced with ski runs and hiking trails and stitched together with pine groves, they blaze gold in the morning, glow pink at dusk and fade into a deep shadowy blue as the sky pales then darkens, revealing endless stars best viewed from a frothing hot tub next to the roaring Blue River.

Places to see in ( Steamboat Springs - USA )
Places to see in ( Steamboat Springs - USA )
Steamboat Springs is a city in northern Colorado’s Yampa Valley. It’s home to the Howelsen Hill ski area and the Steamboat ski resort. The latter has 6 peaks including Mount Werner. The city’s geothermal hot springs are said to have therapeutic properties. Near the city center, the long-standing Old Town Hot Springs is equipped with swimming and soaking pools, plus water slides.
Steamboat Springs is typically 3-4 hr away from Denver by car in good winter conditions. If heavy snow, there are a couple of passes (including Rabbit Ears Pass) which become much more difficult and slow going. The most direct route from Denver to Steamboat is I-70 west to Silverthorne. From there, take Highway 9 North to Kremmling where you meet up with US 40. Then drive west on US 40 over Rabbit Ears pass to Steamboat. With no traffic or snow, the drive can be as quick as 2.5 hr.
The Local Airport is only 22 miles from Steamboat (Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) in Hayden, CO). Many major airlines, including Continental, American and Delta, provide direct service from hubs and major cities during the winter, It is only a 30 min flight from Denver on United.
The City of Steamboat Springs provides free municipal bus service year round. Buses arrive approximately every 10 min in the winter and every 20 minutes in the summer. The Steamboat Springs Transit stops along every major route with service from downtown to the mountain condos and ski area.
Alpine Taxi is Steamboat's taxi Service. They provide in-town taxis as well as shuttle service to and from the Yampa Valley Regional Airport (Hayden) and the Denver International Airport. Storm Mountain Express also offers shuttle service to and from Hayden. Steamboat420 offers a free Dispensary Shuttle service. They have pick-up locations in Steamboat Springs, providing free roundtrip rides to a local cannabis dispensary.
The Town of Steamboat Springs is essentially separated into several areas. One is the mountain area (known simply as the mountain or the base area) surrounding the base of the Steamboat Ski Area on Mt. Werner, where there are multiple shops as well as dining and nightlife. The area also includes many hotels, condominiums and rental homes. The area is relatively easy to navigate on foot, but driving can be more difficult.
The other major area is downtown, around 4 miles from the Ski Area. Downtown Steamboat is located along Lincoln Avenue (US 40) and stretches 8-10 blocks between Third Street and Eleventh Street. This is the historic area of town. Shopping, dining and nightlife are here as well. Most of Steamboat's better restaurants are located downtown, and the area is much easier to navigate in a car than the mountain area. Parking on Lincoln Avenue is limited, but there are several parking lots on the numbered side streets.
West Steamboat is west of downtown and houses more locally-oriented businesses (like hardware stores, mechanics, and specialty shops).
Steamboat is long known for its legendary Champagne Powder snow, western heritage, and Olympic Tradition which gives Steamboat the name of Ski Town USA. Steamboat is also known for its reputation as a breeding ground for US Winter Olympic Athletes, who often participate in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club that practices and trains athletes on Howelsen Hill. Howelsen Hill is Steamboat's second, smaller ski area, and is located near the downtown area. Howelsen Hill is the oldest continuous operating ski area in Colorado. Tickets here are much cheaper than at the Steamboat Ski Area, but terrain is also much smaller and includes one lift that operates on weekends, a pomma, a halfpipe, and several runs.
Notable Steamboat sites:
Fish Creek Falls Waterfall located in the town of Steamboat Springs. These falls are also pictured on the label of Coors Beer.
Routt National Forest
Flat Top Mountains
Continental Divide Trail
Steamboat Lake State Park
Stagecoach State Park
Strawberry Park Hot Springs Natural hot springs just outside of Steamboat.
Yampa River Core Trail A beautiful paved trail that follows the Yampa River through downtown Steamboat Springs.
Howelsen Hill The oldest continuous operating ski area in Colorado.
