Fukushima Restoration Plan: Abe Sees Fukushima Progress!!!
Radiation risks are being swept under the rug. That restoration plan voluntarily chooses to ignore the risks for people to be living in a contaminated environment, not differentiating between the external and internal exposures and their sure harmful consequences to people health. Not to mention the ongoing incineration of contaminated waste in the Fukushima Prefecture 19 municipal incinerators, continuously redistributing radioactive nanoparticles into the environment. All done in the name of economic reconstruction!
Cabinet to approve Fukushima restoration plan
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited Fukushima Prefecture to inspect the progress of restoration following the 2011 nuclear accident.
Abe visited a machinery parts manufacturer in Minamisoma City on Saturday.
The government and Fukushima Prefecture have been working to create a cluster of robotics' companies in the city.
The president of the manufacturer told the prime minister that he hopes the robotics industry will help revitalize the local economy.
Abe responded that the state-of-the-art robot testing facilities that had been built in the city should attract companies from around the world, and that he wants the region to develop around them.
Abe later visited the town of Kawamata, where an evacuation order is expected to be lifted next March.
He ate fermented natto soybeans manufactured in the town using local products.
Abe told reporters after the inspection that his government intends to help people from areas where the evacuation order will be lifted with housing and rebuilding their lives.
He also said his cabinet will approve a plan before the end of the month to accelerate Fukushima's restoration. He said it includes partial governmental funding for decontamination in non-entry zones.

STORYLINE:
Japan's crippled nuclear plant has a new leak of highly radioactive water entering the Pacific Ocean after a storage tank overflowed, a plant operator said on October 3rd 2013.
The Tokyo Electric Power Company official said that workers detected the water dripping from the top of a tank when they were patrolling the site the night before.
TEPCO estimates 430 litres (110 gallons) of water leaked outside a concrete barrier surrounding the tank and four others.
TEPCO believes the water reached the sea via a ditch next to the barrier.
(The contaminated water) went into the drain and we cannot deny the possibility of it having reached the ocean, said TEPCO official Masayuki Ono.
Massive amounts of water have been used to cool the reactors and fuel rods since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami destroyed the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant's cooling system.
Leaks of the contaminated water are causing concerns over the plant's stability.
***
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano was in Tokyo on October 10th for talks with the Japanese government on the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.
Amano met with Shunichi Tanaka, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) over updates on countermeasures against contaminated water leakage at the facility.
The Japanese NRA had promised the IAEA in an earlier meeting to cooperate with the UN nuclear agency to monitor the ocean in order to find out the amount of contamination that has spread into the sea near Fukushima.
Amano promised that the IAEA will cooperate with Japan on measuring the levels of radioactivity in the ocean and that it is extremely important to thoroughly discuss the methods that need to be taken.
Ocean monitoring is extremely important so the IAEA would very much like to cooperate with you as much as possible, said Amano.
Japan's striken nuclear power plant has raised concerns not only domestically but also internationally.
The NRA have faulted plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) for sloppiness in its handling not only of the water management but also in other daily operations with repeated mishaps on radioactive water leakage in less than a month.
While Japan has been monitoring the seawater for levels of radioactivity, it is yet to decide what methods should be best in order to regain confidence in safety of the ocean around Fukushima.

Fishermen face uncertain future after new leaks from Fukushima nuclear plant
Japanese fishermen in the Iwaki fishing ports had hoped to resume test catches next month following favourable sampling results after two years - those plans have now been scrapped after news of another tank leak at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.
All fisheries operations in Fukushima have been suspended indefinitely after a 300-ton leak on Monday - the fifth and most serious from a tank since the March 2011 disaster.
It remains unclear what the environmental impact from the contamination will be on sea life.
At Yotsukura Port, the fishing boat Ebisu-maru has been part of the sampling trips since the 2011 disaster.
Local fisherman Fumio Suzuki, 47, said TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Compnay - who run the plant) had repeatedly failed to acknowledge problems that it could have foreseen.
The operators (of the plant) are reacting too late every time in whatever they do, he said.
People in the fishing business have no choice but to give up. There are many (fishermen) who have mostly given up already, he added.
Many local fisheries have lost confidence in reassurances from the operators of the nuclear plant, and fisherman and researchers continued to survey the sea life on their own.
Sampling results from over 170 types of fish showed 40 percent of fish testing positive to signs of contamination.
Forty-two types of fish are still off limits, including fat greenling, flounder, and sole.
However, Nobuyuki Hatta, the Director of the Fukushima Prefecture Fisheries Research Centre, said test results had been positive in the lead up to the leaks.
The monitoring data taken from the sample fish shows there are less and less fish that show signs of radiation levels over the limits, he said.

