Galena, also called lead glance, is the natural mineral form of lead(II) sulfide. It is the most important ore of lead and an important source of silver.
Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system often showing octahedral forms. It is often associated with the minerals sphalerite, calcite and fluorite.
Galena is the main ore of lead, used since ancient times. Because of its somewhat low melting point, it was easy to liberate by smelting.
In some deposits galena contains about 1–2% silver, a byproduct that far outweighs the main lead ore in revenue. Galena deposits often also contain significant amounts of silver as included silver sulfide mineral phases or as limited solid solution within the galena structure. These argentiferous galenas have long been the most important ore of silver.
Galena deposits are found worldwide in various environments. Noted deposits include those at Freiberg in Saxony; Cornwall, the Mendips in Somerset, Derbyshire, and Cumberland in England; the Madan, Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria; the Sullivan Mine of British Columbia; Broken Hill and Mount Isa in Australia; and the ancient mines of Sardinia. Galena also occurs in North African countries and at Mount Hermon in Northern Israel. In the United States, it occurs most notably in the Mississippi Valley type deposits of the Lead Belt in southeastern Missouri, and in the Driftless Area of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. The economic importance of galena to the early history of the Driftless Area was so great that one of the towns in the region was named Galena, Illinois.
Galena also was a major mineral of the zinc-lead mines of the tri-state district around Joplin in southwestern Missouri and the adjoining areas of Kansas and Oklahoma. Galena is also an important ore mineral in the silver mining regions of Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Montana. Of the latter, the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho was most prominent.
Galena is the official state mineral of the U.S. states of Missouri and Wisconsin; the former mining town of Galena, Kansas takes its name from deposits of this mineral.
Derbyshire in the UK was one of the main areas where galena was mined.
The largest documented crystal of galena is composite cubo-octahedra from the Great Laxey Mine, Isle of Man, measuring 25 cm × 25 cm × 25 cm (10 in × 10 in × 10 in).
Galena belongs to the octahedral sulfide group of minerals that have metal ions in octahedral positions, such as the iron sulfide pyrrhotite and the nickel arsenide niccolite. The galena group is named after its most common member, with other isometric members that include manganese bearing alabandite and niningerite.

Around Kansas Hunting Rocks
How many of you notice this lovely snowflake obsidian pin on my scarf here? Isn't that beautiful? I've always loved snowflake obsidian. I love rocks. Just look at these. These are the ones I found in the junk drawer this morning. Who knows, I picked them up, Jake picked them up, the kids picked them up. Just find cool rocks and stick them in our pockets all the time. While we're talking about hunting season this fall and winter, I thought it was a perfect time to talk about having something that doesn't run usually. It might be a little bit hidden but usually doesn't run away. Let's hunt some rocks.
My longtime friend, Brad Davenport, is constantly posting photos of exquisite rocks he has polished; transforming a simple stone into a work of art. Brad will soon be president of the Topeka Gem and Mineral Society. He shared some tips on rock hunting. The great thing about rock hunting, said Brad, is you can do it almost anywhere. With experience and help, you can start to figure out what is good, bad and ugly, said Brad. I tell folks to pick up a rock that looks like every other rock. Then pick up a rock that looks completely different. Books about geology are most helpful, too.
In addition to books, the Kansas Geological Survey is a great resource providing some of the basic information about rocks that are found in Kansas. For example, of the three types of rock: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, the vast majority at or near the surface in Kansas are sedimentary.
Sedimentary rocks most often formed when sediment and pieces eroded off other rocks are buried then pressed and cemented together. However, they may also be formed from chemical sediment that settles out of water or the remains of plants and animals. Sedimentary rocks are laid down in layers called beds, often one on top of another.
In Kansas, sediment and sedimentary rocks was first deposited along shorelines or on the floors of seas, deltas, or swamps that covered parts of the state off and on for millions of years, up until about 65 million years ago. After a layer of sediment dried, it eventually was buried under younger layers. As the weight from the overlying sediment increased, lower layers were pressed and cemented into solid rock over time. Depending on the type of sediment deposited, different rocks formed; limestone mainly from the mineral calcite that precipitated from water, sandstone mainly from sand, and shale mainly from clay.
Not all rocks found in Kansas formed there. Unusual rocks that were carried or dropped into the state from other places include layers of volcanic ash carried hundreds of miles by the wind, quartzite boulders dragged in by vast sheets of glacial ice, and meteorites that plunged in from outer space.
Rocks are mainly made up of minerals. Most are a mix of minerals. A layer of sandstone, for example, may contain particles of the minerals quartz, calcite, and silica compacted together.
Minerals that occur in Kansas are agate, barite, calcite, dolomite, galena, gypsum, halite, lead, marcasite, opal, sphalerite, I hope I said that correctly, and zinc. Dr. Jake and I had a wonderful time picking up opals in Osborne County with Von Rothenberger a couple of years ago. Get outdoors wherever you are around Kansas and discover the treasures under your very feet.
The Klan in the Coal Mines: Southeast Kansas and the Hooded Order of the 1920s'
College Scholars: Professor James Leiker, History, will present this talk concerning radical politics in rural Kansas from the 1920s to the late 20th century.
The New Klan of the post-World War I era is mostly remembered as a hyper-conservative movement, distinct for its opposition to immigration, Roman Catholicism and communism. Surprisingly, the KKK had progressive roots as well, especially in southeast Kansas' mining districts. Only a decade before, the area was home to radical socialists, anarchists and labor organizers but after 1920 hosted some of the largest Klan chapters in the U.S. The phenomenon of workers turning abruptly from class-based to nativist politics blurs the distinction between Left and Right — and provides lessons about the politics of our own time.

Haunted History in Galena / Jo Daviess County
Exploring Southeast Kansas
While Kansas has a rich history, most Kansans do not connect the history of the state to the mining industry, conflicts between labor and management, or even the Civil War. But if you visit the southeastern corner of the state, and you know where to look, these complex histories await.
This documentary features stories from passionate museum volunteers who fear the loss of the past. In other places, stories are harder to unearth as they involve causes now unpopular or environmental legacies that have consumed entire communities.
The film provides a glimpse at some of the stories of southeastern Kansas as seen through the eyes of a group of JCCC faculty and staff who visited the area in 2015. The trip was cosponsored by the Kansas Studies Institute and the Center for Sustainability at JCCC. Trip leaders Dr. Jim Leiker and Dr. Jay Antle have been conducting these tours since 2011.