Fukushima News 1/9/15: Fukushima NPP Goes Green; Mount Sakurajima Eruption Preparation
TEPCO to provide more support for renewable energy
Nuclear & Energy Jan. 9, 2015 - Updated 04:19 UTC-5
Tokyo Electric Power Company says it will support Fukushima Prefecture's plan to promote renewable energy as a pillar of reconstruction from the 2011 disaster and nuclear accident.
TEPCO President Naomi Hirose met economy minister Yoichi Miyazawa on Friday. Hirose said his utility will make efforts to fulfill its responsibility as the company that caused the accident.
Hirose said the utility will renovate a seldom-used transformer substation near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant so it can buy electricity generated from renewable energy sources in the prefecture.
The president of Tohoku Electric Power Company, Makoto Kaiwa, was also at the meeting.
Kaiwa said his company will preferentially buy electricity generated in former evacuation zones in the prefecture.
The utility's service area covers mainly northeastern Japan, including Fukushima and two other prefectures worst-hit by the disaster.
Economy minister Miyazawa said the government will allocate funds to buy battery cells and transmission lines in the draft extra budget for this fiscal year to help introduce green energy sources.

Japan, S.Korea discuss embargo, wartime labor
Biz / TechJan. 8, 2015 - Updated 17:41 UTC-5
Deputy foreign ministers from Japan and South Korea have agreed to deepen ties. But they differed on various issues including South Korea's embargo on fisheries products from Fukushima and other areas.
Japan's Yasumasa Nagamine met South Korea's Ahn Chong-ghee in Seoul on Thursday.
They confirmed plans to launch joint projects in other countries. These would include energy businesses. They also agreed to collaborate on tourism to mark the 50th anniversary of normalization of bilateral ties.
Nagamine asked South Korea to lift the embargo on fisheries products from 8 Japanese prefectures, including Fukushima, as early as possible.
South Korea introduced the embargo out of concerns over contamination from radioactive substances after the nuclear accident in 2011.

More Fukushima rice tainted with cesium
Fukushima Prefecture says it has found rice tainted with radioactive cesium above the tentative government limit from five more farms.
The prefecture said on Friday that the five farms are in the Oonami district of Fukushima City, about 56 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
The highest level of cesium detected was 1,270 becquerels per kilogram. The government's maximum allowable level is 500 becquerels per kilogram.
Earlier this month, the prefectural government found rice samples from a field in the district also containing radioactive cesium above the limit.
Shipments of rice harvested from the area have been suspended by central government since last Thursday.
Fukushima Prefecture subsequently ordered tests on rice samples from all 154 farms in the Oonami district.

Volcanologists on nuclear regulatory panel accepted utility donations
TOKYO, March 3, Kyodo
Two volcanologists involved in judging whether restarted nuclear reactors should be halted due to nearby volcanic activity received 8.1 million yen ($71,000) in donations from utility-linked companies in the past, documents showed Thursday.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority appointed the two, both from Kagoshima University, as part of a six-member panel to check for signs of a major volcanic eruption near Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Sendai plant, which is located in a volcanically active region in southwestern Japan.
The revelation that the two -- professor emeritus Tetsuo Kobayashi and professor Hiroki Miyamachi -- received funds from affiliates of nuclear power plant operators, including Kyushu Electric, may raise suspicions about the panel's decisions, critics said.
TEPCO to create frozen wall soon
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is expected to soon get approval to start underground freezing around its reactors. The measure is aimed at creating a frozen soil wall to cut the amount of groundwater flowing into reactor buildings.
Panel: Fault below Shika reactor may be active
A panel of scientists at Japan's nuclear regulator says a fault under a reactor at the Shika power plant in central Japan could slip in the future.
3,400 survivors of 2011 disaster have since died
The Japanese government says more than 3,400 survivors of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami have subsequently died due to health problems caused by prolonged upheaval.
The Reconstruction Agency compiles data every 6 months on deaths related to the disaster and the ensuing nuclear accident in northeastern Japan.
Agency officials say that by the end of last September, 4-and-a-half years after the disaster, they had documented 3,407 deaths.
The largest number was in Fukushima Prefecture, where the damaged nuclear plant is based -- 1,979 residents, representing 58 percent of the total.
The officials say 1,876 people or 55 percent died within 3 months of the disaster.
Since March 2014, 156 people have died, most of them in Fukushima Prefecture.
The officials say that as of February 12th, as many as 174,471 people are still in temporary housing or living in relatives' homes. The figure is down 50,706 from last March.
156,234 people are living in prefabricated housing or apartments rented by central and local governments. 18,237 people live with their relatives and acquaintances, down 316 from last year.
43,139 people originally from Fukushima Prefecture are living different prefectures.
Local governments have completed only half the planned public housing for people affected by the disaster, and just 30 percent of residential developments on land lots in higher locations.
Some communities continue to suffer from declining populations.
In Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures, 12 communities have reported population declines of more than 10 percent. More than half said their numbers are down by 20 percent or greater.

Fukushima Kids with Yumi Kikuchi
On today's podcast, Maggie and Nat interview our very inspiring friend Yumi Kikuchi. Fairewinds has been working with Yumi for more than a year now. She encouraged us to send material to the Tokyo Peace Film Festival, which she organized, and we sent our film You are not alone. Yumi also co-sponsored Arnie's trip to Japan in 2012, where he gave the presentation Japan at a Crossroads: Two Futures. Yumi left Japan with her family after the Fukushima Daiichi accident, and currently lives in Hawaii. She founded the Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project (FKHP), usually shortened to Fukushima Kids, and has just returned to Japan where she will be spreading awareness about the project and fundraising. Fukushima Kids aims to host children from Fukushima in Hawaii during school vacations, where they can play outdoors safe from high radiation levels. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of radiation than adults, and we are already seeing signs of thyroid cancer and cysts among children in Fukushima. There are about 300,000 kids living in the Fukushima prefecture, and Yumi is hoping to host 15 kids this first summer.
How can you help
Spread the word about the project, and about the health crisis in Japan. Those in Hawaii can contact Yumi about hosting children or volunteering. Gathering financial support is most crucial to the project right now, with airfare for the kids being the biggest expense.

Fukushima rice to be exported to France
The governor of nuclear disaster-hit Fukushima Prefecture appears likely to soon reach an agreement with a French trading house to export rice to France.
Fukushima Governor Masao Uchibori is starting his 4-day visit to France and Britain on Thursday to promote local produce, including rice, beef, and processed fruit.
He seeks to dispel concern about the safety of food products from Fukushima following the nuclear accident in 2011 and expand its sales channels.
Prefectural sources say Uchibori is likely to reach an agreement to ship to France a locally produced rice variety called Tennotsubu . Rice from Fukushima will be exported to France for the first time.
Sources say the governor is also likely to cement a plan to increase Fukushima's shipments of rice to Britain.
The prefecture exported 19 tons of rice to the country in the fiscal year ending in March 2017.
An official involved in Fukushima trade affairs says the exports will have a significant impact as Britain and France play a central role in passing on information in Europe.

同意せざるを得なかった農家の皆さんの気持ちを思うと胸が痛くなります
There are 10 ranches who rejected the order of killing their cattle animals where those areas have been contaminated by the radioactivity in the evacuation zone, no one should not enter.
Among them, we talked and heard from the Mr. Masami Yoshizawa, the CEO of the The Ranch of Hope, Fukushima.
In Fukushima, more than 1500 cows have been killed already. It is a heartache to think how those farmers felt so hard when they had to agree with the order of killing their cattle animals.
吉沢さんは元々自分の牧場にいた牛以外にも ほかの牧場で飼いきれなくなった牛や人がいなくなった町でさまよう「野良牛」などを救済し飼育しています
350頭 全てが被爆した「売り物」にならない牛たち
In his ranch, he feeds not only his cows, but also other cows from other ranches where they could not continue to operate, or had to leave. Also, other cows includes the ones which become Wild in the town. In total, he takes care of 350 cows, which are all contaminated by the radioactive, no longer for sales in the market.
何故 身の危険を顧みず「売り物」にならない牛たちの面倒を見るのか
原発に対する思いは
未来に対する思いは
Why does he feeds those cows which are prohibited to sell, despites the risk for his own health?
How does he think about the Nuclear Power?
How does he think about the future coming?
うかがったお話の一言一言が胸にささりました
Each word from his talk was very meaningful and even impressive to our minds
